Inauguration of Jonathan’s campaign team postponed over sister’s death

Former President Goodluck Jonathan

The inauguration of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Campaign Organisation, earlier slated for Monday in Abuja, has been postponed till Tuesday, a senior aide to the president said.

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Rufai Alkali, announced the postponement at Legacy House, the PDP Presidential Campaign office and venue of the inauguration.

Mr. Alkali said the inauguration was postponed following the death of the president’s younger sister, Nancy Jonathan-Olei, on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the organisation and guests were already seated at the venue awaiting the president’s arrival before the announcement.

“As you are all aware, His Excellency lost his sister, Nancy Jonathan-Olei, yesterday morning. In view of this, the president has decided to suspend this inauguration for today until tomorrow at 11 a.m,” Mr. Alkali said.

“Mr President has asked me to convey his apologies for the inconveniences this postponement has caused and to tell you it was due to circumstances beyond our control.”

NAN reports that a minute silence was observed in honour of the deceased.
