Twin blasts kill over 40 in Kaduna as Buhari escapes death

Scene of the Kaduna bomb blast

A curfew is in place in Kaduna as residents mourn their dead.

Over 40 people were killed Wednesday as twin bomb explosions ripped through Kaduna State in north-western Nigeria.

The first explosion occurred along Isa Kaita Road close to the popular Murtala Mohammed Square, targeting a prominent Islamic cleric, Dahiru Bauchi.

The blast killed 25 people, and injured many more, police said.

At the bomb scene close to the square where Mr. Bauchi delivered a Ramadan lecture, dismembered bodies lay strewn on the blood-stained soil.

Wednesday’s blast was the second targeting Mr. Bauchi in Kaduna State in the last two three weeks. The first explosion near his house injured one person.

The Sheikh is a known critic of the extremist Boko Haram sect, but it not clear whether the group is responsible for the Wednesday attack.

As news of the attack spread across the state, and the country, a second explosion occurred barely two hours later, this time targeting a former military ruler, Muhammadu Buhari.

The blast occurred as Mr. Buhari drove through the busy Kawo Market area of Kaduna city.
In a short statement, Mr. Buhari said he was the target of the bomber.

“I was personally involved in a clearly targeted bomb attack today along Ali Akilu Road, Kawo-Kaduna at about 2:30pm on my way to Daura,” Mr. Buhari said.

“The unfortunate event, clearly an assassination attempt, came from a fast moving vehicle that made many attempts to overtake my security car but was blocked by my escort vehicle.

“We reached the market area of Kawo where he took advantage of our slowing down and attempted to ram my car and instantly detonated the bomb which destroyed all the three cars in our convoy,” Mr. Buhari said.

The former leader said when he came down from his vehicle, he saw many dead bodies littered around.

“They were innocent people going about their daily business who became victims of mass murder,” he said.

At least 15 persons died in the second explosion.

The Spokesperson for the Department of State Security, SSS, Marylyn Ogar, said the first attack took place about two kilometres from the venue of the Ramadan prayer session because the insurgents could not move their vehicle closer due to heavy security presence.

The spokesperson of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Lai Mohammed, said the explosion was targeted at the former head of state.

“Yes, his convoy was attacked,” Mr. Mohammed said in response to PREMIUM TIMES enquiry. “He narrowly escaped but some of his aides were hurt. The General is ok, but perhaps traumatised.”

A loyalist of Mr. Buhari, Rotimi Fashakin, said the former head of state was on his way to his home town – Daura in neighbouring Katsina state – when he was trailed by the bomber and attacked.

“I’m sure political Boko Haram are behind the attack,” Mr. Fashakin said. “General Buhari was the target of the attack.”

The leader of a pro-Buhari pressure group, The Buhari Vanguard, Jasper Azuatalam, said the former Nigerian leader was possibly attacked over his recent criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Recall that two days ago, Gen Muhammadu Buhari issued a statement warning President Jonathan and his government on their attempt to muscle the opposition and endanger Nigeria,” Mr. Azuatalam said. “The Presidency raised an eyebrow to the statement.”

The police had earlier confirmed that 25 persons were killed in the first explosion.

Curfew Imposed

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Governor, Ramalan Yero, has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Kaduna metropolis following the twin explosions that rocked the city.

Mr. Yero condemned the explosions, describing the acts as the height of ‘cowardice’ by those bent on creating tension in the state.

He said the curfew, which took effect immediately, became necessary to enable security agencies to restore normalcy to the troubled city.

A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Ahmed Maiyaki, quoted Mr. Yero as blaming the explosions on ‘agents of darkness’ bent on soaking the land with the blood of the innocent.

“Enemies of peace have visited us with their ungodly venom of wanton destruction of human lives,” the governor said. “This blast, coming in the Holy Month of Ramadan, is a clear indication that those behind the act have no iota of fear of God as they have none for the sanctity of human life.”

Mr. Yero said despite the success recorded in improvement of security in the state, it had now become obvious that more still needed to be done to safeguard the lives and properties of residents at all times and in all places.

He called on the people of the state to consider such unwarranted attacks on innocent people across the state as aggression by evil against good that must be collectively condemned by all.

The governor urged residents of the state to be more vigilant with happenings around them and avoid unnecessary crowded areas.

He also advised residents to provide more support to security agencies by providing useful information on suspicious movements and persons within and around their communities.

“The time has come for us to eschew all our differences and confront these brazen attacks as a united people,” Mr. Yero added.

“Those behind these attacks have no regards for whatever diversity as their victims cut across all ethnic and religious divides. It is a responsibility on all of us to unite against this common enemy.”

The governor also commiserated with the families of victims of the blasts and directed security agencies to intensify surveillance while also pursuing the perpetrators of the blasts.

Similar attacks have occurred in many parts of Northern Nigeria.

In May, the Emir of Gwoza, Shehu Mustapha Idris Timta, was shot dead in an attack carried out by Boko Haram insurgents.

The then Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, had survived an assassination attempt in January 2013 when suspected insurgents opened fire on his convoy.

Plus Buhari having Sam Mbakwe in jail, went for one of Mbakwe’s wives. He established himself again for what he was/is letting Mbakwe receive in jailhouse news of the death of another of Mbakwe’s two wives. One (Odenigbo?) also died in jail under the rule of buhari-.

    16. Buhari’s henchman and sponsor, CPC governorship candidate for Kano State, is Mohammed Abacha, the same person that had/ran a personal killing squad, co ordinated the killing of Kudirat Abiola & attempted to kill Ibru; and also stashed money in underground tanks, all less than 13 years ago, Nigerians have very short selective memory. Shame!

    17. Buhari discriminated against persons from other ethnic groups/faiths; and that as PTF Chairman, he employed an overwhelming number of Fulani/Hausa/Moslem people at the detriment of other groups and concentrated PTF projects in the North. If in doubt read El Rufai’s testimony where he wrote about Katsina boys who used the money they made at PTF to bankroll Yar’Adua’s election in 1

Is your surname Mbakwe? Just curious given that u seem to be taking up cudgel on behalf of the deceased politician.

    • Wähala

So now, has it become clear to you who is behind Boko Haram, eh kwa? Your favorite “Tinubu ati Buhari” anthem does not flow today and you’ve resorted to your paid-for distraction antics, ba? E no flow with me right now. BH cannot attempt to kill Buhari if he’s their sponsor… ati, Tinubu. Hahahaa, Chai! See why my people say ‘sometimes it’s good for the wind to blow make man see fowl nyash’ in Igbo Empire? Tell us who wants Buhari out of the way and not late Sam Mbakwe ferry-tale. Wetin concern you… no concern us. This major blunder proves Baba Iyabo’s letter is on money about Hit Squads trained by Dr. Dumbo… remember what I told you back then? E don sele!

POINTLESS!!! SAME STUFF YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW. YOUR BRAIN IS DEAD. BUHARI’S CPC GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE IN KANO WAS RTD. COLONEL LAWAN JAFARU ISA NOT MUHAMMAD ABACHA. ABACHA WANTED TO BE THE CPC CANDIDATE BUT WAS REJECTED. THAT’S WHY HE MOVED TO WHERE HE BELONGS (PDP). AND FELLOW NIGERIANS HAVE ALL SEEN WHAT HAPPENED WHEN HE JOINED THE PDP. BIG LIAR KAWAI!!!

  • Dr Patrick Kolawole Awosan

President Ebele Jonathan and his inept,corrupt-ridden government and political party should be ashamed of themselves with the Boko Haram bombing attacks against APC General Muhammadu Buhari because,if APC is Boko Haram insurgents political party, how would Boko Haram insurgents be attempting to kill their political leader?
The president Jonathan’s-PDP labelling APC as Boko Haram as 2014 political gimmickry- weapon against APC has backfired and burnt PDP image and tainted its name as a party of evil-plotters and massive corruption fostering in public governance in Nigeria.PDP president Jonathan is the worst leader that Nigeria ever had promoting and spreading ethnic/tribal/religion sentiment in Nigeria with his leadership pitching his ethnic/tribe/religion against Northerners and South-Westerners.

Na case of, “every day no be Krismas” because he got away with it the first time, remember the Ohak brothers and the Indie Day Bombing… for which Henry has been tried and jailed in Zulu Land? If you wonder about his brother, Charles, you must wonder why he’s not been tried at home where the crime happened. As far as Höly Wähala is concerned, once the Boko Haram claim responsibility for this attempted murder then, it confirms my long-held belief Dumbo is their Oga@theTop!

I think Obasanjo was mistaken. Bombers were trained not snipers!

MURDEROUS AND MINDLESS BUHARI/APC HAS REACHED A NEW ALL TIME LOW !!!

It is not in doubt that the Kaduna bombings were staged by Buhari and APC to give the impression that they are not sponsors and executors of Boko Haram and that prominent Muslims like Sheik Dahiru Bauchi are speaking out against Boko Haram at great risk to their lives.

The sad aspect of this mindless display of violence by Buhari and APC is that over 300 innocent Nigerians were murdered in cold blood in Kaduna yesterday ….. the numbers killed by Buhari/APC keep rising and counting !!

How long will Buhari be allowed to continue with wanton and heinous murder of innocent Nigerians without arrest and prosecution?

Buhari must be arrested now and charged as appropriate !!!

NB: This devilishly planned and deadly executed Kaduna twin bombings are indeed strong and additional evidence that Buhari/APC are responsible for Boko Haram and for all Boko Haram attacks …… their attempt to deceive and hoodwink undiscerning Nigerians and the international community with the twin Kaduna bombings has failed woefully …. in fact, the Kaduna bombings have convinced everyone that Buhari/APC are Boko Haram and Boko Haram is Buhari/APC.

    IN MEMORIAM:

This comment is dedicated to the memory of Obinna Okpokiri and his fellow NYSC members who were murdered by Buhari/APC as they were patriotically carrying out cogent national assignment during the 2011 Presidential elections.

This comment is also dedicated to the three Nigerian Youths (Owoh, Ogedengbe, and Ojuolape) who were personally EXECUTED extra-judicially by Buhari in violation of the Nigerian constitution and the laws of Nigeria.

Let me also remember Alhaji Umaru Dikko who was also personally killed by Buhari via poisonous and inhuman crating.

    • Shehu

YOU ARE A LUNATIC!!! YOU DON’T HAVE FACTS TO SUPPORT YOUR IRRESPONSIBLE ARGUMENT. WHEN DID BUHARI KILL UMARU DIKKO? TWO WEEKS AGO? YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND ARREST BUHARI IF YOU CAN. I AM WAITING TO SEE YOUR COWARDICE.

  • Omo Oodua

Now we will start hearing APC vindicating itself from being the sponsor of Boko haram since one of its founding elder was almost staged killed by bomb attack. Lie Mohammed, over to your stinking mouth!

  • Sacrificing the Almajiris for Political Capital. Whatever the logic, this was started by the Hausa Fulani Cabal that always resorted to violence for political gains.

  • Chinkataokoyibo

Possibly an assassination attempt, but not from his criticism of the president. He has been criticizing the President for a long time. Buhari should wisen up. The APC presidential primaries is just starting. He should look at the other contestants. This is in- house. The late Emir of Kano was targeted several times to hasten his demise to quicken ascension for some people while their friends are still in power. General, as your party’s primaries approaches, watch your friends!. My humble advise.

  • Okache

Mr. President is a terrible accident the country should never have allowed to happen. The blame lies with Obasanjo who foist him on us and those who are still with the very distorted mindset that he is the answer to Nigeria’s problem. He is clearly not as he does not even know what he is doing as a president. I hope Obasanjo has woken up from the political nightmare that is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

  • Abiodun Olumide Ajayi

The question now is this, who ever that is behind BOko haram why can’t the commander in chief of Nigeria arm forces able to bring them to book. I am strongly of the opinion that. Jonathan hand is not clean when it comes to BOko Haram issue. He is playing politic with the life of Nigeria citizen. And from indication he is a very weak leader and incompetent.
