Chibok Schoolgirls: Group commends Nigerian military

The group said comments from the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Bardeh, were reassuring.

The Grand Alliance Against Terrorism, GAAT, an Abuja-based non-governmental organisation, has commended the military’s search for the abducted Chibok girls.

The group said comments from the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Bardeh, were reassuring.

Ariyo Atoye, the Secretary-General of the alliance, made these remarks in Abuja on Tuesday at a rally to pray for the release of the girls.

“We have reassuring news from the CDS that they have sighted where the girls are kept, and this alone is cheering news,” he said.

He appealed to Nigerians not to distract the military in its effort to rescue and bring the girls home safely,

“The military is better equipped to rescue the girls and no one should see them as being incompetent,” he said.

Mr. Atoye called on Nigerians to desist from politicising the issue as such would aggravate the already tense situation.

“Winning the war against Boko Haram is a collective responsibility, everybody must be involved in this fight,” he said.

He added that the best news every Nigerian would want to hear now was that the girls had been rescued.

The group, however, took time to condemn the activities of Boko Haram.

Mr. Atoye said to defeat terrorism required collective efforts, and that it was not enough for Boko Haram to release the girls, but they must put an end to terrorism in the country.

The group led hundreds of women, youth and secondary school students to pray for the safe return of the girls.

Gloria Timothy, a student of Junior Secondary School, Galadimawa, appealed to the Boko Haram sect to have a change of heart and release the girls as a gift to children celebrating children’s day this month all over the world.

She called on members of the sect to embrace peace to foster national development and progress.
