Unknown arsonists on Saturday set ablaze the campaign office of Ibrahim Gobir, located on Western Bye-pass Road, Sokoto.
The News Agency of Nigeria the office, a block of six rooms, was partially razed by the attackers, who struck in the early hours of the day.
Mr. Gobir, an All Progressives Congress lawmaker, who represents Sokoto East Senatorial District, expressed shock at the incident, which he described as “barbaric and heinous’’.
The senator, who spoke through his Special Assistant, Almustapha Hamza, condemned the act, and advised Nigerians against “politics of violence, chaos and destruction.’’
He, however, advised his supporters to remain calm and to continue to be law abiding.
Mr. Gobir said he lost property worth “about N15 million,’’ and regretted that many sensitive items like computers and stationery were burnt.
The Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Shuaibu Gambo, confirmed the incident. He said the security guard was at the building was being detained by the police.
“We are detaining him for further interrogation; we want to ensure a thorough investigation into this incident,” he said.
