Buhari spits fire, accuses President Jonathan of declaring war on Nigeria

The former head of state says despite being a politician, he has a duty to speak out

Former Military Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan, to promptly halt what he called the government’s “runaway train of impunity” which he said now threatens the nation’s democracy.

In a blunt remark Monday, Mr. Buhari, now a leader of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, blamed Mr. Jonathan for the impeachment of the Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, and the recent gale of impeachment threats against other APC governors.

“Whether or not President Goodluck Jonathan is behind the gale of impeachment or the utilization of desperate tactics to suffocate the opposition and turn Nigeria into a one-party state, what cannot be denied is that they are happening under his watch, and he cannot pretend not to know, since that will be akin to hiding behind one finger,” Mr. Buhari said in a statement.

He accused the government of subverting the constitution to impeach a governor, and deploying the institutions of state “just to kick an out-of-favour state governor in the groin”.

“’The dangerous clouds are beginning to gather and the vultures are circling; and these have manifested in Nasarawa where the ordinary people have defied guns and tanks to protest the plan to impeach Gov. Umaru Tanko Al-Makura in a repeat of the bitter medicine forced down the throat of Gov. Murtala Nyako,” Mr. Buhari said.

“’The people’s protest in Nasarawa is a sign of what to come if the federal authorities continue to target opposition state governors for impeachment. In the long run, the impeachment weapon will be blunted. Positions will become more hardened on both sides and Nigeria and Nigerians will become the victims of arrested governance and possible anarchy.”

Mr. Nyako was removed last Tuesday by state lawmakers, accused of misspending government funds.

The opposition APC accuses Mr. Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of being behind the move, an allegation fuelled by speculations that more APC governors are targeted for impeachment.

After Mr. Nyako’s ouster, lawmakers in Nasarawa State moved against their governor, Tanko Al Makura, threatening impeachment also on allegations of mismanagement.

The presidency and the PDP have denied responsibility for the happenings in Adamawa and Nasarawa States.

But Mr. Buhari said as president, Mr. Jonathan cannot feign ignorance of the unfolding political events, and warned of serious threats against a nation already facing grim security troubles with attacks on defenceless civilians by the extremist Boko Haram sect spiralling out of control.

Mr. Nyako’s impeachment, or similar threats against other APC governors, are aimed at “decapitating” the opposition, he said, warning of dire implications for Nigeria’s “tenderfoot democracy”.

Mr. Buhari, who has thrice vied and failed to become president, said President Jonathan should remember no democracy can thrive without a virile opposition, “hence it will amount to a man cutting his nose to spite his face for anyone to embark on a journey to decapitate the opposition, as the current central government is doing”.

He said a man of power must realize he cannot always do things just because he could do them.

“I, along with many other patriotic Nigerians, fought for the unity and survival of this country. Hundreds of patriotic souls perished in the battle to keep Nigeria one. The blood of many of our compatriots helped to water the birth of the democracy we are all enjoying today.

“Let no one, whether the leader or the led, the high or the low, a member of the ruling or the opposition do anything to torpedo the system. Let no one, whether on the altar of personal ambition or pretension to higher patriotic tendencies, do anything that can detonate the keg of gunpowder on which the nation is sitting. It is time for all concerned to spare a thought for the ordinary citizens who have yet to see their hopes, dreams and aspirations come to reality, within the general context of nationhood,” Mr. Buhari said.

The ex-military ruler said he has a duty to speak out regardless of his status as a politician and an opposition leader, and that he resorted to public comments after unsuccessfully trying to have the president reconsider his tactics after he discussed with him privately.

“In my capacity as an elder statesman, rather than a politician, I have spoken to President Jonathan in private over these issues, but indications are that the strategy has not yielded positive fruits,” he said. “I cannot, just because I am an opposition politician, fail to do what is expected of me as an elder statesman to help rescue our nation in times of great trouble and palpable uncertainty.”

The retired general said history will not be kind to him if he sits back while things turn bad only to avoid being accused of partisanship.

“Yes, I am a politician. Yes, I am in the opposition. Yes, there is the tendency for my statement to be misconstrued as that of a politician rather than a statesman,” he said. “But I owe it as matter of duty and honour, and in the interest of our nation, to speak out on the dangerous trajectory that our nation is heading.”

Mr. Buhari said in his extensive leadership experience since the civil war, he is witnessing the worst violations under the current government.

“I can say, in all sincerity, that I have seen it all, as an ordinary citizen, a military officer, a head of state, a man who has occupied many other sensitive posts and a politician. I have been a close participant and witness to Nigeria’s political history,” he said.

“Our country has gone through several rough patches, but never before have I seen a Nigerian President declare war on his own country as we are seeing now. Never before have I seen a Nigerian President deploy federal institutions in the service of partisanship as we are witnessing now. Never before have I seen a Nigerian President utilize the common wealth to subvert the system and punish the opposition, all in the name of politics,” he said.

He urged the president to “pull the brakes” and tarry “a while, take a deep breath and ponder the impact of recent events in the polity, under his watch, on the survival of the nation and the sustenance of its democracy”.

Redeem or what ever you called your self Dr Jonathan went to the creeks to persuade the militants to talk to the Government, because he knew them and he’s part of the club that Armed them to rig election for them,in the case of Buhari he knew nothing about the insurgents,Let me be honest with you if Gen Buhari dicide to create security problems for Dr Dumbo he can do that openly because he’s not a coward,as for the Boko Haram issue late Gen Azazi said it all in Warri Boko haram is the creation of PDP,that’s is why today the known facilitator of Boko Haram is in PDP that is the former Governor of Borno state

But Buhari’s rainbow partner Bola Ahmed Tinubu impeached two Deputy Governors and the heavens did not fall …. in fact, as at today Buhari is very happy to share the leadership of APC (Amaechi Produces Cash) Party with Bola Tinubu.

It is a shame that a former Head of State like Buhari will wake up to defend a rogue Governor who has since fled the country after his deserved impeachment that was initiated, piloted and masterminded by Alhaji Abubakar Atiku of the APC.

What has PDP got to do with the impeachment process in Nasarawa State …….. nothing and I mean nothing !!!

Buhari should use his tongue to count his teeth and he will discover that the Nasarawa State impeachment process is indeed a fall-out of the local politics that produced Al-Makura despite the fact that all the State Assembly members are PDP by birth.

Knowing his delicate situation and breach of agreements ….. I wonder why Al – Makura proceeded to steal and loot the treasury of the state without mercy ….. the Governor Al-Makura is extremely corrupt because corruption is in the DNA of APC Governors and politicians (Checkout Fashola and Tinubu in Lagos or checkout any APC Governor and you will discover that they eat and drink corruption while presenting themselves to the public as “angels”)

While accusing President Jonathan of failing from the beginning to address the security situation in the country, Buhari said he has never been in support of the state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa state.

According to Buhari “what is responsible for the security situation in the country is caused by the activities of Niger Delta militants. Every Nigerian that is familiar with what is happening knows this. The Niger Delta militants started it all.

“What happened is that the governors of the Niger Delta region at that time wanted to win their elections. • Jezzy

Why is it that Gen. Buhari cannot talk of any other thing than negative things like “Blood flowing” and “Anarchy.” As a bad looser, he sees nothing good with the Federal Government and yet, he lacks the statesmanliness to confront President Goodluck at the appropriate forum. It could be recalled that at the peak of Gov. Nyako’s impeachment move, the President summoned a National Council of State meeting. As usual, every patriotic former Head of State attended to air their views on national issues. As usual, it was only Gen. Buhari who cowardly stayed back to enable him continue with his pull Goodluck down campaign. He has forgotten that he ran the worst dictatorial government that unleashed anarchy in Nigeria before Gen. Babangida overthrew him. If Buhari has a good case over issues of national interest and not from partisan, parochial point of view, let him go to the right platform and discuss it with other Nigerian leaders.Venting his animosity and frustration on President Goodluck belittles him as being a street boy instead of a statesman.

    • Akpata

Go and celebrate your 18th birthday in Otuoke and remember to go to sleep early. You are too ‘milkheaded’ to know anything about Nigeria. Ask your school teacher to correct your foolish statements on Buhari.

        • Niakita Kresbin

And what were Jonathan’s own statement on BH? Every Nigerian politician is guilty of initially under-estimating, misunderstanding and therefore mis-classifying BH. Not only Buhari or Jonathan, but all of them. You should take politicians for what they say about BH since after the sect slaughtered the 59 male students and kidnapped the Chibok girls. By that I mean when they revealed their real bestiality.

“I and other patriotic Nigerians” , “as an elder statesman”. These are not attributes humble people assign to themselves. Here are a few more you forgot to claim: “anti-democrat” (December 31, 1983), “Murderer” (Bartholomew Owoh and Lawal Ojuolape), “Abacha lackey or stooge” (PTF), “Boko Haram advocate” (since you have never had the courage to mention the name in any of your empty public statements). A democrat should be in Lafia lobbying legislators to save your party member from impeachment as Nasarawa governor but since you’re not one, you’re seeking to pick a fight with the president. Wonder who you think will win that one? Not you.

    • TRUTH MASTER

No former Nigerian leader has more credibility and integrity than Buhari. He is known for his incorruptibility and decency. These attributes give him the moral authority to advise Pres. Jonathan and take the moral high ground, as he has done now.

“After the elections were over, they asked the boys to return the guns; the boys refused to return the guns. Because of that, the allowance that was being given to the youths by the governors during that time was stopped.

“The youths resorted to kidnapping oil workers and were collecting dollars as ransom. Now a boy of 18 to 20 years was getting about 500 dollars in a week, why will he go to school and spend 20 years to study and then come back and get employed by government to be paid N100,000 a month, that is if he is lucky to get employment.

“So kidnapping becomes very rampant in the South -South and the South -East. They kidnapped people and were collecting money.

    THE SECOND COMING

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
    Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

We all know the narrative of our political elites since independence, the wretched path pursued is their legacy, but the level of leaders that Nigeria has the misfortune of producing of late is particularly alarming, Redeeming qualities are the exception rather than the rule, given these depressing variables, it is inconceivable that real leaders can/will emerge without an upheaval of the ruling elites

Army Arrests 3 Igbo Traders Supplying Ammunition to Boko Haram

The three suspected gun runners of Igbo origin, who were heading to the North from Imo State, were intercepted in Nsukka, Enugu State, by officers and men of the Nigerian Army while travelling in a bus. Items recovered from them include 40 AK47 magazines, 4 boxes of AK47 live ammunition,100 pieces of live cartridges, one piece of Denim Mopol khaki and charms concealed in a cap.

One of the army officers who spoke to reporters under anonymity disclosed that a police corporal serving in Imo State Police Command was also involved in the arms running.

He said: “When we asked the occupants of the vehicle to come down, we discovered a police corporal in uniform among them. The corporal on getting down pretended to be pressed; he later ran away.

We in Katsina State dont take Buhari serious due to his war mongering posture and supremacist tendencies. This man in the year 2002 urged muslims to vote for muslims only. We have defeated him before at the polls and we are going to do it again during the forth coming Local Government Election in the state. He is an expired product that cannot stop the wind of change blowing towards the direction of Nasarawa State because of never voted for Almakura on account of any fanatical support for Buhari. They voted in their quest for an alternative against Governor Doma.

1(a) Ayo Ojewumi became blind as a result of his imprisonment over false charges and died shortly after.

1 (b) Prof. Ambrose Alli also became blind as a result of this false imprisonment. When he died, he had only one undeveloped plot of land to his name.

1© Pa Adekule Ajasin was never the same after his eventual release and remained sickly for the rest of his life. Whe he died, he never had any property anywhere in the world except the one he had built from his sweat as long term teacher and school principal in Owo township.

    2. He put in place a retroactive law that killed three men, innocent men in my book, by public execution. He left untouched an alleged well known drug baron in Ibrahim Babangida who later overthrew his government.

    3. He jailed Ndukar Irabor and Tunde Thompson of the Guardian on stories that were factually true under Decree 4. He had told the Nigerian journalists then that it did not matter whether the story reported was true or not, if his regime did not like it, the writer would go to jail.

    4. He supervised the smuggling of 53 suitcases filled with cash througth the MMA against the protests of General Tunde Idiagbon and ironically, Abubakar Atiku, the then Director General of the Customs who later became the Vice President and a compromised politician himself. This smuggling of the suit cases were supervised by his ADC, Col. Mustapha Jokolo.

        11. Buhari, as part of his tribalistic practices placed President Shagari under house arrest inside a palatia mansion in Ikoyi while he locked up Shagari’s Vice, Alex Ekwueme in Kirikiri Prison. Shagari is Hausa/Fulani like him while Alex Ekwueme is an Igboman.

        12. Ikemba Emeka Ojukwu, another Igboman who returned from 13years exile just a little over a year then was as well locked up in Kiri Kiri Prison by meanhearted Buhari.Up till today we are not told what was Emeka’s offence.

        13. Busari Adelakun died of ulcer because Buhari refused him to be taken out of prison for immediate medical attention. The then Governor of Ogun State,Bisi Onabanjo suffered similar fate which we were told led to his untimely death.

        14. Buhari ransacked the house of our late sage, Obafemi Awolowo and confisticated his International passport. Which civilized democratic society would elect the likes of Buhari as President, the same individual who overthrew an elected President? Never!

          16. Buhari’s henchman and sponsor, CPC governorship candidate for Kano State, is Mohammed Abacha, the same person that had/ran a personal killing squad, co ordinated the killing of Kudirat Abiola & attempted to kill Ibru; and also stashed money in underground tanks, all less than 13 years ago, Nigerians have very short selective memory. Shame!

          17. Buhari discriminated against persons from other ethnic groups/faiths; and that as PTF Chairman, he employed an overwhelming number of Fulani/Hausa/Moslem people at the detriment of other groups and concentrated PTF projects in the North. If in doubt read El Rufai’s testimony where he wrote about Katsina boys who used the money they made at PTF to bankroll Yar’Adua’s election in 1999.

            18. Buhari is unforgiven. When he “took over” by coup in 1983, even remembered an article written a very very long time ago by Bisi Onabanjo (‘The Mallams are coming’) and a later one in which Onabanjo wrote that people should watch out for that “gangly officer from the north” after Buhari gave a no holds barred speech at some Army function where he was reported to be very openly pro Fulani and pro Islam to the exclusive of all else and also talked about termination of democratic rule. For that, Onabanjo got one of the harshest jail terms and treatments.

            19. Buhari intolerance is worse than Obasanjo’s. When he was adopted as the ANPP’s candidate on the night of the party’s Primaries without prior warning to the other candidates and a few of them protested, Buhari got up and made a speech that those people must be disciplined. I subsequently saw him on BBC’s “hard talk” and he frightened me and the interviewer with his archaic and fundamentalist intolerant views. His understanding and articulation is very much in doubt.

            20. The evil genius, IBB and his crew similarly ran rings around Buhari. On the 10th anniversary of Abacha’s demise, Buhari said that Abacha stole nothing from Nigeria! Despite millions of Dollars recovered from banks around the world and the Abacha family signing a formal agreement to return over $1 billion dollars, Buhari still said that Abacha’s stealing remains an unproved allegation!!!! Why? Because Abacha set Buhari up like an emperor and let him use oil money from the Niger Delta to develop the North without supervision or questions.

By this un-educated public statement General Buhari proves himself unfit to be president of Nigeria under constitutional rule. He can’t reason properly that theft is a constitutionally authorised basis for impeaching Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state. General Buhari cannot reason properly that no motive is needed to obey the law – for even a bad motive for obeying the law is legal. General Buhari cannot reason properly that the Adamawa State Assembly investigated and found Governor Nyajo’s theft proved reasonable doubt.

And if President Jonathan had persuaded or urged the Adamawa Assembly to obey the law, President Jonathan would have acted lawfully and upheld the laws and the Constitution of Nigeria. General Buhari cannot reason propely that theft by a state Governor is impeachable by the State House of Assembly and is thus perfectly legal. General Buhari’s hyperbole that the impeachment of a state governor in Adamawa state (for proved theft) is tantamount to a declared war by the President of Nigeria is irresponsible and without any factual or legal basis. It is not a statement one will associate with a former head of state and certainly not a statement to expect from a presidential aspirant sincerely opposed to corruption in a democracy.

Jerry Gana also a former information minister under PDP bailed Mohammed Yusuf, the former boko haram leader before Shekau out of prison over 40 times. General Buhari you are 100% correct. Your views are shared by national and international observers:

Jonathan Regime was described by NY Times and The Financial Times of London as “Very Corruptand Callous (Wicked)

OBJ noted in his open letter to Jonathan “Before Its Too late” than Jonathan Regime have set up snipers to
murder over 1000 Nigerians that may stand in their way of rigging themselves into power again in 2015

The late former pdp’s NSA boss, Mr Azzazi noted in Asaba speech that pdp is boko haram. He was murdered.

Forner Abia Governor, Orji Uzo kale noted than “…”[Jonathan]Security Agents, Not Boko Haram Behind Bombings” Kalu, who spoke in Abuja when members of the FCT chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) visited him, said the security agencies do this to attract more funding from the federal allocation

Former Adamawa State Governor Nyako noted that Jonathan Regime are sponsoring boko haram and committing GENOCIDE to the Norther residents, jonathan regime paid Adamawa state house of Assembly 8 million each to impeach Nyako. In addition the acting Chief judge of Adamawa was forced to preside over the impeachment at GUN POINT!

Now the US Congress was told in open congressional hearing that” jonathan regime is the main “impediment” to US and International community’s efforts to assist Nigeria to stop the boko haram attacks.

What more proof does any supporter of this Jonathan blood soaked regime need to realize that under jonathan regime over 15,000 nigerians have been murdered since jonathan took over more than 5 years ago, despite Jonathan sharing the blood money intended for security to the tune of over 7 Trillion naira in the last 5 years!

The late military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, did not loot the national treasury contrary to the general impression, two military former heads of state have said.

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled Nigeria between 1983 and 1985, and his successor, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, gave Abacha the clean bill in Kano yesterday after the rememberance prayers marking 10 years of the death of Abacha, who ruled between 1993 and 1998.

Abacha was accused of stealing nearly £5 billion while in office, out of which over $1 billion has reportedly been recovered from various sources around the world.

But Babangida, who described Abacha as a “courageous, loyal and honest military head of state who stood for the unity and development of the country during his years in government”, has dismissed the allegations.

He said the looting allegations against Abacha were unfounded and baseless, stressing that “it is not true that he looted public treasury. I knew who Abacha was because I was close to him”.

Babangida said: “Abacha was a courageous person who stood firmly in handling the affairs of the country during his regime.”

He added that the regime of Abacha brought positive changes in the country which should have been emulated.

He said 10 years after the death of Abacha, his contributions to the nation’s economy remain indelible.

“There is no doubt, during his administration as head of state, Abacha contributed his best to the nation’s economy which we are still enjoying,” he said.

General Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Federal Government to stop the clampdown of Boko Haram insurgents, saying Niger Delta Militants were never killed or properties belonging to them destroyed.

Buhari who spoke on Sunday on a Liberty Radio programme, Guest of the Week monitored said accused the government of killing and destroying houses belonging to Boko Haram members while the Niger Delta militants get special treatment.

The former dictator said that unlike the special treatment given to the Niger Delta militants by the federal government, the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses demolished by government.

So they recruited the youths and gave them guns and bullets and used them against their opponents to win elections by force.

“After the elections were over, they asked the boys to return the guns; the boys refused to return the guns. Because of that, the allowance that was being given to the youths by the governors during that time was stopped.

This is why Buhari cannot be president. Each time he opens his mouth, there is chill across the nation. He speaks the language of war and violence, and Nigerians are scared of having such a fellow rule them, and so will never vote for him. Somebody should teach Buhari how to make his point without appearing like a war monger. And why must he always infuse threats in all his public statements? We are tired of his threats…

    • Angryman

Is it just threats , or open invitation to a coup
The statement by Premium Times that the President should pull the brakes is not correct
“He urged the president to “pull the brakes” and tarry “a while, take a deep breath and ponder the impact of recent events in the polity, under his watch, on the survival of the nation and the sustenance of its democracy”.”

Here is the statement from Punch “Our nation had suffered serious consequences in the past for egregious acts that are not even close to what we are seeing now. It is time to pull the brakes.’’
It is not stated that he is referring to the President here
