The victim was identified as Wale Odumosu.
A 26-year-old man died in a flood on Thursday while trying to save a cow, residents have said.
Residents of Ijebu-Ode town of Ogun State, where the incident occurred, identified the victim as Wale Odumosu.
The father of two was said to have been trying to rescue the cow caught in the flood when he was drowned in a drainage channel during Thursday’s heavy rainfall in the area.
Speaking with journalists on Friday, residents of the area blamed the incident on the on-going road construction in the town which they said re-channeled the water and increased its volume.
According to them, the volume of water made it impossible for anyone to attempt rescuing Mr. Odumosu who was said to have arrived from Lagos an hour before the incident.
“Wale has just returned from Lagos barely an hour before the incident happen. He wanted to hold the cow by the horn, but himself and the cow fell into the drainage channel and they were swept away by the flood,”a resident said.
Another resident, who said he witnessed the incident, said Mr. Odumosu fell into the drainage when he missed his step while going home after rescuing the animal.
In his reaction, the Chairman, Isope Community Landlord Association, Mushafau Osinbanjo, also blamed the incident on the re-channelisation of the drainage coming from Ijebu Ode township into the area.
Mr. Osinbanjo said that another resident was also swept away by flood on Wednesday after a similar downpour.
