Akinwunmi Ambode wins Lagos APC governorship primaries

Akinwunmi Ambode at his declaration ceremony on October 24, 2014

Akinwunmi Ambode, the man widely believed to have been anointed by Bola Tinubu, a former Lagos governor and a national leader of the All Progressives Congress [APC], has defeated his 12 challengers for the APC governorship ticket in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, by a landslide.

About 5,700 delegates from 20 local government areas cast their votes for the 13 candidates who sought the ticket of the party.

Mr. Akinwunmi polled 3,735 votes to emerge the party’s flag bearer at next year’s general election.

Obafemi Hamzat took the second position with 1,201 votes.

Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, came a distant third with 182 votes.

During vote counting, the moment Mr. Ambode’s tally overtook that of Mr. Hamzat, the people in the VIP section of Onikan Stadium, jumped and cheered in jubilation. Mr. Ambode, who had been seated  through the night, sat quietly and savoured the moment.

13 aspirants participated in the party’s governorship ticket, but by the time the final result was announced, Mr. Ambode, the eventual winner, was the only one left at the venue.

The other 12 candidates had left by Thursday evening.

Other aspirants scored as follows: Lanre Ope [0 vote ], Tokunbo Wahab [7 votes], Adekunle Disu [9 votes], Abayomi Sutton [0 vote], Tokunbo Agbesanwa [0 vote], Adeyemi Ikuforiji [182 votes], Tola Kasali [68 votes], Supo Shasore [121 votes], Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon (GOS) [272 votes], Lekan Pitan [112 votes], Obafemi Hamzat [1,201].

The exercise was largely peaceful but with Mr. Tinubu discreetly anointing a candidate, it was a one-sided race all along, with Mr. Ambode largely projected to win. He did not prove bookmakers wrong.

Mr. Ambode, 51, is a former Accountant-General for Lagos.

Not known to be a politician before now, Mr. Ambode frequently flaunts his public service credentials.

At his official declaration to run on October 24, Mr. Ambode said he played an important role in raising Lagos State’s monthly internally generated revenue from N600 million to N12 billion.

“I am resolved to offer you genuine leadership that will be accountable with all the principles of good governance, a government of inclusion that will not leave any race or gender behind. No matter your age, sex, tribe or any other status, as long as you reside in Lagos, we will make Lagos liveable for you,” he said at the time.

“We will work to create opportunities for all and offer selfless service. As we proceed we will leave no one behind. What our great party stands for is change, positive change. We will create wealth. We will create new jobs. We will challenge ourselves to make Lagos a better place. We will take Lagos to the next level. We are going to do it together.”

Mr. Ambode promised to run an inclusive government that would cater for the aged, widows, artisans, students, children, the physically challenged, professionals.

“For corporate Lagos, Lagos is open for business, even for greater business. We have the political will to move Lagos to the next level. We are going to face our challenges by ourselves. Nobody is going to do that for us. With our collective will, we will overcome them.

“I call on all Muslims, Christians, and people of other religious persuasions to come out en masse and ensure we vote in a candidate that has the interest of Lagos and Lagosians at heart. A candidate that is passionate about Lagos. A candidate that truly understands the needs of the ordinary people. I am that candidate.”

‘A generational bridge’

Those opposed to Mr. Ambode’s candidacy have questioned his roots, insisting he is not a Lagos indigene.

At his declaration ceremony in October, he arrived the stadium in a black, tinted jeep with Epe boldly inscribed on the plate number.

In his speech, he described Lagos as the most cosmopolitan state in Nigeria with no room for discrimination.

“Whether you are Igbo, Efik, Ijaw, Hausa, Fulani, a foreigner, whoever you are, so far you live or work in Lagos, our government will work for you and you will be adequately represented.

“We want a Lagos that will protect Abdullahi; that will address the issues of Chukwuma and uphold the well-being of Yewande. We want a Lagos that will not deny any Nigerian citizen the right of political participation and access to services. It is not about sectionalism. This is the new Nigeria that we want to build and Lagos is the focal point from where we would build the Nigeria of our dreams.”

An acrimonious process

The processes leading to Thursday’s primaries was substantially acrimonious for the party, with some top Lagos politicians and the other candidates accusing Mr. Tinubu of manipulating the process to favour Mr. Ambode.

Mr. Tinubu had to meet with the candidates to disown Mr. Ambode, saying he had not anointed anyone and that he would allow a level-playing field for all contenders.

But not many believed him, with some openly saying he was merely playing politics.

By Wednesday, the eve of the primary, there was palpable tension in the APC camp in Lagos, with some candidates calling for a suspension of the process.

After a meeting at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, some aspirants insisted the procedure used in selecting delegates to Thursday’s primaries was defective.

“Congresses held in April were based on 57 local councils, but the party’s Constitution recognizes 20 local governments. Now they are trying to merge the 57 into 20,” a source who was present at the meeting told PREMIUM TIMES.

“Also, under INEC’s delineation of wards, we have 245 in the state. But under the party’s arrangement, it is 327. What happens to the excess number?

“So it cannot fly. It breached both the Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution.”

Peter Obadan, a former Deputy Governor of Edo State (under John Oyegun, the APC Chairman), chaired the meeting.

The aspirants, PREMIUM TIMES learnt, were also angered by the fact that none of them – except Mr. Ambode – knew the delegates to Thursday’s primaries.

“We (aspirants) don’t even have the delegates’ list. If they bulldoze their way to the primaries tomorrow, any one of us can void,” the source said.

Any trouble ahead?

It is unclear whether all the other aspirants and party chieftains in the state would accept Mr. Ambode’s emergence as candidate.

But on Monday, some party members, led by one Olorunfemi Oluwatoin, filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Lagos seeking a cancellation of the primaries.

Joined as respondents were the aspirants, the party, and the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC].

There were also indication Thursday that some candidates were dissatisfied with the process.

By midway into voting, almost all the aspirants had left the venue of the exercise. Only Akinwunmi Ambode, Ganiyu Solomon, and Leke Pitan were the only ones at the Onikan Stadium venue of the primary as at 6 p.m.

As at 8.30 p.m., when delegates from 17 local governments had voted, only Messrs Ambode and  Solomon were still present at the venue.

It is unclear why the aspirants left and whether they would concede defeat to Mr. Ambode.

Earlier, Peter Obadan, the chairman the Election Committee, had appealed to the aspirants to monitor the exercise and channel any grievance to his committee.

There are fears that disgruntled party members could defect to other parties to achieve their ambitions.

But Henry Ajomale dismissed such fears, adding that he doesn’t expect any “crisis” after the primaries.

“In 2007, 23 members of our party, including our commissioners, contested in the primaries. There was no crisis then,” Mr. Ajomale told journalists on Thursday.

Tinubu appeals to aspirants to accept result

But Mr. Tinubu has appealed to all the aspirants to accept the winner of the contest as the party’s choice.

In a goodwill message to the aspirants, delegates, and party members on Thursday, Mr. Tinubu, hailed all the aspirants for being good democrats.

“I want to use this opportunity to commend all the aspirants. You have toiled hard and sweated for the good of the state,” Mr. Tinubu said in the message read by the party’s Publicity Secretary in the state, Joe Igbokwe. “You all have acquitted yourselves very well by selling your vision and not by tearing each other down. This is as it should be and must be.”

“When I met with all of you, you spoke of the need to ensure a free and democratic process. Today, you have that process,” Mr. Tinubu said. “However, we must be realistic. There are 12 (they were actually 13) good men seeking one post, only one of you will win this position.

“Accept the winner as the choice of the party that we may move forward and continue the project we highly seek. “You are 12 aspirants, and like the 12 tribes of Israel, let us work together.”

It remains to be seen whether the other aspirants will heed this call.

I don’t know why politicians in Nigeria don’t accept defeat?

    • ernesto

      Defeat on manipulated system…

      • Ade

I know Agbaje more than you know him and I am sure he will not be able to beat Koro in the PDP, He is depending on his two God fathers, Ogunlewe and Bode George to pull the strings for him

        • PREACHER

But I think Agbaje will beat Koro

  • ernesto

Agbaje taken over Lagos is now a cleared cut….

    • taiwo

Agbaje I admire. However, my vote will not go to him. At the end of the day, he will be surrounded mostly by hyenas. Lagosians beware o!

      • Ade

The lion of bourdilion is greater than the hyenas combined! Anyway the masses are the looser.

  • taiwo

Interesting. I would have preferred Sasore or Hamzat. However, the guy who worked hardest won the contest. Hamzat also worked hard (but not as hard as Ambode) & came second. Sasore’s aspiration, at best appeared tentative, an afterthought. I hope & pray Ambode succeed even more than BRF in governing Lagos, hopefully when he wins the contest against PDP. I call on all those who lost out to close rank, rally round the broom & secure Lagos from any hounds around. Lagos is too important to ALL Nigerians to be handed to any carpetbaggers.

    • PREACHER

Wow,this is the most balanced and objective comment I have seen in months from a fan of one of the aspirants, well kudos to you my brother for your honesty and magnanimity.I agree with everything you wrote above except the part of expecting any other person except Ambode to win.I have closely followed them and the way this Ambode worked and the way they ganged up against him,I really pitied him

      • taiwo

At the end of the day, what matters to all of us is the fairness of the process and result of that process, which is further development of Lagos. Have a good day & merci (thanks).

    • Omo Oodua

May your own life and the rest of your family be run the way Tinubu is running Lagos State and APC as a whole! Are you saying Amen or not??

      • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

        Amen, on my own behalf.

I hope you would also say Amen to my own prayers for you.

May your, and that of the rest of your family, be run the way Jonothing is running Nigeria and PDP as a whole!

I await your loud amen, Omo Oodua.

      • PREACHER

Una no dey taya for this nonsense ???
Everytime you guys blurt out gibberish you ask people to say amen to your nonsense,

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

      Many thanks, Taiwo.

Like you, Ambode was not my preferred candidate because he reportedly had the backing of Jagaban. But then, I had no preference at all among them. Without doubt, he worked harder than the rest of them and did not take his backing for granted. For that alone, he deserved to win it.

Having said these, I wish him well and hope he and APC would carry the state at the the general elections.

Mr. Ambode, I have one request for your governorship, and that is the emergence of both Easterners and Northerners in your cabinet. That would be when I fully accept your words about inclusion.

Lagos (and the Yoruba) must set the tone and direction for politics in Nigeria.

In the meantime, my heartfelt congratulations to APC for breaking the frontiers of Nigerian politics once more with the emergence of Senator al-Hassan as the Gubernatorial candidate for Taraba State. That is a first.

      • taiwo

Thank you quintessential KaySoyemi. For starters, Ben Akabueze been Commissioner for Budget & Planning in Lagos State for about 9 years now. Joe Igbokwe heads a Lagos State Govt Agency. Young Arabemen, a former police commissioner in Lagos & elsewhere heads Lastma. Captain Danjuma Maigeri Abdulahi, though born in Ijora, Lagos heads KAI (Kick Against Indiscipline). Lagos has always been a pacesetter and I am sure It will get more inclusive over time. As a Lagos indigene from both Ita-Faji & Badagry, I do not have a problem with inclusion. Whats matters above all to me is fairness & good governance. Also, as you rightly said, we now have a first with the election of Senator aisha Al-Hassan as the first female candidate in this 4th republic. This definitely is laudable & a big plus for APC.

        • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

Egbon Taiwo, I appreciate the illumination.

I was only previously aware of Messrs. Akabueze and Igbokwe.

Things can only get better indeed.

          • taiwo

True. And It shall. Especialloy if the Presidency comes good for GMB in February.

          • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

            Fingers x’d for the 10th.

        • PREACHER

Well done,I was with Prof Akabueze last Sunday.Lagos truly is cosmopolitanly home to all

  • favourtalk

It’s a matter of hardwork and it has shown to the whole world that it pays to work very well. It would have been another thing if someone that just came out a week before the election wins but ambode has been on the campaign wheel since early of the year. Wish him the best as he becomes the next governor of lagos state

  • PREACHER

This is a fitting reward and result of hardwork, didligence and respect for delegates in consulting widely with them across the LGAs and LCDAs while the other aspirants were busy either spreading lies about him or meeting in Maryland and other places at night to plan how to dent his reputation and stop him

    • Omo Oodua

May your life and the rest of your family be run the way Tinubu is running Lagos State and APC as a whole! Are you saying Amen or not??

      • taiwo

I can see you are overwhelmed by emotion. Lagos has been delivering for more than 15 years & God willing will continue into the future with APC. I have benefited indirectly from good governance in Lagos.

        • Omo Oodua

Of cos you have benefited, why wont you? When your father is the head of Agbero @ Oshodi and your brother at the office of Lastma collecting blood money as egunje.

          • taiwo

Appears you are losing your marbles! Sofly, sofly o. No man worth his salt should induce a heart attack. Breath in and out a few times. That should help.

      • jungle

Ambode is different from Tinubu. stop the abuse. I know u don’t like him, but what is the abuse for?

      • smith

And you omo oodua? May everything horrible that President Jonathan has brought to Nigeria and on Nigerians be the lot of your family-say Amen omo oodua.

  • Robbie

    Dear Sir,

    RAJI FASHOLA MAY BE IMPEACHED

I heard that APC state executives are planning to impeach Raji Fashola because Raji Fashola opposes Ambode
The thinking in APC is that Fashola will work against APC at the 2015 election and it’s better to remove him now.
This impeachment plot has a high chance of success. About 90% of the Lagos Assembly legislators are known
to be in Ashiwaju Bola Tinubu’s camp. They will vote for an impeachment of Raji Fashola if asked to do so anytime.

    • Savage

Don’t worry yourself, you hear? Once Ambode says he can’t rely on Fashola on 2015 election,
the House of Assembly will just go ahead and move a motion of impeachment against Fashola.
Just about two grounds of reckless spending will be enough to pass this impeachment motion.
As at today, Mr. Ambode is the one that can sack Raji Fashola, without a hindrance whatsoever.

  • Maria

    Congratulations, bros.

    • Otile

Maria, don’t congratulate him. Ambode brought in a very large dirty broom. When the primaries started he shook it in the face of his opponents, they ran away and he inherited their votes.

      The process was not fair.

      • Maria

I thought you are PDP man? Were you there? The opponents were afraid of defeat… the same reason Mr Jonathan disallowed primaries in PDP for the first time in the history of that party.

        • Otile

I don’t belong to any party. All I want is the best candidate who can lead the continent to peace and prosperity. Valuable resources are terrible assets to waste.

President Jona is doing his best. He is burdened with distractions from APC, Boko Haram, and long standing corrupt practices. Pray for him, will you?

          • endingNaija

Otile , sorry o why are you denying your identity? But you are Reno Omokri. And Reno Omokri is the Facebook adviser to president Jonathan of PDP. So you belong to PDP otile na Reno Omokri.

  • Oluwadara

I have every hope that Akinwunmi will provide good leadership, because he is a technocrat like fashola him self, he is not the type of noise making politicians who ventures in politics to make a living and profit.

    • Omo’oodua

Everybody in Yorubaland is looking for a way to liberate themselves once again from (APC)
      – the pretenders who claim to be progressives but are the opposite of anything progressive.
They say they are ‘progressives’ but they admit all the corrupt people from the PDP
and bring them together to form the All Progressives Congress [APC].

What is progressive about ex-Governor Nyako of Adamawa state, for example?
Now that the Yoruba people have known that the APC is worse than PDP in corruption,
impunity, and, lack of internal democracy, we have to vote against APC.

HOW RAJI FASOLA LOST FRIENDS AND ALIENATED PEOPLE

Alhaji Babatunde Raji Fashola was all along fated to come to a bad end.
Here was a parvenu emergency politician without a day’s experience.
Bola Tinubu had just picked him up from a dump site and imposed him on
the ACN party in 2007. Servile party members acquiesced, and, by odd fate,
Raji Fashola was ensconced as governor of Lagos state; partly also because
the other choices (Musliu Obanikoro and Femi Pedro) were thought repulsive.
Lagos voters, not knowing Raji Fashola from Adam still voted for him in protest
of those better known but repulsive alternatives on offer.

In office, Raji Fashola showed the mentality of a bandit. He went so far as to
publicly declare that Lagosians are not at all entitled to Freedom of Information
that all other Nigerians in the remaining 35 states of the country are entitled under
a federal law. With such a mindset, Raji Fashola lost friends and alienated people.
He’s now primed to be brought into the justice system next year for squandering
and perhaps pocketing portions of 18 billion dollars which Lagos state
received as revenues from May 29, 2007.

What else did Raji Fashola do with his sudden and un-expected opportunity in life?
Nothing sensible. He just went for the treasury. Like a drunken mariner, he took, and,
spent Lagos state into almost a trillion Naira debt today. He was crude and un-couth,
making enemies for himself at every step of the way, even superciliously refusing to reply
letters. He hates merits but he is beloved of Islamic invidiousness. He quickly staffed
the Lagos secretariat and the 57 local governments with nigh-illiterate Muslims.
He then started acting God and dividing Lagos state into warring religious camps.

  • Concerned Citizen

We need someone that will consolidate the achievements of their predecessor. Like Fashola did with Tinubu. But not like Fayose is doing in Ekiti, trying to scrap and undo everything. If you know what is good for you vote APC. If PDP takes lagos they will set us back decades. Lagos is the only place with some semblance of democracy in the country where rule of law still exist.

    • Denrele

      @Concerned Citizen:

By winning 65.5% of the votes Ambode would be confident of APC Lagos party support.
It’s however unclear how APC party support would help him against Jimi Agbaje of PDP.
The Lagos election next year is afterall not about party; certainly not. The issue is higher.
Lagosians outside APC membership are opposed to the Islamism injected by Bola Tinubu.
They want to chock Islamism from creeping further into public administration in Lagos state.

      • taiwo

How so naive! Individuals without parties. That’s what many who voted Jonathan said then and see the foul smell we r getting for the fresh air. (S)he who has ears let her or him hear.

      • Major

What is this guy talking about? Islamism? What is that again? you people are forgetting that Tinubu’s wife is a Christian, Fashola’s wife is also a Christian… if they couldn’t Islamize there wives who else would they Islamize? grow up please!

        • concernedcitizen2014

No mind him hatred hidden in religion. If Koro is selected instead of Jimi Abaje Denrele will forget that Koro is a muslim and vote for him

      • Concerned Citizen

Obanikoro is likely to represent pdp. And he is muslim. Are u now going to say lagosians will vote koro bcs they dont like tinubu? I think i disgree with u. it is not religion that will feed lagosians? And i think people in lagos know that by now. Infact if islam is d issue Ambode is a christain. Fashola that is a muslim performed well and even though he was picked by tinubu he was his own man not a puppet. Religion should have nothing to do with it if not that pdp has dragged it into yoruba politics. What lagosians want is someone that will perform, simple. Christain or Muslim all lagosians know the carnage and impunity that will come to lagos if pdp rules just like ekiti. No matter what u think apc is guilty of know that pdp has proved to be far worse.

        • Daddy Alakija

I cannot vote for Mr. Ambode because i don’t know anything about him.
All i know about him is that Bola Tinubu brought him to be APC candidate.
Ambode may be pretending he is a Christian since Bola Tinubu tells lies too.
I don’t want Islamic state around me or even near me in Jesus name. Amen!

Are you for real? this is a bit shallow though.

Jimi who???Is that the name of the latest movie on Telemundo?

Jimi Agbaje is not even sure of defeating Obanikoro in their primaries,so let him go scale that hurdle first before you ever mention his name again whenever we’re talking of people like Akinwunmi Ambode

      • T

U are certainly not a Lagosian, we are not fanatics. What favour has the 8yr under fashola served to muslims and how does it affect christians. Pls take your bigotry to Enugu or Anambra

        • correction

What has Anambra or Enugu got to do with your bigotry? Those states you mentioned are not divided along religious lines or play politics of religion as manifest in osun and Lagos. Those states are far too sophisticated to engage in such issues. Their people are hardworking and busy people with no time to engage in such mundane issues.

  • Son of Jagaban

    Editor Premium Times,

I write to praise Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his choke-hold on Lagos ACN/APC since 2002.
No politician in Lagos state ever had such dominance over his party for 12 years running.
Though it is also true that Lagos state has never had 12 years of un-interrupted civil rule.
It does not lie in my own mouth to judge the APC party members as either slaves or knaves.
All i am saying is the fact that one man has dominated the APC party for 12 years running.

    • Jayjay

“Bola Tinubu has become the most hated politician in the South-West.
Association with him is increasingly as politically contagious as leprosy.
Coming on the heels of its defeat in Ondo, the APC rout in Ekiti is conclusive
proof that Bola Tinubu’s fabled stranglehold on South-West politics has ended.”

“Lagosians are disgusted that Bola Tinubu has privatized their politics. His wife,
daughter and even son-in-law have been steam-rolled into vantage political positions.
The Lagos state finances are tied to Alpha Beta (Ltd.)”

stay there, the PDP at the federal level is s huge joke, any association with the PDP now is like leprosy thats the real analogy we have presently. Anyone no matter who they present cannot defeat the APC in Lagos right now.

        • Sangbafo

G4, why are you wasting your time with characters like jayjay. Was jayjay at OAU Ile Ife recently when PDP and President Jonathan used OILy money to import and bribe Yoruba” “elders”? What did the Yoruba masses at the grassroots do to President Jonathan and his Chopper(helicopter) even as he was smuggled in and out of the university campus? Make jayjay sit down there dey talk garbage. Why will the Yorubas beg for something less from PDP when together with others, they built APC and they can get something bigger in APC? Except one is blind. But we Yorubas are not blind. Make jayjay siddon dey look and talk garbage.

          • Dele Sho

But is Nigeria now an Islamic state? Why are there so many Jihadists writing here?

Please can you ask for the party cards of your commentators before you allow them to write?
I have observed something. Most of these contributors are fanatical card-carrying APC members.
They are not even hiding it again. Look at the other one (above) saying he is the Son of Jagaban.
Why should you allow the Son of Jagaban to even enter your website in the first place, why?

Akinwunmi Ambode won the primaries, because of his mass appeal, connection with the people, hard work, focus, diligence,a good action plan that he stuck to etc.His agenda resonated with the people BIGTIME.
Like a committed farmer, once he had his hand on the plough,he never looked sideways, not to talk of looking back, even in the face of the campaigns of calumny, lies and outright threat by his rivals,he still kept his cool and stayed focus. He alone deserves to score even 5000 votes.I wonder how Hamzat even managed to get up to a thousand votes,he did not do any work at all, other than join the gang of 11 in plotting at night, how to stop Akinwunmi Ambode, how on earth did he score up to 1000 votes,I suspect foul play,he ought to score far less.

The emperor has spoken every one catch cold. The zombie governor and the jagaban’s chief of staff OBA of Lagos concurs. Where is Banire and Hamzat now? Lagos and APC are personal property and the lord gives out as he pleases. You are all beggars and you have no option. Fashola after 8 years. Remain a novice and a political liability. Fahola’s cluelessness was badly exposed. He will go into political oblivion ditto Rotimi Amaechi. Ask Ribadu.

    WHY NIGERIAN JOURNALISTS MUST APOLOGIZE

Nigerian journalists writing in the newspapers owe us a collective apology.
Unless they are a churlish bunch of biddable merchants they should give it.
Newspaper journalists misled all Nigerians on the Lagos APC primary contest.
They said it would be a neck-and-neck race between Ambode and Shasore.

We were even told that Raji Fashola’s candidate (Supo Shasore) might win it.

We all believed the newspaper journalists; and, we waited with baited breath.
But see what happened? The APC primary was a one-horse race, more or less.
Ambode coasted ahead winning 65.5% of the total votes cast for all 12 aspirants.
And, Supo Shasore got just two per cent (2%) of those total votes in a no-contest.
We now demand a profuse apology because 2% is not a neck-and-neck race at all.

Oh what folly! I have always seen through Raji Fashola. I have watched his decisions and utterances,
and I have come to realize that this Raji Fashola does not have the two round inhabitants of a scrotum.

I begin to wonder who Fashola married. Where is the intuitive advice of his wife?

If he was married to a Patience Jonathan, he would have since extricated the festering fingers of
Tinubu from the power structures of the state.

Fashola, riding on his popularity and goodwill, would have been the one to choose his successor,
become vice presidential candidate, or at worst, senator. Now watch Fashola slide into the abyss

        of political infecundity.

          @ Brown,

You opened the hornets’ nest on this matter. You don’t know how angry Lagosians are?
Don’t forget this primary election was for APC registered members only, not all Lagosians.
So the result reflected the power-structure INSIDE APC, not in Lagos state as a whole.

Lagosians did not wait with bated breath, like you did, but hoped Raji Fashola could upstage.
The truth is that Lagosians are ashamed to be colonized by Bola Tinubu and want freedom.
They’d hoped Raji Fashola could lead a crypto liberation movement from within APC party.
But as Ena Ofugara said (above) “Fashola does not have the two inhabitants of a scrotum”.

          • Omo’oodua

“The APC recently paid the price of impunity in Ekiti. And come 2015, Lagosians must ensure
they vote out this anti-people party called APC. Lagos citizens must remember that this party,
APC, used and dumped commercial motorcycle operators popularly known as okada rider after harnessing their support and services in the elections of 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011”.

“During campaigns for those polls, APC politicians even donated to okada riders, branded helmets, motorcycles and reflective jackets. But no sooner did the Action Congress of Nigeria (now part of the APC) come into power than they turned around to bite the finger that fed them, by banning okada all over Lagos State.”

The Lagos state finances are tied to Alpha Beta (Ltd.)”

Lagos state government is a prime suspect in financial frauds. All over the state
there’s more than anecdotal evidence of probable thefts by the state government
officials – in particular, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Raji Fashola – both of whom
never presented audited public accounts to the residents of Lagos state in the
            past 14 years since 1999.

Just few months ago, Raji Fashola – the incumbent governor – restated his previous
signed statement that Lagosians have no right to Freedom of Information. He’d
earlier declared through his attorney-general that as far as he’s concerned,
Nigeria’s Freedom of Information Act does not apply to benefit Lagos residents.
Never before has a Governor uttered such outrage to the public with arrogance.

Will Raji Fashola defect from APC?

I notice that Raji Fashola has not congratulated Ambode for winning the APC Lagos primary.
That tells me there’s a plan by Raji Fashola to leave the APC than be humiliated till the end.
Given also that Ambode hasn’t gone to Fashola on a courtesy visit since winning the ticket.
But defecting is easier to say than actually doing it credibly and with positive result to show.

Unless he (Fashola) resigns as governor or quits APC, he will have to campaign for Ambode –
whom he’s said to viscerally dislike, and that will be rubbing salt into injury for Fashola.

But resigning is not an option for Raji Fashola who’s been scamming the Lagos state treasury,
by paying 2.3 billion Naira per kilometre on expanding an existing Lekki expressway, at 300% higher
than the global price per kilometre approved by the World Bank.

Raji Fashola, by not thinking ahead, is in the dumps as at today, without any chance of picking
any other party’s ticket. All political parties shall be concluding their primaries next week. So,
Raji Fashola is stranded, along with his followers – none of whom has congratulated Ambode.

“The January 2014 global study of cities in the world done by the British Economist Intelligence Unit
has ranked Lagos, Nigeria, as the 3rd worst liveable city in the world. Lagos has degraded further
from its awful status in 2012 as the 4th worst city. On a scale of 100 Lagos now has the third poorest
score of 39.0 of all cities in the world assessed.”

the threat of conflict, the quality of medical care, the levels of censorship, the city temperature,
the quality of its schools and its transport links.”

      @ Fari,

You may be right O! For i remember Muiz Banire hinted Premium Times last week.
Muiz Banire said within 24 hours after the APC primary there’ll be sea-change in APC.
The ten (10) dissenting aspirants called a Press Conference, twice, in those 24 hours.
But they were too befuddled to agree a common position and Femi Hamzat re-defected.
Lanre Ope followed and re-defected to Ashiwaju Tinubu. There are just 8 holdovers left.

      • Alausa Civil Servant

No, not exactly. Femi Hamzat did not ‘redefect’ as you said, based on principle. Femi Hamzat declared
his support for Ambode just to pay back Raji Fashola’s betrayal. What happened is this. Since last year, everybody in the Alausa secretariat knew Femi Hamzat was the man Raji Fashola chose as his successor.

In fact it was open secret. How Raji Fashola could turn round in the last minute is a terrible thing to do.
Nobody knew Supo Shasore before. Why Raji Fashola went to drag Supo Shasore in is something many people cannot forgive.

Raji Fashola even paid for 4 full page colour adverts for Supo Shasore in all the FRONT AND BACK pages

of all national newspapers. Nobody has ever spent such millions of Naira on newspaper adverts for an intra party primary election. Did Raji Fashola pay for it with his salary as governor of Lagos state? Of course not!
So don’t blame Femi Hamzat at all. Raji Fashola is an un-reliable somebody.
