The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has been accused of backing Yaqub Dogara to succeed him for selfish interest.

A member of the House and supporter of Femi Gbajabiamila’s speakership bid, Aliyu Madaki, made the allegation in a media interaction on Tuesday. He said Mr. Tambuwal’s support for Mr. Dogara was suspicious.

“Dogara is supported by one person; that one single person is the only person. The way I see it, with due apologies, it is coming out to be a contest between Femi Gbajabiamila and somebody; and not between Femi Gbajabiamila and Dogara. Somebody powerful in the National Assembly who is fronting or who is desperately pushing for the candidature of Dogara, for reasons best known to him,” Mr. Madaki said.

The lawmaker said he was surprised at Mr. Tambuwal’s stance as Mr. Gbajabiamila supported Mr. Tambuwal to become Speaker in 2011.

“When Gbajabiamila was taking Tambuwal to Asiwaju and other leaders in the south to support his candidature, that time, Hon. Yakubu Dogara was going round everywhere to work against him. That’s a fact we all know. But today to our surprise, the tables are turning. We don’t know the reasons. I’m baffled,” he said.

“I don’t know if there is any other person who was speaker House of Reps and after finishing speaker, he became something. Most of them end up hanging around. But God in his infinite mercy made Aminu Waziri Tambuwal Governor of Sokoto State, but he is not thinking about the good he will do to the people of Sokoto State. No, he is intent on foisting…because that is the truth, people don’t like to say it.

“He is bent on making sure that he imposes on us somebody we don’t like as our Speaker. It will not work God willing. We will revolt against it, like we revolted against those who wanted to make Mulikat Speaker against our wish, that is how we will revolt against those who want to foist Dogara on us.”

When asked for the reason he suspected Mr. Tambuwal is supporting Mr. Dogara, who is the current chairman of the Reps Committee on House Services, Mr. Madaki said, “Selfish interest…let me put it that way..very selfish interest.”

“Well maybe that place should be looked into very well. Because with the desperation people are pushing this Dogara project down our throats, I’m amazed, I’m beginning to think maybe people should look very carefully into all the things that happened in these four years in the House Services Committee. I believe that place there is something some people are trying to cover. Because I can’t understand the desperation.”

When contacted, Imam Imam, the media aide to Mr. Tambuwal, told PREMIUM TIMES he would not “dignify Madaki’s allegations with a response” as the allegations “are not true.”
Also, another legislator from Kaduna State, Rufai Chachangi, who is a supporter of Mr. Gbajabiamila, said he did not believe Mr. Tambuwal was supporting Mr. Dogara.

Apart from Messrs. Gbajabiamila (Lagos) and Dogara (Bauchi), others believed to be eyeing the position of Speaker in the soon to be inaugurated 8th Assembly are Tahir Monguno, Borno State; Mojeed Alabi, Osun State; and Abdulmumin Jibrin, Kano State. They are all members of the All Progressives Congress which won a majority in both chambers of the National Assembly.
