Over 607 Palestinians including women and children have been killed during the ongoing fighting between Israeli Forces and Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli troops have opened fire on a building housing Al Jazeera Bureau in Gaza Strip as fighting with Hamas militants continues in the Palestinian city.

A statement by Al Jazeera’s spokesperson, Osama Saeed, indicated that while the building housing the bureau was attacked, nearby buildings were left untouched.

He also noted that correspondents from the bureau have collected large bullets from around the building.

Mr. Saeed, however, noted that no one was injured during the attack.

The attack, Mr. Saeed said, came after Israeli Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, made incendiary and threatening comments about the media organisation.

Mr. Lieberman is quoted to have accused Al Jazeera of broadcasting anti-Israel incitement and encouraging terrorists.

“Al Jazeera has abandoned even the perception of being a reliable news organisation and broadcasts from Gaza and to the world anti-Israel incitement, lies, and encouragement to the terrorists,” Mr. Lieberman is quoted to have said.

But Al Jazeera denied the allegation, saying its correspondents have, since the beginning of the conflict, conveyed what has been happening in Gaza to those outside without fear or favour.

Parts of Mr. Saeed’s statement read, “The foreign minister’s comments were a direct threat against us and appear to have been taken as a green light for the targeting of our journalists in Gaza. We hold the Israeli authorities fully responsible. They have put the lives of journalists in danger.

“Our journalists have been doing an outstanding job in reporting to our mass audience in the region what is happening on the ground.

“A threat to one is a threat to all, and this is a dark sign for all journalists operating in the territory. Journalists must be protected while doing their job of giving the public information they have the right to know, helping them understand what is going on. Journalism is not a crime.

“We assure our audience that we will continue reporting all aspects of the events taking place, with the utmost professionalism, with commitment to the human side of the story. We will go on covering what is happening taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our crews.”

Over 607 Palestinians including women and children have been killed during the ongoing fighting between Israeli Forces and Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip.

However, 27 troops and two civilians have been killed on the Israeli side.
