Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram on Saturday evening raided a Borno village, killing several persons. They then bombed a bridge along the Biu – Maiduguri road highway, witnesses and security sources have said.
An official of the local vigilante in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, told PREMIUM TIMES that the bridge came under attack shortly after the gunmen raided a small village near Sabongari in Damboa Local Government killing an unconfirmed number of people.
“We received information from our members in Damboa that another bridge has been bombed by Boko Haram on the Biu-Maiduguri highway very close to Sabongari Village as you are about to approach Mandaragirau. We cannot say specifically the number of persons they killed in the village, but the bombed bridge is a fact”, said Abba Gava.
The destroyed bridge would worsen the plight of travellers who often worry about the constant attacks carried out by the Boko Haram almost on daily basis on the highway.
“Now it has become compulsory for those travelling from Maiduguri to Biu or those coming to Maiduguri to either go through Gombe or Yobe State, even though the route Yobe through Buni-Yadi is another death trap of the Boko Haram,” he said.
The police or military authorities were yet to make a statement on the bombed bridge as at the time of this report.
