Ebola: Nigeria confirms death of another doctor; first in Rivers State

Onyebuchi Chukwu, Nigeria's health minister.

The Federal Government, Thursday, confirmed that the doctor that died in a hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, died of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.

The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, told journalists in Abuja on Thursday that the doctor contacted the disease after treating a patient who came in contact with Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American who brought Ebola to Nigeria.

According to the minister, the patient after experiencing some symptoms, went for treatment.

“This primary contact of Mr. Sawyer’s evaded our surveillance team in the last week of July 2014 and travelled out of Lagos to Port Harcourt where, as we now understand, he consulted with a doctor and was apparently treated for some symptoms,” he said. “After four days, following a manhunt for him, he returned to Lagos by which time he was found to be without symptoms.”

The same was, however, not the case for the doctor who treated him as he got infected and finally died on August 22.

“Following the report of this death by the doctor’s widow the next day, the case had been thoroughly investigated and laboratory analysis showed that this doctor died from EVD,” the minister said.

“As a result, several contacts have now been traced, registered and placed under surveillance. However, because the widow is now symptomatic, she has been quarantined pending the outcome of laboratory tests on her.”

Mr. Chukwu, a professor, did not mention the name of the doctor. He said the wife of the doctor has been quarantined and 70 other contacts have since been traced and placed under surveillance in Port Harcourt.

The Minister appealed to residents under surveillance in Port Harcourt to abide by the advice given to them by health officials. He urged other residents not to panic, saying the Nigerian government is in full control of the situation.

The doctor’s death brings to six the number of people that have died of Ebola in Nigeria. The first five, including Mr. Sawyer, died in Lagos.

Why are nigerians running away from quarantine? Simply stay confined and spare us the contermination.
tomorow we blame Government and boko haram, yet this is health terrorism by nigerians..
u ran from lagos quarantine to PH in that condition, only God knows how many u have transfered the virus to while on transit.

    • Costco

He was a diplomat that went to pick patrick sawyer, there is a strong chance his is not Nigerian.

    • Enemona

Nigerians have largely been obedient, many have been put under study and some have been quarantined. The major issue has been the two stubborn and st..pid Liberian government officials. The diplomat should be arrested and locked up.

    • Why won’t Nigerians and West Africans disregard quarantine when those deceitful Pastors (e.g., Adeboye) have taught many in West Africa to simply say: “IT IS WELL. I don’t have Ebola in Jesus name”, which causes even medical personnel to disregard quarantine.

  • Segun Surulere

Ignorance and inordinate fear is the real problem ….. It needs to be made clear that you can only get EVD by close personal contact and exchange of fluids. Unfortunately , this will affect medical personnel , spouses , offspring , other care givers etc.
Caution and awareness is the watchword

    • guy1

Then how did the diplomat catch the disease? Do you think he was exchanging fluids with Sawyer? He met with him briefly. That is all it took. Why do you think that all of the medical people dress up like they are going to the moon? It seems that it is easier to catch than they are letting on.

      • Segun Surulere

Common sweat is a fluid. Hands get moist and excrete fluids. Thus, a handshake with an infected person can transmit the virus especially if you then proceed to wipe your eyes for example or pick your nose . It is that simple.

        • We don’t know where those deceitful men of God are at this crucial hour.

Why are Nigerians not calling for their ANOINTED of the Lord (e.g., Adeboye) to start laying hands on Ebola patients?

          • Segun Surulere

Laying hand ? For Ebola ? You wan kill pastor be dat oh !!!! …… Come to think of it , Pastor can wear gloves …LOL

          • As rich as some of those DECEITFUL Pastors are, i’m sure those one can get a skin-color gloves that will deceive the poor masses into thinking that their Pastor isn’t affected by Ebola.

  • ohireimen

    something.is.not adding.up….i hope we r trying to.play politics with ebola…. apc states are.now contagious to ebola kwo….

    • ifebuche

You are quite stewpede. Everything boils down to politics for idi0tz like you.

    • You say: “something.is.not adding.up”

When has anything ever added-up in Naija?!

$20 billion (dollars) is still unaccounted for at NNPC.

200 young women are still missing.

Boko Haram is still moving freely.

      Ebola don join.

Deceitful MEN OF GOD (e.g., Adeboye) are still LYING.

I wonder why Nigerians refuse to call on their mighty men of God to start laying hands on Ebola patients.

  • Costco

A serious country would arrest that diplomat, lodge a protest with his embassy, withdraw his papers and subesquently deport him for clearly endangering the lives of Nigerians

    • You say “A serious country would arrest that diplomat …”

      Okay, i don hear you.

$20 billion (dollars) is still unaccounted for at NNPC.

Make we hear word. Abeg. This is old news. May The wrath of God befall u for trying to test him.

        • Matthew 5:44-45, Jesus said: “… love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven …”

That’s another teaching that has been rejected by mainstream Christianity in Nigeria.

  • Darlington Mudiaga Atumu

Nigerian government should do the needful and pick up all those placed under observation then place them in a government facility under lock and key where they will be provided the best medical attention….with this no one will escape. ….
For that big man diplomat that ran away to PH;he should be arrested and charged to court for act of terrorism

That Doctor should be strip of his license posthumously if possible, what he has done is the very hieght of unprofessional and quite frankly criminal conduct, he was treating an ECOWAS diplomat in ” hotel room” with symptoms of ebola and did not report it to the authorities, even in his shameful death he has put millions of people at risk

  • Ette

Something is not adding up in this presentation. The diplomat has no Ebola and the person he was treating had it. From where did he get his own that eventually killed him. Fed govt failed to arrest the diplomat and quarantine him like First Consultants Hospital did to Sawyer and the minister is turning things upside down here. How could he have run to Port Harcourt without being tracked having been the one who picked Sawyer and took him to the hospital in Lagos. Empty minister telling us that diplomat had no Ebola. Where is the CCTV that we spent N76b on. What a country. Even here names of hospital, hotel and the people involved are not disclosed, how then do we take precaution blindly. All those who were sent for treatment in the US, Spain, Britain are known by names and be rest assured no other person will be affected by their presence in those country, but here incompetent people at helm of affairs are doing things in secret. May God protect His children.

    • Abiodun

My brother I have said it earlier that i sense fraud in this whole saga. These guys are not telling us the truth. they are just looking for ways to write off the 1.9 billion naira mapped out to fight ebola. We know how to blow things out of proportion in this country for our personal interest and gain.

      • I still don’t understand why Nigerians refuse to call on their MEN OF
GOD (e.g., Adeboye) to start laying hands on Ebola patients.

        • Susan B

Pls, buzz off. You too should go and lay your hands on Ebola patients. Have you not heard, “thou shall not tempt the Lord your God”? Some things are just pure foolishness, like saying because God closed the mouth of lions when Daniel was thrown into their den, then you should try it too. If you have vendetta against a man of God, go and tell him or tell God, and stop spewing nonsense here.

          • Out of Love, true-Christians must sound the alarm about wolves THAT PEOPLE THINK ARE SHEEP.

            That’s true Christian Love.

          • Phoenix

U are not a christian. If u are u will not be saying all this trash abt Men of God here.

          • Here’s another example of the Spiritual Treason being committed by Nigerian pastors:

E.A. Adeboye, Holy Ghost service, Dec. 2008:

“… When I pray for salvation here it will reach you at the various altars where you may be … get up and go to the nearest altar close to you …”

THAT’S FRAUDULENT. Salvation reaches a person as the person trusts in the fact that God in His pity towards us took the Eternal Judgment for us, not through Adeboye’s prayer or physical altar.

          • To: Phoenix

Nigerians called for ZMapp and other experimental drugs.

How can it be wrong for Nigerians to call for their men of God to start laying hands on Ebola patients?

          • Ericson

Haven’t God used them to heal b4? Or is it wise for them to make their churches Ebola healing center? Mind u, Jesus did not raise David from the dead even if He said that the grave of David was in Isreal in is time. They must not heal all to be approved by God and man. Let us agree to the fact that God has used those men of His to wipe away many tears inpite some of their inabilities.

          • Phoenix

Thank u Susan b. I have been thinking of the response to give him. U just said my mind.

          • Nigerians called for ZMapp and other experimental drugs.

How can it be wrong for Nigerians to call for their men of God to start laying hands on Ebola patients?

  • Psalm 35

Patrick Sawyerr has caused Nigeria more pain and damage comparable to what boko haram has been doing for the last three years. Let me repeat my advise to the FG, they should immediately as a matter of urgency summon the Liberian Ambassador to Nigeria, register a formal protest letter addressed to the President herself and then withdraw his letter of credence and send him back. FG must then sanction and suspend indefinitely any flights or businesses with Liberia.

A look at the West African map is imperative, a close look will reveal EVD started off in Guinea, Liberia and Sierre-Leone. There are a total of 5 countries that lie between these infected countries and Nigeria, these countries namely Cote d’ Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo and Benin are completely free of EVD as at today based on up to date reports. The export of EVD to Nigeria was deliberate and callous.
That a man confirmed with EVD symptoms was allowed despite writhing in pains at the airport to still board a flight and travel is an international crime against humanity and all that aided and abetted this terrorist attack must be captured and made to face the full wrath of the law be it national or international..

    • Those Pastors in Nigeria are well-known as ANOINTED of the Lord. Surely,
West Africans should call for them to start laying hands on Ebola
      patients.

    • GABRIEL

My dear u are on course. I concur to ur submission that is the right thing to do now as a matter of urgency

  • BlackieUmukoro

The guy ran to portharcourt, was traced and brought back to Lagos. He was not questioned on what took him to portharcourt or who met with. Only now we are being with stories, first by amaechi and now one chukwu who says, he is the ninister of health of the FRN

  • DANNY

My fellow Nigerian lets not keep on putting blames on one dead individual to another. Instead let us all task Professor Onyebuchi, state ministers, the FGN and co, who are all liars to the Nigerian public and the world at large. How come they have being cooking lies since late July, 2014 with misleading information about this ebola virus potential epidemic.
Well, my only advice and demand still remains the same — they should quarantine all persons under their surveillance (both suspected and probable cases) for at least 21days. Using the 1.9 billion, it is enough money for them to sustain all these people, not more than 1000 in number as of today the 28 of August 2014, in a 21-days quarantine and pay each and everyone of them whatever he or she claims to be his/her earning for that 21days period. Otherwise, if this news report turns out to be a true fact and not a systematic scam & fraud from the Nigerian government, both state and federal, then believe me that the case will be a continuous subtly escalating epidemic that will eventually cause far more than 1.9 billion on a population of more than 150 million people.
Ebola, Boko Haram and government corruption all together will never make us the Giant of Africa in so many years to come.

    • $20 billion (dollars) is still unaccounted for at NNPC.

This your write up tipifies that of the Mayowa Customs above the cheap N350,000.00 Tukunbo fraudater.

Anyway, tell us where $20 billion came from in our 2012 budget and how much was the total budget for that year? If that amount was removed from the budget, did Nigeria walk with POP that year?

Are you so gaulible and unlearned to continue banding this Sanusi’s lies without substance? Afterall, he has gotten what he wanted but must tell Nigerians why he squandered and monies at CBN

        • Is that the only issue i mentioned in my comment?

How about the other issues i mentioned?

    • q

Nigerian are a very difficult people to lead. We are always blaming the government but we cannot follow simple instructions. If this doctor refused to treat this patient and reported to the bad government we would not have been in this mess. God knows how many others are hiding information that can be used to stop this mess.

    • emmanuel

This man is a menyal case and needs to be quickly quarantined at Aro, Yaba or Uselu.

This must be a virus that affects the brain only. FG liars on Ebola? Did you get the details on this Port Harcourt saga?

Biko, everything about Nigeria is not denominated on 2015.

    Folarin Gbadebo Smith,

I highly disagree with you prescription to the extent that you have not make a strong link between the criteria you postulated and actual work performance. I would advice Buhari to ignore your prescriptions since they lack any form of validity. Secondly, I think you under-estimate Buhari’s ability to make sound and firm decisions with respect to who becomes his cabinet members. Bola Tinubu may suggest a few people who Buhari may acknowledge and offer ministerial positions but Bola Tinubu does not decide who Buhari will eventually fire when the candidate fails to perform within 1 – 2 years of being in office. So, clearly, performance, performance, and performance, is acutely missing in every sector of your analysis. I love your write up, but you have not made a strong case for why you think Buhari’s presidency may be in peril. In fact, I can guarantee you that in the long run, Buhari himself may even go after APC members who decide to violate his principles of zero tolerance for corruption and lack of integrity. His credibility depends on being fair to everyone. What i do see is a presidency that will intelligently maneuver the political minefield of Nigeria using very few and simple criteria to weed out the intolerable elements in our society. This will be a slow but consistent process.
