Ebola: Why Patrick Sawyer travelled to Nigeria – Wife

Decontee Sawyer (Photo Credit: Decontee Sawyer’s Facebook Page)

The widow of late Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian who brought Ebola into Nigeria, has defended her husband’s decision to travel to Africa’s most populous country, saying he did so in desperate search for a country with better healthcare system than his own country.

In an article published earlier today, TMZ Liberia Magazine quoted Decontee Sawyer, who is a radio host in New York, as explaining that Mr. Sawyer had no trust in the healthcare system in Liberia and had possibly headed to Nigeria with the hope of receiving better treatment for his ailment.
Mrs. Sawyer shared her thoughts on her Facebook profile from which TMZ Liberia sourced it for publication.

“I’ve read other reports in other papers (not the New York Times) about Patrick’s “recklessness.” I get where they’re coming from, and they certainly have the right to feel the way they do. However, as Patrick’s widow, I would like to shed some light on this from another perspective. One that only I, his wife, would know,” she wrote.

“I knew Patrick better than anybody else (including himself). He had told me many times in the past how much he didn’t trust the Liberian healthcare system. He would tell me about how a person would get checked in for one thing, and get misdiagnosed and get the wrong treatment as a result. On top of that, Patrick was a clean freak, and told me how filthy a lot of the hospitals were.

“He didn’t tell me this, but I know in my heart of hearts that Patrick was determined to get to Nigeria by all means because he felt that Nigeria would be a place of refuge. He has expressed to me many times in the past that he felt passionately about helping to be a part of strengthening Liberia’s healthcare system, but he knew it wasn’t there yet, and he wouldn’t want to take a chance with his life because a lot of people depended on him… Patrick had a passion for life, and he wouldn’t have wanted his to end. So, I bet anything that he was thinking, if I could only get to Nigeria, a way more developed country than Liberia, I would be able to get some help. How ironic.”

Many Nigerians, and even Liberians, condemned Mr Sawyer for traveling to Nigeria despite knowing that he was carrying Ebola virus before embarking on the trip. Some Nigerians on social media have described him as a “biological terrorist” arguing that he came into the country deliberately to spread the disease.

On Monday in Abuja, President Goodluck Jonathan described Mr Sawyer’s decision to travel to Nigeria as pure “madness” and “craziness.”

“Sawyer that brought this Ebola to Nigeria; his sister died of Ebola. And he started acting somehow, his country asked him not to leave the country, let them observe him, but the crazy man decided to leave and found his way here,” President Jonathan said.

In her post, Mrs. Sawyer wrote that the fact that her husband avoided contact with others at the James Sprigg Payne’s Airport in Monrovia as revealed by airport CCTV footage proved he didn’t set out to infect others with the disease and perhaps his actions were that of a dying man in desperate search for help.

“It has been reported that Patrick avoided physical contact with everyone he came across during his trip from Liberia to Nigeria. When he got to Nigeria, he turned himself in letting them know that he had just flown in from Liberia.

“Patrick went to Nigeria for help so that he can get properly diagnosed, and not misdiagnosed in Liberia. And if it came back that he did have Ebola, he trusted the Nigerian healthcare system a lot more than he trusted the Liberian’s. His action, as off as it was, was a desperate plea for help. Patrick didn’t want to die, and he thought his life would be saved in Nigeria.”

Mrs. Sawyer then took a swipe at the Liberian President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who said Mr Sawyer was indiscipline and disrespectful for failing to heed medical advise not to travel.

Mrs Sawyer said if President Johnson-Sirleaf had fixed the healthcare system in Liberia, her husband would not have left in search of treatment elsewhere.

“I write today, not simply because of Patrick, but because of the broken healthcare system in the Liberia, and the government’s inability under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (and other past Presidents) to fix it. Good doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers aren’t given the support they need to save lives.

“President Sirleaf went on CNN News throwing stones at Patrick, a man who can no longer defend himself, a man who worked tirelessly for Liberia. She should be ashamed of herself. I use to admire this woman, and was excited and proud of her accomplishment as the first woman President in the entire continent of Africa. She will always own that. We will always own that. It can’t be taken away from her. It’s something to be proud of. But this woman has failed her country,” she wrote.

Nigeria was free of Ebola until July 20 when Mr. Sawyer arrived.

He became terribly ill on his flight and was rushed to the First Consultant Hospital Obalende, Lagos, where he died on July 24.

Nigeria’s Health Minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said on Monday that although the Liberian government has apologized for the incidence, it was pertinent to note that Nigeria was free of Ebola Virus until its importation by the Liberian-American.

Mr. Sawyer’s action, he said, has placed unnecessary stress on Nigeria’s health system.

Since Mr. Sawyer’s death in a Lagos hospital, two other persons who had contact with him have died of the virus. At least eight others have also tested positive to the infection and have been quarantined at a Lagos hospital.

President Goodluck Jonathan has since declared a national emergency on the disease while the federal health ministry in conjunction with health ministries in the 36 states are working to prevent the spread of the virus, which has killed over 1,000 people in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Sorry madam but you husband was and is still a pig who brought this evil to us. Spare us your lies. If he was here to seek help why did he deny Ebola even when the test was positive? He will burn in hell for all eternity

    • redeem

how can u be so callous——with your words—so scary——Jesus Christ——–the guy left his country for Nigeria–my guess is that he wanted to visit TB Joshua—for a cure——yes his acts must have led to the death of some Nigerians–but with or without Sawyer we would have gotten to this level—–of panic——Ghana has ebola————–yet they did not have a sawyer-visit them—————-the bread winner of the family is gone————forever——-give a thought to the many brothers, sisters and friends he left behind—without any source of hope——-he was the bread winner– of the family————————–the nurse who came into contact with him have just had contacts with more than 20 people————————–after escaping from her hospital bed—————-what do u call that———-blue murder abi————–spare a thought for the wife and kids–regardless

      • Gideon Orkar

Bros no vex o. But Sawyer should burn in hell for all eternity. He was a demon in human form

        • Jagaban

why was he urinating on people?

          • Lappy-Sexy

Sawyer came to Nigeria to spread the virus. He knew the different ways of spreading the virus which includes making contact with bodily fluid of the infected person, so he purposely urinated on the medical team that assisted him so to transmit the disease to them. Nigerian government should take up a case against this wicked act.

          • Balogun Adesina

Thank you my Brother.. I said up here.. I Wrote
” They should investigate this retard family very well. I have a feeling one of our soldiers raped his family when we went to save their country from war torn Civil mess. Now is the payback time and I am sure, he was totally brainwashed during the time he caught the virus.”

“Just the perfect time to pay back. This is my theory. They should investigate his Family very well and I wish his Wife Big Ebola too. Cursed family with lies.. Very senseless talk. He had Yankee passport, he could not go to Yankee. Thinks Nigeria is better.. Oloshi Jati Jati !!”

            Correct

did he———————-do u have clean public toilets even at motor parks

          • Gideon Orkar

Can you imagine. The demon of a man tried to urinate on people and became violent. Were those the actions of a sane person?

        • redeem

I use to have a lot of respect for u–but I am shocked————-at the words u threw at the remains of a dead man and his wife—————–very scary

          • Gideon Orkar

You need to know what that animal did. Patrick Sawyer was sub human. Yes I said it

          • Solozo

Redeem, please quit all these comments? what of what the guy did at the hospital. He came for treatment, why the spill of blood and peeing on the hospital staff if the guy came for treatment and not something else, For once, analyse the situation and draw your conclusions. Nigerians have every right to be upset with the Guy if he avoided contact with people in Liberia and gladly made contacts in Nigeria to the extent of spraying them with his deadly body fluid.

          • bigangel

redeem pls get off dis page u sound like u are a relative to patrick sawyer or prob his wife…wat he has done is evil no other words for it. pple have every right to express their pain and opinion abt dis situation. stop criticising evryones comment on dis page.

          • Chiemele

With my family in Lagos, daily I suffer from palpitation of fear since Ebola landed on our shores courtesy of Sawyer and for once I would say, “may he rot in hell”

      • miami

I wish you would just shut up. Are you Decontee Sawyer? You sound like her. She had in a televised interview claimed her husband did not know he had Ebola because the disease has similar symptoms with malaria. Now that there’s absolute evidence that he absolutely knew he had the disease, she comes up with this lame defence. Like husband, like wife. He didn’t want to lose his life, but he definitely didn’t mind putting the lives of others at risk, speak to me about humaneness again, Decontee? Why didn’t avoid contact with people in Nigeria, everyone who helped including the ECOWAS official who just passed on because of his act of callousness? Why did he lie about not being in contact with an Ebola victim? Why didn’t he just say he had Ebola so that he would immediately be quarantined and save the hospital officials, some of them their lives and others, their jobs?

Your husband is king of callous. This don’t speak ill of the dead that we are so wont to preach is one of the reason evil continues. A man kills, you say don’t say he killed because he is not here to defend, Abacha steals, don’t say he stole, because he is not here to defend himself.

        • Sincerely Yours

          Double votes for you.

        • olutola

I agree with you though I thought and spoke to a friend on the same pitch with Mrs Sawyer. I surmised he may really think Nigeria is way up there not knowing we just blow hot only. Yes if you see our home videos, some men pose as if once you get to their shrine everything is solved including even pastors. Maybe he thought someone will conjure something and pronto Ebola will vanish….think of those home videos. I am just thinking aloud if there was to be any iota of truth in what she said.

      • prince

who be dis, dude are you a Liberian?

      • Mosaku 147

TB Joshua? Yea,you might just be right. I really didn’t think along that line.you got it spot on for once.

pls somebody tell this redeem guy to shut up!!! chai you are not the only christian, lets call a spade a spade, you knw you have a deadly disease, why carry it around if not that you don’t want to die alone, and I also think he might be following some pple’s instructions to spread the virus, who knows maybe his wife is getting paid for it.Let his widow shut up and go into hiding, her husband is a terrorist.

      • Chiemele

You seem to have perfected an act to read a dead man’s heart. Now tell me what does the dead Nigerian Doctor think of these excuses?

      • Lester Copperpot

Surprisingly, you seem to be the only rational thinking person in this forum presently.I got your back man.

u Nigerians can so wicked at heart–aware there are millions of Nigerians scattered all over the west african sub-region-struggling to survive–most especially in Liberia———————–he travelled to Nigeria cause he had hope in our health system——-let us temper justice with mercy for heaven sake—————was he the one who infected the Nigerian who died in liberia with the ebola virus—–?—-do u call the Americans who caught the ailment while treating africans in liberia mad people———-when HIV/Aids came we were advised not to eat monkey-ebola comes- and they tell us not to eat monkeys and chimps—-again———————–I am yet to see a monkey die of Aids sha-stop playing————–the blame game——-the fault lies in us not in sawyer

      • Cornel

Understand that he avoided contact with people in Liberia so as not to infect them, but arrived Nigeria and started having contact with his people. USA has far better health care than Nigeria and he has US citizenship and has family there. Why did he not fly to US.

        • redeem

go to the USA with yr ebola and see if u will be granted entry visa-

seriously @disqus_XEkoqXchA1:disqus wat exactly is ur point on dis page. This man yea i feel his pain he was infected and not dt he wished for it but it already happend d least he cld have done is jes either be in his country and receive care or contact medical facilities here in naija and ask if dey cld help and wen dey tell him to come he wld ave been received cautiously without it spreading like dis. u dont jes carry a deadly disease ard all in d name of looking for a cure. Besides he’s american wat did he come to Nigeria for. Its really really an unfair thing to do. redeem dont compare Ebola to Hiv or 419 its not wat we re saying here. This situation is really a very pathetic one and we hope the Nigeria government plus the medical team wld help put dis disease under control in no time…

      • Mosaku 147

redeem this man is evil period! He decided to come to Nigeria to punish Nigerians. How can his wife be saying that he trusted our health care system than that of America? That’s a big fat lie.
Anyway, you have said it all,”the fault lies in us not in sawyer”

    • umunnem

      EXACTLY MY SENTIMENTS!!!!!

  • Inah Etemfa

Since he trusted the Nigerian Healthcare System so much, why has he not been coming to Nigeria for Medical Check-up and treatment, except now that he had Ebola Virus ? His Soul may not rest in peace.

It will cause u are not God——————-he did not come to kill but to be saved by us

      • Balogun Adesina

Another Ode talk.. It is because of ppl like you we are still backward and could not find solution to our problems..Always blaming God all the time. Awon ode oponu..

Religion is fake and old. We should move on as a people but not as enemies. We may follow other aspect of Culture but this Traditional religion should be struck out for a better future because religion is Archaic and has also expired. People no longer believe in it or just a few follow the real teaching. The reality today is people use it to steal, scam, kill, massive brainwash to mention a few.

It is time to put religion behind us and embrace science and technology. The real poverty alleviation is to embrace science and technology.

See what China did and this is the most potent factor driving powerful development in China, which you hardly read in any literary work or article. One of the requirement to be a member of Chinese government is to give up superstitions. And I like how they even defined religion as ”superstitions”.

In China, the evidence is so glaring. Among the most prosperous ones are the Hans, who are virtually under no spell or inhibitions of the weaknesses of superstitions. This is also why it is difficult for the foreign imperialists to exploit their game around the Yellow River Axis, where the Hans are mostly found. Compare this with the regions of Tibet and Xingjiang, who are mired in Budhism and Islam, and you see the difference.

Extreme poverty, for their inability to give up superstitions and embrace science and technology. Also, the external forces sometimes exploits the Urgur people of Xingjiang, and try to replicate the ISIS, Boko Haram, Al-Shabab, Al-Queada scenarios in Xingjiang, and sometimes, in Kunming, China. But trust Chinese Government. Arrests, trials, death sentences and then executions follow immediately. It works.

        Wake up mr man.

Sorry for using loose words. Pls wake up..

        • boy

Balogun I de enjoy you jareeeeeeee… ignorant na sickness!!! and even costly than education period… that Patrick will continue to suffer in his grave with that Ebola till he ask for forgiveness, of which am sure the death can not talk… that means he is doomed for ever!

    • Foresight

You can do anything to be alive if you are told you have a disease that you have seen claimed your sister’s life within days. Patrick Sawyer saw his sister dead. I am NOT justifying his decision to have gone to Nigeria. However, I believe his wife’s side of the story. Even before reading the wife’s story, I have reasoned along a similar line. May his soul and all other souls that Ebola has claimed rest in peace. May all those currently struggling with Ebola infection be healed IJN. May we never see Ebola again IJN.

      • Nay

What aspect of her version are justifying? He came to Nigeria to seek better healthcare assistance, knew the risk yet he denied the preliminary questions that ought to have helped the caregivers to prevent infections. He denied ever coming in contact with any EVD infected person or anyone who died of it yet he was in contact with his late sister of same diagnosis.
What the heck was he hiding the facts for? It is not Patric of Deconte Sawyer’s fault, our system perennially
fails us, that is why he was able to gain entrance into the country to create a mess for us.

    • boy

The Ebola will continue to deal with him in his grave!!

  • ni8mist

It’s sad that Mr. Sawyer died, but as sick as he was, he has still been directly responsible for infecting at least ten people, causing the deaths of two so far (more to come, I’m sure), and put millions of Nigerians at risk with his decision to board that plane. Not only that, but he was sick on the plane, which means anyone using the same toilet after him, including those who had to clean the plane later, will have been exposed to Ebola body fluids and thereby become at risk for contracting Ebola. It was a poor decision on his part. Very poor.

    • redeem

      thank u

      • ANGRY TREASURE

Why should Patrick Sawyer do something like, that, i hope EBOLA torments you in your grave, you are heartless, even worse than BOKOHARAM, have you ever heard were they cure a deadly disease in Nigeria, we are still looking for how to put an end to BOKOHARM in Nigeria, and you brought us EBOLAHARAM, i hope you enjoy your self in HELL!!!

    • Balogun Adesina

It was also poor decision peeing on nurses in Lagos ?? Wake up ni8mist.

  • Ayelala

Why do people refuse to use their brains

A relative is down with Ebola : common sense should override emotions. The dead is dead. There was no need for sawyer to travel to Liberia in the first instance; The same way the wife has not travelled to Nigeria.
Sawyer should have stayed in Liberia . the selfishness of the leaders and followers is so apparent………..
Leaders : little or no health facilities because they have stolen the money.
Followers :sawyer’s and the Enugu examples

    • redeem

u are a bloody thief–very unthinking–rogue–u travel out to the west African sub region-and Europe-to steal play yr usual 419-rubbish to-defraud people of their hard earned money——that alone is worst than ebola———even in China those taking part in the youth tournament have been locked up somewhere—in Countries like Kuwait–Africans are the only people tested for HIV b4 their permits are renewed———————if u have malaria in Kuwait——u are going to be quarantined –somewhere–far-away from civilization until u are satisfied cured–then asked to leave the country————————only africans are tested for Aids-monkey–the arabs have refused to reverse the trend—————-in spite of pleas—-now methinks i can see with them —-why they treat africans that way-animals———–

      • Balogun Adesina

Ode, mumu talk.. Which one is worst than Ebola.. What about the U.S themselves that stole over 2 Trillions from the world selling fake CDOs even without travelling about. Which one is better ? Call a spade a spade. Comparing Ebola to 419 didirin oponu.
Ayelala is talking sense just that he made a mistake ” There was no need for sawyer to travel to Liberia”
        Replacing liberia with Nigeria.. Typo…

And he’s saying if the Nurse too had remain in Lagos, She wouldn’t have put 20 ppl in Enugun into trouble.. Sense talk. English sometimes na Wahala. Mental Slavery People..

His selfishness has killed 3 individuals for now…. Watch the count go up! …. Shame on him.

  • Nsirimovu Asonye

Why didn’t he go to the USA where there’s a better health care than Nigeria. Stop this excuses it burns our heart Mrs Sawyer.

  • Enigma

I don’t blame the wife for defending him. The fact she defends her Husband despite the deaths recorded in Nigeria shows how selfish she is. If he wanted help, when he got to the Hospital and was asked if he had Ebola or came in contact with a victim, why did he deny? Why did he go into a rage, rip off his intravenous drips, spill blood everywhere and pee on the nurses……….

WHY did the Liberian consulate call the Hospital to release MR SAWYER!! You stand there in the comfort of America and defend your husband yet you are glad he didn’t come over to the US to embrace you!! The world is just pure evil. People are so selfish and fail to think how their actions affect others…….heck, even I am guilty of selfish ats once in a while but we all need to wake up!!

I don’t give a rat ass how much you (Patrick Sawyer’s widow) paint the story. You may claim to know him more than God Himself but I tell you right now that your husband Patrick Sawyer is the devil himself. Why take such a deadly and terminal disease to put a country of over 150 million people in harms way? Let me say it again. Patrick “Devil” Sawyer has intentionally put the lives of over 150 million in jeopardy! If you think of mourning your dead husband, you are sure mourning the devil. His hell fire started the moment he died because he was cremated and the ashes buried twenty feet below!
If I were you Mrs. Patrick, I will bury my head in shame and deny him as a husband for such a heinous crime against humanity and Nigeria.
He’s an American citizen and I wonder why he didn’t seek medical help and brought back to the United States to be quarantined as the other two?
    Devil!

    • Tunsj

I couldn’t agree more. One question that I would like to ask his wife is, Which health care system is superior US or Nigeria?

    • Shola

      Thank you. My thoughts exactly!

    • Obas

      Exactly

  • Dr Patrick Kolawole Awosan

Late Patrick Sawyer’s wife defense of her husband’s travel to Lagos,Nigeria in his deliberate effort to spread the Ebola virus
in Africa most populous nation and eliminate thousands so as to reduce the population of Nigeria. It was the worse greatest crime against humanity which Patrick Sawyer committed before his demise in an hospital in Lagos,Nigeria.
Because, of his vicious plan and deadly mission to Nigeria from Liberia, many innocent Nigerians have died and some are on sick bed now.
Nigeria should severe ties with Liberia and prevent Liberians from coming to Nigeria anymore.

    • Feyi

Simply put, Liberia is Nigeria enemy on from these ebola issue and we should watch out for them, I just hope the Americans re not also involved….., seems so to me though!

  • lynda Agu

FrontPageAfrica has now learned that upon being told he had Ebola, Mr. Sawyer went into a rage, denying and objecting to the opinion of the medical experts. “He was so adamant and difficult that he took the tubes from his body and took off his pants and urinated on the health workers, forcing them to flee.

    • lynda Agu

This man did infect the staff with purposeful actions. 2 have passed…
      Action speaks louder than words

  • Osogbo

Nigeria obsession with ECOWAS will eventually did it in. Surrounded by poorer neighbors and unable to control its porous land borders especially in the north nor properly identify its own citizens I can not understand what a poorly managed overpopulated country stands to gain from ECOWAS. If the country has a strong manufacturing industry based economy and produced quality goods it will have no problem selling it. AS YOU DEVELOP YOUR OWN ECONOMY , IMROVE QUALITY OF LIVES AND YET TO FULLY ABSORBED YOUR OWN CITIZENS IN TO THE WORK FORCE , WHAT BENEFIT IS IT TO GAIN BY IMPORTING POORER NEIGHBORS? Nigeria is never short of cheap labor nor market for its goods. Monkeys see monkeys do was how one American described this mentality. They copy European Union policy for policy. No original concept. Corrupt Government millionaires and bureaucrats love power. Until the disparity in development is reduced among member countries it is nothing but importing other countries poverty. For all those ECOWAS pen pushers in Abuja large quantities of subsidized Nigeria petrol end up in Cameroon, Niger and Chad. About a quarter of the population are from this countries claiming to be Nigerians from the North. The impact of government effort at improving quality of lives can not be felt if it can’t regulate influx of people from other countries especially with no skills or education.

  • Anonymous

Odiegwu!!!!! He came to Nigeria to get better healthcare???? CRAP!!!!!!!!! Why did he not go to America? Was he not a Liberian-AMERICAN? Does Nigeria now have better health care services than America? I’m not buying this one bit! Dude did not do well by coming to Nigeria ‘secretly’ to get ‘BETTER’ health care; furthermore he did NOT turn himself in, he fainted on arrival in Nigeria. Kindly accept it and pray for repose of his soul. Many thanks!

    • nduka ogbonnaya

The onus to do the right things for public safety should not rest on patients facing death by EVD. Nobody in that state should be expected to think or act very rationally. The relevant state authorities should take responsibility for ensuring compliance with rules and standared practices and avoiding people spreading infections.

if this argument is true, Patrick would have simply taken the next available flight back to the US, where he just came from. I am aware that the US have far better health care than Nigeria. This has already happened, we should just learn our lesson as a country for next time. ones there is an out break, we should do all we can to prevent it from getting into our country and also from our own citizen from taking it out to other countries.

  • Eedy Green

The truth is your husband is not telling you the real truth or you are just here to defend for him.
i strongly believe it was a plot to infect the Nigerians. I blamed the Nigerians laziest workers in the Embassy as well to have allowed a sick man to travel into their country.
the Liberian Government knew it well and planned it in detailed to have deliberately inform the Hospital to discharge The Mr. PATRICK…… in order to attend a conference ”ECOWAS” in Nigeria -whilst the so called Mr. Patrick was a company worker.

it wasn’t a mistake but a plot that need to be corrected to prevent future occurrences.

  • Befian

This is going to hit a megacity like Lagos hard. It hurts to see.

  • ping-ping

painful as it is, the guy`s thinking was irrational cos he was already dying.

  • trippi

Why didn’t he head to the USA, Why Nigeria, When did Nigeria become a beckon on of enviable health care system ? I reckon this was a big conspiracy by the Liberian government and the Pharmaceutical companies to bring Ebola to Nigeria where money will easily be available to fight the disease and also enrich the companies involved. Imagine how much money has been and released and how much publicity has been given to the Pandemic since Sawyer died in Nigeria. It was a sweet gamble that paid off for the Liberian Government.

    • Jujubeans

Flight time Monrovia to Lagos is 2 hours, to the US it would have been 10 hrs plus. As sick as he was feeling, he couldn’t have sat in a plane for that long. He was irresponsible but we shouldn’t vilify the man. He was alone and probably very, very scared. Let one of our leaders i.e president, governors or lawmakers/their families catch Ebola and you will be amazed at how quickly they will fly to the US or Europe, whilst claiming they have malaria.

    • kemkem

Its quite painful that it came to Nigeria through this one known man. Otherwise could have been the case. May the Lord have mercy and make Nigeria the solver of the problem without it spreading almost at all. Amen.

  • Omoyoruba

Nigeria for better treatment? Abi weyrey lobirin yi nii…Why didnt he go to USA?

    • Daniel Oluwadamilare Akintoye

      lol….OmoYoruba n binu gan oo…lol.
But serious, did I just hear her say better health care system?
      #DoroNonsense!

    Madam Sawyer.Accept my condolences.
First things first: I hope you and everyone around realize you aren’t safe as no one seems to care about that. If it was a common knowledge that your husband was ebola virus positive why did anyone anywhere permit him to travel out rather than quarantine him realizing the endemic nature of the ailment? Why did you and him, fully aware of the facts about ebola conceive ever traveling anywhere? Didn’t, at least you, realize that even if your late husband had avoided contact with anyone, others in ignorance, might not help contacting(at least customarily checking) him first?

Those excuses are as dump as the act itself and shouldn’t be sold online. Any informed neighbor should know Nigeria is renowned for it’s poor medical/health facilities hence the resolve of the carrier of any contagious disease for succor there is nothing but suspect. He must have calculatingly, beaten all the “obstacles” to his original intent in the pretext of avoiding physical contacts.. Your husband, just like most neighbors envy and hate Nigeria and would do anything to destroy it’s wasteful glory and pride.

For my president, it’s typical of our leaders with unguarded, uncalculated and reckless exasperating statements. You were even luckier it wasn’t Obasanjo. A president with some pride to salvage would be ashamed that a medical risk could access it’s country through a “tight” security. What if late Sawyer hadn’t “given up” on his original suspicious mission and had traveled freely around the country? Who knows how many Sawyers have taken advantage of our ever porous borders to “import” ebola into the country! Nigeria has been so engrossed in Ekiti, Osun and 2015 elections to secure its potential voters.

Perhaps our reactive rather than proactive culture should be blamed for the free dead certificate the age long, inadmissible executive carelessness, insincerity, lack of vision and only power minded leadership has handed us. This is in addition to the new FRSC drivers’ license, permanent voters card. and “boko rams” IDs issued the helpless people.

Thank you Liberia, Mr/Mrs Patrick Sawyer and our (dis) able leaders!

    • BTF

VIP, You nail it gbam! You are a true Nigerian. I sensed true sentiment in her utterances, but then what are mothers and wives for? Read the original news statement, Mr. Sawyer was seen rolling or laying on the floor of the airport in PAINS! Yet non of the Government or security personnel can even arrest him (if need be). i believe there is monkey business here.

      • VIP

Thanks BTF. I should give Mrs Taylor some benefit of honesty for your sake but not of ignorance of premonition.
Anything is possible and believable about Nigeria. May God help us!

  • Nay

Dear Mrs. Deconte Sawyer, death of a loved one is very painful and therefore condolences. I read your post with disgust as it show so much of in-comprehensive callousness and negligence in the highest order. Your husband knew the risk he was putting everyone in vicinity through yet he never bothered and he was engulfed in self-denial. Your excuses is so paranoia as i cant imagine anyone with such a background in the world of civilisation put his fellow human in this mess! Please Deconte, what stopped him from flying directly to the US been a citizen, or the medical facilities in Nigeria is higher than that of the US?
Your role as a wife, mother and human in this case is to offer billions of apologies and not excuses!
Are you aware that the Nurse who is a caregiver and assisted Patrick was a widow and breadwinner? Now two of her children after her death has been isolated and you know what that mean?
Even God will not forgive your husband in death for this callousness! And I hope you are not aware that he has been infected with EVD and encouraged him to get down to Nigeria to infect us?? Because if that is the case, you will leave the rest of you life to pay for this murderous act!

  • Ugly American

Sawyer was overtaken by the Ebola a bit early. The plan was for him to spread it amongst the muckety mucks at the conference he was to attend. He was lied to and used as a patsy. He thought his mission was different than it was, which is why he freaked out. The only reason he had his U.S. citizenship was agreeing to be an intelligence asset. The current strain of EBV was engineered. The U.S. government owns the patent to it. Sawyer was used as a means to spread it. If he had not dropped when he did, Nigeria would be awash in cases.

    • Mohstone

Yeah. Truly its a mission unaccomplished.

  • Onyekaba Cornel-Best

Madam, your story is balderdash your family has deliberately brought death into our land.

  • welter davids

Goodluck…You are the one who is crazy here….You knew that Ebola is spreading in Liberia…you didn’t give a Command to have all those people coming from Liberia and other ebola countries check before they came in….You are now bluffing….Its only how to eat money you know…Yeye man

  • Rifiel

Sad Sad…….obviously, the dead man can not speak for himself now. We can not continue to villify him, he was a desperate dying man, probably wasn’t thinking straight. Nobody gets his death sentence and behaves rationally thereafter. He lost it. But his actions were inexcusable! Let’s look inwards and tackle this Ebola crisis with Prayers. There is no mountain to tall that our God can not move no sickness too grave that God cannot heal. It Shall BE Well……..

  • Frank

Look Mrs Devilcuntee Sawyer, I want to believe you knew of your husbands travel plans and encouraged him on his mission to spread Ebola to Nigeria. You knew he had contracted Ebola and you were quiet about it not alerting relevant authorities of his intentions to travel cos that was the plan. If you shamelessly stand here to defend this conspiracy, you are more of a terrorist and should be hunted like Bin Laden. And if you claim ignorance about his condition and travel plans, is there no humanity in you to make excuses for such a dastardly act? What justification can there be for putting millions of lives in jeopardy except if that is done in ignorance? But in this case your husband knew exactly the consequences of his act! Please shut up, remarry and spend the money his terror mission brought you!

  • nkiru

madam no Excuse for coming to Nigeria why can’t he travel to America for proposer medical care,
just apologize for the lost of two Nigerians and 8 other affected people and
    more.

    He knew why
cant him say them not to touch him and ask for medical personnel to examine him
as ebola patient until proven otherwise.

    Even after
been told that he has Ebola he started behaving like a mad man and spread blood
all over the bed and wall of the hospital room he is in by removing the drip in
    his man.

    This is
total madness madam pls apologize to my country.

  • shannon

Bitter kola (garcinia kola) is said to maybe help against ebola.
Search for information about it on the internet

  • Thomas

Rather I critisize the officials in liberia to allow him board a plane when he is already under quarantine.
Its a tragedy done by late sawyer and the liberian officials to Nigeria. This should not happen in future. All our entry points should be checked especially flights from affected countries.

  • Richy Amechi Fidel

“he felt that Nigeria would be a place of refuge” Why didn’t he seek refuge in America? He’s a citizen of America/Liberian and the US has the best healthcare service worldwide. Why seeking refuge in Nigeria? Your husband avoided contact with others at the James Sprigg Payne’s Airport in Monrovia. Why didn’t he avoid contacting the medical experts in Nigeria?? As far as am concern, the late Patrick Sawyer is a devil and will rot in hell.

  • Ette

This woman should be sued for the deaths caused by her husband and for fabricating these lies. If he was seeking medical help in Nigeria, let her present the medical facilities that invited him to come for the treatment of Ebola, or why did he not get to the envisaged hospital from the airport rather than get to ECOWAS office before. We are told official reason was to attend a conference in Calabar and this lying woman is talking about seeking medical help: which country was in a better position to help him than America his second country. Let her just keep silence and not add fuel to the fire of death her husband has rekindled in our dear country. Again same quantum of lies have been projected by our incompetent, hugely corrupt and wicked officials. In Liberia CCTV showed that Sawyer refused to shake hands with people because he knew he had Ebola but our CCTV refused to show us how this death carrier was behaving when he arrived. Moreso, if our government was serious about the health of Nigerians, information about all those from affected country coming into Nigerian would have been sought and confirmed before allowing them in but our lying rulers were busing with capturing election victory in Ekiti and Osun, stealing all the fund meant for CCTV and wickedly dismissing the cogent issues raised by the NMA. What a set of wicked people in power; all the blood they have sucked through boko haram, communal conflicts and cultism are not enough so they are allowing Ebola to add to their blood agenda. May God Almighty treat them the way they are treating Nigerians.

    • Mohstone

Amen Amen Amen. That is the truth. Patrick sawyer is a killer and so are our wicked govt too.

  • bash

this women is not to be trusted. why didn’t her husband travel to America to seek better healthcare? after all he is an American. Is Nigeria’s health system better than America’s? If he was really looking for better diagnosis why did he refused to admit the result of his test? why becoming angry and urinating? If he was looking for better healthcare, he should have told the doctors in Nigeria that he was suspecting himself of major illness and humbly admit his result.
And to Liberia, they need more than apology to Nigeria because it is their duty to see that infected persons are not allowed to move away from where they were receiving treatment.
This woman knows the mission of her husband and what he was up to. That is why she was shamelessly defending his wrong doing.

  • chris

    Dear Decontee Sawyer,

I am moved to write you this letter based on your recent open letter defending why your husband decided to infest Nigeria with the fatal Ebola virus.

I had refrained from penning my thoughts on how irresponsible your husband’s behaviour was, mainly because he was a human being who had a right to life like myself and also because he had left loved ones like you and his children behind who miss him everyday.

However, your recent letter has convinced me that you deserve no pity whatsoever and has prompted me to enlighten you on what you seem to have so deliberately ignored.

You and your husband are full-fledged citizens of the United States of America. Everybody knows that the medical system in the United States is far more advanced than that of Nigeria. So if your husband’s sole intention was to seek medical help, why did he not contact the health authorities in the America?

Nigeria does not have the best health care system in Africa and that is a fact. If you and your husband were reading the news, you’d have known that a lot of Nigerians travel to South Africa, India and the UK for medical attention. I’m stressing this fact for non-Nigerians who may not understand how the system in my country works. No Nigerian would take your callous excuse with a pinch of salt!

You had the nerve to apologise to your friends, Catherine and Josh for “contacting them so early.” But you didn’t deem it fit to pay your condolences to the family of the two nurses who died from caring for your sick husband? What about the ECOWAS staff who died because he had primary contact with your husband while helping him in Lagos? Did they also not “have a passion for life”? Do you think these people wanted to take a chance with their lives when they knew their loved ones also depended on them?

I heard unconfirmed reports that Patrick Sawyer‘s late sister was engaged to be married to a Nigerian who fled Liberia when he heard that she was infected with the Ebola virus, leaving Patrick with no choice than to care for his sister. This was why Patrick came to Nigeria on a vendetta mission to pass the virus. I also heard he urinated on the nurses who cared for him yelling in anger when he was told that he had EVD.

I dismissed these stories as unfounded rumours, until Nurse Justina Obi Ejelonu gave an eye witness account of how irrationally your husband behaved while on admission in a Lagos hospital-yanking off his IV infusion and squirting blood on the nurses and janitors. Justina was a young, intelligent and ambitious lady who was full of life. Your husband cut short her dreams and the dreams of many others by one careless act of boarding a plane to Nigeria.

What’s going on now in Nigeria? I’ll tell you! A nursing mother and her breast-feeding baby were infected with EVD when they visited the hospital your husband died in. Scores of Nigerians are being quarantined in Ebola isolation centres; their work, businesses and daily hustles paralyzed. People are panicking all over the country. At least two people have died from drinking concentrated salty water because they were pranked into believing that salt and water were a cure for Ebola. The Nigerian government has given out 1.9 billion naira (about $11.8million) to fight the spread of Ebola in the country. This was not in the initial national budget. The resumption date of schools in the country may be postponed indefinitely until the virus can be contained. This means that students preparing for external exams such as WAEC and SSCE may be adversely affected; the whole school calendar will be affected. I’m surprised you didn’t acknowledge the impact your husband’s deadly visit is having on the most populous nation in Africa.

Instead, you dismissed the efforts of the medical team who risked their lives to handle your husband as “ironic.”

CCTV footage showed your husband avoiding contact with people at Monrovia airport, some reports even say he was rolling on the floor in pains at some point. Sebastian Muah, who until recently was the Liberian Deputy Minister of Finance for Fiscal Affairs, said in an email to PREMIUM TIMES that the late Mr. Sawyer deceived the Liberian government into believing that he was “Ebola Free’’. He LIED to the Liberian government that he had no contact with his younger sister who died of the disease on July 8 and that he had voluntarily subjected himself for testing which showed he was free of Ebola.

Nigeria was free of Ebola until July 20 when Mr. Sawyer arrived. He became terribly ill on his flight and was rushed to the First Consultant Hospital Obalende, Lagos, where he died on July 24. Since then, a nation of over 160 million people are being faced with a fast-killing disease they have no idea about how to handle. We had no prior knowledge of how to combat this disease, so why would your husband choose Nigeria of all places for “help”? If we were so ‘competent’ why are we begging foreign countries to send us experimental drugs?

Decontee Sawyer, you owe the government of Nigeria and its people an apology. You also owe your Liberian president, Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf an apology because she has not failed her country like you claim. Your letter has portrayed you as a callous and selfish woman just like your husband. I leave you to your conscience.

I may not join other Nigerians to say “may Patrick Sawyer rot in hell,” because I believe I may not have the right to say that. But the name of Patrick Sawyer will always resound as a man who brought death to the most populous nation in Africa. A man who gifted Nigeria with no beneficial service, but a ZOMBIE VIRUS. I will always remember Patrick Sawyer as a medical terrorist.

    Peace Ben Williams

    • QueenB

      Peace Ben Williams!!
This is not your response, I personally know the originator who posted this on his page on Facebook 1st! Since Decontee Sawyer conveniently blocked her inbox on Facebook, I asked permission from the originator to post his response here.
Here you are reposting this and making this your own. You are a wicked person!!

  • Ral

Shame on you Decontee Sawyer, you have no sympathy or apologies for the victims of your husband’s murderous madness. Your statements show that you are as callous and wicked as your late husband who knowing he could have ebola virus decided to bring it to the most populous country in Africa. Posterity will remember him as the wicked Liberian who brought death to Nigeria. Be wise and keep quiet and stop blabbing to the media about what a good man the murderer Patrick Sawyer was. Let those that have been devastated by him mourn in peace.

  • Jibola Olayori

Watching the woman talk on tv shows she was not remorseful and she did a very terrible job of defending her hubby. I presume the guy is part of a larger motive to bring the virus into Nigeria. He probably had a mission to go to the conference, mix with people, have sexual relations with some promiscuous Nigerian girls and then go back even before the end of the conference where he will be secretly transported to the US for proper treatment and be saved like Dr Kent Bradley and the aid worker that just got released from the hospital yesterday. The point is I have the disputable belief that this was a planned mission in West Africa. Why was the US Army Biological and Weapons Research Agency in collaboration with an American university conducting a research in a local community in Sierra Leone at this time. They want us to know that they have a treatment plan that will work but will be scarce and by the time Nigeria comes into the picture, they will be able to auction it to the highest bidder which will be Nigeria. Why is it that it was at the peak of this epidemic that the African-American Summit held with billions of dollar promised in aid?
We need to think and free ourselves from this neo-colonianism.

  • kate

How does she explain that he did not disclose his exposure to health care workers and then when the results finally came back positive for Ebola, he became violent and urinated on the staff? So many have now died because of his selfishness.

  • Shella Morris
