Suicide bomber hits Maiduguri market, many feared dead

An explosion has gone off at the popular Maiduguri poultry market, with several people feared dead, residents, journalists and security operatives have told PREMIUM TIMES.

Our correspondent says the incident, happening less than six weeks after the same market was attacked by suicide bombers, occurred at 12:20 P.M. Nigerian time.

Details of the incident is sketchy and the casualty rate is unclear. But the explosion has sparked panic across the Borno state capital, with some residents scampering home for safety.

The spokesperson of the Borno Police, Gideon Jibrin, confirmed the explosion.

He however said police detectives were heading to the scene to ascertain the extent of damage.

A security source, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, however said the the explosive was ferried into the market by a female suicide bomber believed not to be older than 10.

“Her body was completely shattered,” he said. “Because of the high calibre explosive she strapped to her body, the upper part of her body was flung apart and found about 500 metres away.”

The source said the explosion occurred shortly after another suspected bomber was apprehended in the area.

Suicide bombers, believed to be members of the extremist Boko Haram sect, had attacked the same market last December 1.

The police said six people, including two female suicide bombers, died in that attack.

Nigeria is closer to a civil war than to a general election.

      ………………Says Primate Olabayo

“It is my prophecy that 2015 is a year of blood. I see blood flowing ceaselessly in the land.
What i am seeing is not a military incursion into the body polity but the poor will take on
the rich. It is a revolution i am seeing in no distant future in Nigeria. A man of destiny
will take over the reins of governance and most corrupt people who’ve been parading
themselves and masquerading as Nigerian leaders, if they are not dead, will be jailed.

Between now and January, the country (Nigeria) will witness the worst era of bloodshed
in its history. And if at all there will be elections in Nigeria, the seat of president is not vacant,
that means if at all there is going to be a presidential election, it will be inconclusive just like
(the June 12) that we had during the time of MKO Abiola.

God told me that they are going to rig the election and this will cause an upheaval.
The results of the 2015 election will not be declared. And if the result is declared,
the winners of the election will not govern. Whether they call themselves APC or codeine,
they are all the same. I have told you, there may not be election next year”.

Why are you relying & believing this fake prophet of doom, to the extent of quoting him .
He predicted Papa Bush would win against President Clinton in 1990, Clinton won and went for 8years. He was always predicting the death of. Obas and eminent Nigerians , but they live beyond his prophesy .
Please ask him , why he did not see ;that he was going to be afflicted with stroke that almost took his live away some years ago . Nigeria should rely on God but not fake prophesy & prophets .2015 , Nigeria will be intact . God using choosing men, will put an end to this madness of bloodletting .

Yet Mr president insist on 2nd term? When people are dying under his watch

  • Otile

Since this people have their own law – sharia, police – hisba, army – boko haram, why not let them go their way? There is no need pretending that we all belong to one country under one law.

We must resist the Yorubas forcing us to live with these foreigners. We understand crude oil s the issue, but we must not perish because other people want our oil.

  • Alcindo Satori

Where is the news in this? It is Muslims just being Muslims — torturing, killing, using women and young girls for their own purposes with no consideration for what they want. Happens every day in millions of places in Muslim controlled countries, and some Nigerians, Yoruba people in particular, are even considering voting buhari (a known islamist) into power. Thank God for the SS/SE, and other states that on GEJ’s side.

Most Nigerians assumed automatically that the order to re arrest Chinakwe came directly from our unforgiving oga at the top. Most will doubt that he would have been amused

  • bongus

Inibehe, while appreciating your efforts in this case, i want to believe that the police authorities must have looked at the bigger picture as regards national security in handling this case. You will agree with me that, what stokes ethno-religious crises in this country are issues of this nature. Secondly, the police was not acting a busy body in this case because someone made an official complain and we should not expect the president to influence the course of the case in favour of Chinakwe. Otherwise, he will be denying the complainant his own right to be served justice. This will be a dangerous precedent. Moreover, the president has daunting challenges to attend to and shouldn’t be drawn into unnecessary distractions such as this. The police should be allowed to do their job. Thank you.

People like you are a complete disgrace to mankind. Where was the police when heardsmen stormed Nimbo in Enugu? Agatu in Benue? Where were they when muslim fanatics killed the redeemed pastor in Abuja? The igbo trader in Kano? The eighth innocent Nigerians Zamfara state burnt to death two days ago? People like you make me regret being a Nigerian. How can the man be arrested and yet those threatening him with death are left off the hook??

      • BroVic

        +1 for your last sentence…

First it was DSS storming into state government houses and people applauded them, next it was EFCC breaking all known laws and detaining people indefinitely and people applauded them too.The Army joined too by murdering 347 Shites members and people were hailing them and calling the victims all sort of names. I will leave you writings from Rev Martin Niemoller from the Nazi reign who wrote his world famous rebuke against the cowardice of German intellectuals during the rise of the Nazi party: “First they came for the Socialist, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me”
