Obanikoro congratulates Aregbesola, says victory deserved

The Minister of State for Defense, Musiliu Obanikoro, has congratulated the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun, Rauf Aregbesola.

Mr. Obanikoro, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said Mr. Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, deserved the victory.

“His re-election is a confirmation of the goodwill he enjoys among the people of Osun State,” he said.

The minister, who‎ was highly castigated by the APC for allegedly using the military as a tool of coercion in the build up to the election, commended the role of the military and other security agencies during the election.

Read his full statement below.

I congratulate the good people of Osun State for once again re-affirming the will of democracy by their exceptional conduct during the just concluded gubernatorial elections.

The people of Osun State have consolidated our hope in a democracy where violence-free elections are allowed to thrive. I enjoin all other citizens of our great country to emulate them as we prepare for another round of general elections early next year.

I also wish to congratulate the winner, His Excellency Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for his victory at the polls. His re-election is a confirmation of the goodwill he enjoys among the people of Osun State.

My brother Senator Iyiola Omisore deserves great commendation for fighting a good fight. His rare display of maturity and sportsmanship throughout the period of the campaign and the election is worthy of emulation. History will be kind to him.

I salute the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and particularly, our Military and other security forces for their professional conduct which ensured a peaceful, free and fair election in Osun State. But for the efforts of our Military in Osun State, the elections could have been marred by violence. The tireless effort of INEC officials and our security forces in ensuring a credible outcome of the Osun election pays glowing tributes to President Goodluck Jonathan’s strong and consistent commitment to free, fair, and peaceful elections.

Long Live Osun State
Long Live The Federal Republic Of Nigeria

Musiliu Obanikoro, Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Nigeria

PDP is more matured party , no more do or due politics neither win at all cost syndrome! So so proud of PDP!

    • Akin (UK)

Some of us are old enough to read between the lines!! We cannot be deceived into believing all these congratulatory messages from PDP is from the heart. All are ‘greek gifts’ beware of how through these, PDP will carry out terrible ‘abracadabra’ and then say; ‘when you won Osun state, we congratulated you’.
Be on the look out and do not say I did not tell you.

      • John S.

His message is well received and applauded irrespective his inner most intentions.
The die is cast now and I am sure 2015 will be very interesting. Can FG afford to deploy 60k troops to each state during the General elections? Can they afford to out spend the APC in each state APC commands during the general elections?

        • ismail umar

60,000 troops were deployed to Osun ??? You are such a funny lad. So you hold Propaganda as fact ? Ask your self the number of personnel in the Nigerian Army before saying this rubbish.

      • idama

We can’t just speculate! Let’s accept this sportsmanship! Afterall we are all Nigerians! Say no to do or die politics and say no to win at all cost! Congratulations president Jonathan for ensuring that the will of the people of Osun state stand!

The fact is PDP accepted the result, they would have manipulated it if they wanted, But they decided to let it slide, Respect them for that. When PDP won EKITI, We heard all sorts of accusations and all from the APC but the PDP have shown class here and that must be acknowledged.

        • naija man

you are wrong.the PDP tried to manipulate but they failed.

  • odiate obong

very good response.APC cannot be this humble

  • Island man

Koro or what is your name, keep your congratulation to your self, omo ale Yoruba.

  • Spoken word

koro.did you have a choice. of course you most bow down to your conqueror. you are a neophyte in the scheme of things. you will used and dumped like a used condom at the end of the day.

  • ismail umar

I like the magnanimity in which the PDP accepted this defeat, it is good for our electoral system and politics. The guys on the other side would have acted differently.

  • john micheals

Well done Mr Koro. Great Spirit of gamesmanship. The APC will need to learn a few things from here.

why should every Tom Dick and Imam- from PDP congratulate the Osun state governor elect—–accepted that they have to act like a more matured elder brother or uncle—but—–if the president has done so on behalf of his party–that is enough–did APC–do same to Fayose—-of–Ekiti state—till date-? I do not understand the childish way PDP often behaves——————————once APC sneezes u see PDP catch cold especially president—jonathan-its very sickening to say the least———————–how many PDP governors even sent such messages to Fayose—–APC said the system put in place by Jonathan to elect d incumbent governor was flawed- Yet when the same system that APC complained of produced a governor for them in Osun state–PDP is the first to congratulate them–acting like mumu-s—-I like the lagos state chapter of PDP–they refused to send messages of congratulation to him because he Aregbe said the system was designed to make him fail–period -u can’t eat your cake and have it at the same thing–Obanikoro is acting stupid—-is he the minister of Defence-in what capacity is he congratulating him–the osun state governor——i begi—————-

  • kwango

This is why 2 strong party system is very good. Everybody is a potential decampee and would therefore cease worshipping those in office. If you are insulted, bullied or denied opportunities you decamp with your electoral value or lack of it to the other party. Obanikoro is next in line to decamp in 2015.

  • Jonathan

All PDP is trying to do is to pretend to be what they are not. This is what Yoruba calls ‘agabagebe'(hypocrisy). They want people to see them as matured politicians when they are not. Why all these congratulatory messages after their failed attempt to intimidate people. PDP should be placed under serious surveillance as what they are doing is just litmus test for what they intend to do in the general election. I want to see how many security agents would be dispatched to each state during the coming election. Nigerians can be easily deceived. Why is EU telling Aregbesola to go to court. PDP knows APC is a strong bone too much for them to swallow as Yoruba will say ‘ole lo n mo ese ole ‘to lori apata’. Like PDP, like APC.
