Jonathan’s presidency using religion as manipulative tool – Tinubu

Bola Tinubu

A former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu, has accused the Goodluck Jonathan-led presidency of using religion as a political tool to score cheap political point rather than promote harmonious living among Nigerians.

Mr. Tinubu, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress Party, said this on Monday during his remarks at a seminar titled, Let Peace Reign, by the Alliance of Muslims and Christians at the Eko Multi-Purpose Hall, LTV8, Lagos.

“Nigeria today is confronted by a divisive leadership ready to use religion as a political tool to rule and divide and to score cheap political advantage. Rather than promote religious tolerance and harmonious living, Jonathan’s presidency believes its electoral chances are enhanced by promoting religious suspicion and using religion as a manipulative tool,” Mr Tinubu said.

The APC leader tasked religious leaders to be more responsible to both their followers and nations, bold in speaking the truth to the political class and against the unruly romance between the pulpit and politics.

“You must above all else fear God whom you serve and be bold to speak truth to power with the same boldness you preach your sermons to your congregation. There is no better time to speak up than now against injustice, the corruption of the pulpit, and the entrance of politics into religion and the unholy romance of the religious leaders with people in charge of the affairs of this country,” he said.

Mr. Tinubu told the religious leader to use the forum to deliberate on an agenda that would let peace reign within Nigeria and also “examine, criticize and dissect the problems that have made men of peace become men of violence.”

He said the forum must come up with sanctions for so-called religious leaders who use the cassock for politics and use the Bible or Quran as the talisman to get wealthy. He said religious leaders must come up with a vision that seeks to promote and sustain peace at all times.

The former governor urged the clerics not to allow religion continue to drive the nation apart, with the rise of fundamentalism in religion helped by fanatics who see nothing good in the other religion.

“Any nation that allows its people to descend into religious animosity will remain on the path of ruination and its people forever fractured. Both Christianity and Islam preach peace as one of their core principles. Unfortunately, rather than promote peace amongst all men, we have sacrificed peace for the promotion of selfish aggrandizement,” he stated.

Mr. Tinubu said since no religion could exterminate the other, the leaders must “reach a new resolution to work for peace to reign in our country.”

    • djay

Why should you wait for people that have sold the future of their children and generations yet unborn. You don’t need to wait for them to drag you back, they are useless and irresponsible.

      • endingNaija

Na true. I just dey wonder say e tay small wey I “hear” and “see” dem here.!!!

  • jane

Hmmmm! I seem to be loosing respect for tinubu and Fashola! I await a time when Nigerians would not make vague statements without any evidence. Smh!

    • endingNaija

Time to throw the money launderer ($9.3m) (who has been using religion and ethnicity to divide us )out of Aso Rock with our votes. Vote him out together with his Pastor friend, the jet owner($9.3m). It is a shame that they(Goodluck Jonathan ati Ayo Oritsejafor) have to put we Nigerians in this shame. So send them packing with your votes.

    • Onike24

What more evidence do you need? Where you on the moon, the whole month of September

    • TRUTH MASTER

Your respect is irrelevant! Instead of addressing the issues raised you are engaging in sophistry. At no time in the history of our nation has it been this divided along religious and ethnic lines. Incompetent folks have resorted to religion and ethnicity to stay afloat. Shame!

      • Easy

Insensitivity and lack of sincerity of politicians is our problem. Who among them do not use sentiment to divide the people. They are ambassadors of peace only when it’s convenient. An apostle of ‘rig and roast’ is an enemy of peace. You can’t go to aso rock or asokoro or apo legislative quarters to roast the people there but the innocent poor masses. How many of politician children are involved in protests and riots? They are in safe places abroad. Yet you are here defending rogues.

        • TRUTH MASTER

President Jonathan remains the most divisive Nigerian leader to date! Remember, fish rots from the head. Good day!

    • Wähala

What is vague about Tinubu’s call for religious harmony, eh? Your respect carries just one vote which is but a grain of sand on the beach. What further evidence do you need after that picture of a kneeling Dumbo getting blessed by a gunrunning pastor, or his first kneeling before fake pastor Adeboye telling Nigerians he had no shoes? Have you ever seen a picture of the Mosque at the Villa? Why always Christian pastors flying around in private jets? Sentiments apart, I think you’re still tipsy from gulping that Ayunsiemento concoction that damages your brains…

    • Maria

Your respect is worthless. The truth hit you in the face… Tinubu just spoke the truth. Ayo Oritsajefor is a political CAN president…

    • Strong System

When you are too blind by sentiment to see the most compelling evidence, there’s no way you will ever see EVIDENCE.
Tinubu is far smarter then this regime….just wait for evidence that will eventually sweep you off your feets.

      • Nija pikin

Strong it’s like pdp doesn’t know what is going on right now in nigeria, they seems to have lost touch with the pulse of the nation there is general consensus in the country about pdp government millions of Nigerians have already pass a verdict on pdp government we all believe what they are doing is the best they can offer for the country and their best is far below what Nigerians want so the only option is since there is no hope of a better tomorrow it’s just from one scandal to another and the truth is Nigeria is far greater than any political party and the pdp have shown that they have no better option than mr Jonathan, the next thing for Nigerians is to vote out the pdp and try something different let’s see if we can get a better deal.

  • JOHN APEH

WHAT IS NEW IN NIGERIA? RELIGION AND ETHNICITY ARE THE TWO MAIN ISSUES IN NIGERIAN POLITICS. NOBODY EVER CARED TO TALK OF ECONOMY OR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT. ALL POLITICIANS APPEAL TO BOTH RELIGION AND ETHNICITY IN ELECTIONS UNFORTUNATELY.
HOWEVER, IN THIS VERY CASE OF TINUBU, I SEE NO MERIT AT ALL.

IT IS TOO EARLY TO START CRYING O. WE ARE ONLY MANAGING DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA. WHAT IS A POLITICAL PARTY SYSTEM WITHOUT IDEOLOGY? NIGERIA IS DRIVEN LIKE A MOTOR VEHICLE WITHOUT A STEERING WHEEL. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO OTHER BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO MILITARY RULE.

AS TO THE OPPOSITION IN NIGERIA, I DO NOT SEE WHAT THEY HAVE TO OFFER THAT WE HAVE NOT SEEN. WE KNOW OURSELVES AND WHO IS WHO IN NIGERIA. BUT I WILL NEITHER VOTE NOR ENCOURAGE NIGERIANS TO VOTE FOR DESPERATE POLITICIANS IN 2015.

THE PRESENT ADMINISTRATION HAS A CHANCE TO PERFORM. I HOPE THEY CAN GET RID OF THE SYCOPHANTS AND MONEY MONGERS IN THEIR MIDST. MAY GOD HELP THE MASSES O!

    • Salim

      AND NEPOTISM

OBJ was a Christian president… but was not a divisive one. He was even the one who built a chapel in aso villa.

  • Outraged

Jonathan is a disaster for this country.

  • Nassem Ismail

Truth well said…..the blindfolded by men of gold using them to get access to a so villa will now start criticizing…

  • Ette

It is clear indication of gross incompetence and total lack of self confidence about what to do. He wants to hold onto power by crooked means forgetting that all power belong to God who cannot tolerate all the evils he has done against Nigeria and its people. May his judgment be fierce.

  • umunnem

Religious politics was started by Peter Obi. It is so bad in Anambra State that he created Anglican and Catholic dichotomy. Our leaders should eschew such practice. Let us look for what unites us, not our divides. Then there is the issue of “tribe” and “ethnic origin”. Politicians also use these when it suits them. APGA used this to win the last elections in Anambra State. The unknown Obiano was able to ride to victory because the popular candidate, Dr. Ngige was tagged as belonging to a “Yoruba” party. The sad irony is that EVERY (yes, I mean all of them) big man in Igbo land made his fortunes outside Igbo land, either in Lagos or in the North. Yet, they use these primordial base to deceive their brothers for their personal gains.

  • Tolani

Is that why you made all the APC Governors muslims and most of the executives in your party muslim?. I think this man is going kolo.

    • oasa

Was he the electorate that voted at all the polling stations?

    • emmanuel

Please note that Lagos State has been Islamised by this same man today.

How sweet to criticize others for cheap political point.
