Kano Pillars on Wednesday defeated Bayelsa United 1-0 in a rescheduled Week 19 match.
The match, held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, was postponed from last Saturday.
Striker Gambo Mohammed scored the only goal of the match in the 30th minute of the game.
A minute’s silence was observed before the match commenced in honour of the late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero. Kano Pillars players also wore black armbands for the match.
The victory elevated Pillars to the number one spot on the table with 31 points from 18 matches.
Although Pillars are on the same point as Nasarawa United, they lead on goals difference as they have a goals difference of +9, while Nasarawa has +5.
Pillars still have a game in hand against Dolphins on Saturday in their final match of the first half of the season.
In another rescheduled match, Abia Warriors forward, Peter Onyekachi, scored a hat-trick for his team to secure victory against Nembe City.
The match, which ended 4-0, was played at the Umuahia township stadium.
Onyekachi scored the first goal of the match in the 28th minute from a penalty spot. He doubled the lead with another strike in the 50th minute while Jackson Daniel scored the third goal.
The first half ended 3-0.
Onyekachi scored his third goal and the team’s fourth in the 87th minute via a penalty after he was brought down by a Nembe City defender inside the box.
Abia Warriors now have 30 points from 19 games.
