Hopes dashed as Mama Taraba is defeated in Taraba

Aisha Al-Hasan

Expectations by Nigerians that history would be made at this year’s general election with the country getting its first female governor ever has been effectively dashed.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Taraba, Aisha Al-Hassan, who put up a strong showing in the well-fought race, has now reached the end of the road.

At the end of collation of votes for Saturday’s supplementary election in the state, Ms. Al-Hasan got 13,599 votes to trail the Peoples Democratic Party’s Darius Ishiaku, who garnered 53,120 votes.

When the votes earned by both candidates in both the April 11 and April 25 elections are added, Mr. Ishiaku’s cumulative ballots came to 360,318  to the APC’s candidate 275,985.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially declared the PDP candidate winner of the election.

The INEC returning  officer for the state, Muhammad  Kyari, declared Mr. Darius governor-elect, having scored the highest number of votes and winning a quarter of the votes in almost all the local government areas in the state.

The 2015 governorship in Taraba state enjoyed huge following across the country with several activists and young people backing the APC candidate to make history as the first female governor in the country’s history.

In fact, as results of the election from local government areas trickled into INEC office in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, on April 11, Ms. Al-Hasan, fondly known as Mama Taraba by supporters, at some point overtook her main challenger, Mr. Ishiaku.

This triggered nationwide celebration by people who thought Ms. Al-hasan was on her way to dislodging the PDP from the state in a historic win.

But as more votes arrived from remote local governments, it emerged that Ms. Al-Hasan was actually trailing her challenger.

At the end of INEC’s final collation that day, the election was declared inconclusive because the margin of Mr. Ishiaku’s  victory was lower than the number of registered voters in areas where elections either did not hold or were cancelled due to irregularities.

Yesterday’s supplementary election held in those areas, with Mr. Ishiaku getting the most votes.

Mama Taraba, you fought a good fight, we love you and one day you will still rule the state. You are intelligent, beautiful and have many qualities that will propel you to greater National positions in Nigeria. WE LOVE YOU ALL OVER NIGERIA AND BEYOND.

She remains a good example for women to follow. I congratulate her courage.

  • Alfullati

Our dear sister , do not be discouraged. We admire your determination to make history.God bless you and God bless Nigeria.

  • Khumalo!

She actually lost. She was defeated. But even if she wasn’t, I do not think the pro Islamist APC & useless INEC would have permitted her to win being that she is a woman as per their policy of Sharia & Boko haramish principles.
Be sure that unlike other states where APC got their smelling nostrils terribly bloodied, they would not go to court to challenge ‘Madam’ Taraba’s loss, except she were a man.

By the way, why can’t people close to OBJ or the afenifere take the old man to hospital? He is becoming a national liability with his highly infectious brand of mumudity. He should be chained to a chair and his lips padlocked.Instead, you leave him to roam about like the possessed looking for who to infect. @ his age, he shud be praying for forgiveness for all his crimes. Over 51 persons were politically assassinated between 1999 and 2009 during OBJ’s presidency BUT the Yoruba media never saw it as evil, still does not see it as evil. Why? OBJ is a Yoruba man. He would have been labelled evil if and only if he were from the South or East. That is Nigeria for you.

  • the truth

Ordinarily if this woman was not in the cult group apc,she would have called to accept defeat but since she is part and parcel of a cult group she would insist on violence and lies

    • Maria

Animal… the first person to start calling winner after defeat in Nigeria is an APC sitting governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi who lost to Ayodele Fayose.

      • the truth

You are a donkey. The same fayemi who later said he didn’t concede defeat. If he conceded why is ekiti in turmoil now? I know u don’t know how to say the truth but try from now on

        • Maria

Your mother is a goat. He gave a state broadcast conceding defeat and he vacated the governor’s house… so, what do you by he did not concede defeat? What has what is happening in Ekiti now has got to do with Fayemi? You are a useless person always twisting the truth.

          • Otile

Ask Ifa Orunmila to save you from your miserable self. You have become foul-mouthed in you old age. Odale

      • Mee

Are you referring to that vagabond corrupt crook parading himself as a ‘democrat’? are you referring to the unrepentant ex-Gov who was voted out because of his corrupt ways? I mean the heartless who reduced Ekiti state civil servant’s and teachers salary so he could save money to buy a N50m bed for he & his wife and refurbish the state house with billions of tax payers money? Is it that filthy ex-gov of APC party you refer to? In any case, he had no choice but to concede defeat asap because the Ekiti people would have stoned him to death in broad day light.

        • Maria

Ekiti people are not killers. And mind you, Fayose is the hoodlum, an agbero man….now fighting for his life…. his days are numbered. Dr Fayemi is a perfect gentleman with good quality education unlike the thug now in Ekiti you call PDP governor. Fayemi will return as the governor soon and Fayose sent to jail…mark my words.

    • True Nigerian

You know, when I met you on this forum for the first time (and I mean the first few weeks and months), you repeatedly assured and reassured everyone that you were neutral. As it turned out, the neutrality was all a lie.

      • the truth

now tell me one apc candidate that has lost and accepted defeat. Show me 1. They never play fair, always call for blood and violence once they lose

That woman,Haja Aisha Al-Hassan, represents symbol of democracy and being a democrat she should keep her hope high and never give up her attempt and try again to vie for any similar elective position either in senate or representatives elective positions. And APC incoming Federal cabinet too should note her and appoint Haja Aisha Al-Hassan to any befitting political position in order to encourage female political activity.

    • Tunsj

You laid it out well. I hope her defeat does not discourage Nigerian women from seeking higher offices.

  • Interrogator

BEFORE WE GET CARRIED AWAY BY MAMA TARABA’S DEFEAT TODAY,
THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM IS PRESIDENT JONATHAN WHO IS SET TO
    BECOME THE MOST CORRUPT PRESIDENT NIGERIA HAS EVER HAD;
AS HE STRIVES TO EMPLACE AN ILLEGAL GOVERNMENT UNDER BUHARI –
WHO IS BARRED BY THE 1999 CONSTITUTION FROM TAKING OVER THE
GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA. FOR THERE IS NO WORSE CORRUPTION THAN
FOR PRESIDENT JONATHAN TO DIS-OBEY THE CONSTITUTION OF HIS COUNTRY
FOR HIS PERSONAL INTEREST SO AS TO SECURE HIMSELF AND SECURE GAINS
FOR HIS OWN FAMILY. WE THE PEOPLE SAY NO AND WE DEMAND AS FOLLOWS:

    • goodygoody

Jonathan: It is a felony of treason if you violate the following law:

      • The Federal Republic of Nigeria shall not be governed, nor shall any person or group
of persons take control of the Government of Nigeria or any part thereof, except in
accordance with the provisions of this Constitution…and a person shall not be qualified
for election to the office of President if he has presented a forged certificate to the
      Independent National Electoral Commission.

      …………….Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution

      • adedamola pearce (Lagos)

        @goodygoody:

It is a tragedy that Nigerians are now limbering up to confront President Jonathan
just for him to execute the 1999 Constitution. No good president should need any
reminder to faithfully execute the laws and the Constitution of his country. That is
what he swore on oath to do upon taking office in the year 2011 by putting his hand
on the Holy Bible in solemn pledge before God and Man.

I agree with you that only corruption can explain Jonathan evading the pledge of his oath.
Jonathan does not even know the meaning of FREE AND FAIR ELECTION. He just says it.
An election that results in intentional violation of the national Constitution is exact opposite
of ‘free and fair’ election. It is a criminal conspiracy, not an election.

By comparison, Olusegun Obasanjo’s corruption between 1999 and 2007 was for forging votes.
But this is worse. What Jonathan is doing by contrast is to usurp the power of the federal republic
to himself, to then virtually declare the 1999 Constitution null and void and throw Nigeria to the dogs!

      • lord vuga

You have a defective constitution which following it has not gotten us any where. By the way why is it that it is now that folks have suddenly woken up to what the constitution says. All the while its provisions have been ignored and disobeyed by this govt , legislature and judiciary folks like you kept mute.
certificate or no certificate we need change.all the while where has certificates and degrees gotten us? He may as well be an illiterate cattle herder,as far as he has the guts and wisdom to rule so be it.

Ha, if this law is there inside the Constitution, that is the end of Buhari presidency!!
What a pity. Buhari caused it by himself. Nobody pushed him to do this lie of perjury.

  • Comfortkay

I still hope one day to see a woman elected governor in Nigeria.
If all women in her state has been more educated and not confused but give her their vote she could have won the election.

  • Repeat Again

    Editor Premium Times,

Please allow me to make a public appeal to Buhari. He is an ex head of state.
Buhari should respect himself. There’s no single respect in getting messed up
in this 1961 WASC fraud. He is a grandfather. He is supposed to have shame.
I can’t imagine my grandfather involved in WASC fraud. Buhari is 72 years’ old.
It’s better for him to have a good name than a top office position with no dignity.

Hajiya Aisha Abu Ali Al-Hassan should understand that Islamic APC party has no use for a woman governor. They only need women for votes and to sleep with.
