Ex-Edo Governor, Oyegun, emerges new APC Chairman

APC Chairman John Odigie Oyegun

A former Governor of Edo state, John Oyegun,  has emerged the new Chairman of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.

The emergence of Mr. Oyegun, who will now succeed ex-Governor Bisi Akande, followed intense negotiations and horse trading among various contending forces in the party.

His nomination was subsequently ratified by APC delegates at the first National Convention of the party, holding at the Eagles Square, Abuja.

Mr. Oyegun’s candidature was promoted by a national leader of the party amd former Governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu.

Mr. Oyegun’s main challenger and former governor of Bayelsa state, Timipre Sylva, who was the candidate of choice for the governors elected under the banner of the party, reportedly stepped down for Mr. Oyegun earlier in the day.

A source familiar with the two-day horse-trading between the leaders of the party, told PREMIUM TIMES that an enlarged meeting of the elders of the party, which held few hours before the commencement of the convention succeeded in convincing the governors to allow Mr. Oyegun to emerge Chairman.

In the same vein, a new National Secretary in the person of Mai Mala Buni from Yobe state was elected to replace Tijjani Tumsah.

Mr. Buni’s emergence follows an announcement by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar shortly after voting has commenced that the elders from the North East geopolitical zone, where the position was zoned to, has ‎convinced former National Assembly presidential liaison officer, Kashim Imam, to step down.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the former Interim National Secretary,  who was also a strong candidate, was persuaded by the outgoing National Chairman of the party, Bisi Akande, to step down from the race and allow fresh officials to emerge as both Chairman and Secretary.

Former Governor Segun Oni was also elected the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South) while a former National Secretary of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Lawal Shuaibu, was elected Deputy National Chairman (North). Mr. Oni, a former Vice-Chairman (South-West) of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, joined the APC a few weeks ago.

Mr. Shuaibu’s main challenger, a former member of the House of Representatives from Jigawa state, Farouk Aliyu, a candidate supported by ex-Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, was also persuaded to step down on the eve of the convention.

The current Interim spokesperson of the party, Lai Mohammed, was returned as the National Publicity Secretary of the party.  Mr. Mohammed was elected unopposed.

Persuaded? na so so beg them beg everybody wey step down? Well, i am so happy that a relatively unknown politician emerged as the chairman, it will ultimately boost the image of the apc as a serious political party.

I doubt if any one can threaten Lai Muhammed’s position.

The Rivers and Imo State Governors, Rotimi Amaechi and Rochas Okorocha have suffered another major political set back as their hope of picking the vice presidential ticket of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 general elections has been sealed by the new arrangement of the party leadership.

In the party’s zoning arrangement, the South-South geopolitical zone where Governor Amaechi comes from has been given the National chairmanship of the APC, which effectively rules out the zone from any bigger elective political office on the party’s platform.

The North Central and South East Zones where APC claimed that they have few supporters and little electoral chance in 2015, were allocated with minor offices of Publicity and Organising secretaries.

The Party is still looking at the option of Buhari/Tinubu or Kwankwaso and any South West Christian as his Vice presidential candidate for the February, 2015 Election

APC has again demonstrated their hatred to internal democracy. Not one of its national officers was elected by ordinary members of the party. People were simply intimidated to step down under consensus abracadabra. ordinary card carrying members had no choice or in put in who becomes their national leader. A fore taste on how APC presidential candidate will be chosen. APC has proved to the world that it an assembly of anti democratic renegades. If this was PDP, Premium rags would have gone to town with smears of candidate imposition but since it is ‘beloved’ APC, it is all well and good. WHO VOTED FOR YOU, MR OYEGUN?

  • Mamman Bako

Thank God the coke-head Sylva did get it, APC would gone up in smoke.

  • SpecialAdvisor

APC needs to come up with a platform first to show how they can deliver.

  • Truthometer

So far so good. Whatever it is, if APC should take the reign of power tomorrow, and they refused to do the right thing, just like PDP government is doing right now, we shall still be here to hammer them unrelentlessly, until they see reason or we kick them out in the next election. That is the way our democracy is going to be beneficiary to all Nigerians.
