Oil Theft: 7 killed as pirates, security men clash

The incident occurred on Sunday.

Seven persons were killed while others sustained various degrees of injuries when members of a private security outfit engaged some suspected pirates in a gun battle on Sunday in Ondo State

The dead included four security agents and three suspected pirates. The incident occurred at Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

The suspected pirates, who were said to have come from Igbimo area of Edo State, attacked some coastal communities before they were challenged by men of the private security outfit at Bolowo junction.

It was gathered that the bodies of the two of the killed suspected pirates have been recovered from the water, while one is still to be found.

The hoodlums, who invaded the community at about 8 a.m. on Sunday, were said to be coming from the Ilaje end of the coastal area of the state, where they had gone for an operation.

Some items recovered from the hoodlums include two guns, 260 live ammunition, 10,000 Korea Currency, 80 Euro, $24, N4,000, one Nokia mobile phone with SIM cards, one 75 horse power engine boat, and one Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card.

Police authorities in the state confirmed the incident saying investigation has begun into the matter.
