We won’t rest until Chibok schoolgirls are found- Nigerian intelligence chief

Defence Minister, Aliyu Gusau

“We will not know peace until these girls are found. We must agree as a people that this is the time to end the menace of Boko Haram,” Mr. Oke said.

The Director General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ayo Oke, has said that the agency will not rest until the over 250 girls abducted from Chibok are rescued.

The girls were abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in their dormitory at the Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State, on the night of April 14.

The abduction has so far gained internal attention with countries like the United States and United Kingdom rendering assistance to Nigeria for their release.

Mr. Oke briefed the Presidential Fact-Finding Committee on the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls during a closed door meeting attended by Aliyu Gusau, the Minister of Defence, and Mohammed Abubakar, the Inspector General of Police.

The intelligence chief said Nigerians must agree as a people to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

“We will not know peace until these girls are found. We must agree as a people that this is the time to end the menace of Boko Haram,” Mr. Oke said.

He also noted that the abduction of the schoolgirls has awakened a new sense of humanity and collective pain to all Nigerians and the country’s global friends.

Mr. Oke said the NIA and the intelligence and security agencies are doing everything possible to ensure that the girls are safely reunited with their families.

In his reaction, Mr. Gusau described the abduction as ‘unfortunate.”

He said the Boko Haram should have been dealt with a long time ago.

He also pledged that the Ministry of Defence will support the realisation of the committee’s objectives.

The chairman of the committee, Ibrahim Sabo, stressed the crucial role of the NIA in the fight against terrorism.

Also speaking, Mr. Abubakar informed the Committee members of an on-going investigation and pursuit of leads that might assist in securing freedom for the kidnapped schoolgirls.
