Why we honoured Abacha – Nigerian government

Former military Head of State, Sani Abacha

The military dictator ruled Nigeria for five years.

The Nigerian government on Friday said although late General Sani Abacha’s regime was one of the most controversial in Nigeria’s history, the military dictator deserved to be honoured.

The government also explained why Mr. Abacha, Nigeria’s military dictator from 1993 to 1998, was among those who received the centenary award for 100 Nigerians.

The government stated this position in the awardees’ brochure where a brief citation was written for each recipient and reasons given why he or she deserved the award.

The citation and reasons where read during the Centenary honours Award night held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The federal government said Mr. Abacha was also a Nigerian soldier and former leader. The government said his regime recorded unprecedented economic achievements in Nigeria’s history.

The Federal Government also said Mr. Abacha oversaw an increase in the country’s foreign exchange reserves from $494 million in 1993 to $9.6 billion by the middle of 1997; and reduced the external debt of Nigeria from $36 billion in 1993 to $27 billion in 1997.

Mr. Abacha, the government noted, had brought all the controversial privatisation programs of the Babangida administration to a halt, reduced an inflation rate of 54 per cent inherited from the Ibrahim Babangida administration to 8.5 per cent between 1993 and 1998, while the nation’s primary commodity, oil, was at an average of $9 per barrel.

Mr. Babangida was also among the 100 honoured.

Mr. Abacha’s administration was also credited with creating the most ‘comprehensive and realistic blueprint’ for Nigeria’s development through Vision 2010 committee chaired by his predecessor, Ernest Shonekan.

Mr. Abacha’s regime was characterised by massive corruption, state-sponsored murder and assassination, and random imprisonment of persons seen as critical of government.

Many Nigerians hunted by the government also sought exile abroad.

Some of those who died either directly in the hands of the state or believed to have been murdered by the government include Ken Saro-Wiwa and other Ogoni leaders, Shehu Yar’Adua, and Kudirat Abiola.

Those imprisoned include Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former president, journalist Kunle Ajibade and others.

The federal government also recently said it spent the over $500 million stolen money recovered from the Abacha’s on rural development.

  • frank

Simple, GEJ is hoping to be honoured one day depite the mess he is making of things right now.

  • Garden-City Boy

Honor for Abacha, the celebrated thief and brutal gwodo-gwodo butcher from Niger…or is it Chad, bags a national honor from a Nigerian President? Only a few days ago, the Finance Minister was explaing how the the FG spent teh “ABACHA LOOT”. Days later he is celebrated and honored with a national award. ABACHA LOOT… then NATIONAL HONOR. This is to hope that he chokes in hell with honors.
. Okay-O! Let;s see how it buys Kano votes for Jonathan in 2015. Abacha loot, then national honor.

    • Night Crawler

I really don’t know what to say, this country is not moving forward at all

  • okwu

Didn`t anybody read of Abachas achievements? He has the best records economic record. Open your brain Nigerians. He didnt steal any money. Its all a lie, cooked by the west and sold by yoruba london control activists. Abacha was never a freind of the west, why should he hide money in the west? OBJ, IBB, Atiku are all billionaire with money around the world in cronies account, yet they are heros

    • esaulogbon

      Hmmmmmmm!

      • okwu

Abacha didn’t loot anything. Abacha left $9.6billion for abdulsallam. Abacha tried to wipe out the cabal that is now fighting GEJ. They should show us how Abachas loots got to Swiss. Who put it there and what that’s persons relationship with Abacha was and what happened to the person later on.
The things they did to Abacha, they are trying to do to GEJ today. All of a sudden, $20 billion is missing but we still have strong economy. If they succeed and kill Jonathan now, he will overnight have billions allover Europe.

        • Night Crawler

Just cover your face with shame, because you are not making any sense in this comment, remember when abacha’s wife came out that even if FG seized all there property, they won’t be as poor as dangote

    • Night Crawler

Hmmmm, all because of the love you have for PDP has blocked your sense of reasoning, FG seized some abacha’s looted account and property, and his wife came out and say it in national TV, that even if they seized all their money and property they will never be as poor as dangote

    • Ide4u

GEJ administration and Confusion Break Backbone!! Next Year GEJ will honor Sanusi based on his achievements.

  • jinka

you guys can say what you wish, my take on this matter is that thus Jona guy does not have the slightest idea of what governance stands for. the government should be the moral compass of the governed. pure and simple!

  • Comfortkay

    NIGERIA I HAIL THEE

  • Night Crawler

Abacha one of the greatest looters of all times, they gave him an award… Even the vise president said everyone one is a winner and deserves an award, his including Boko Haram and Militants, bunch of hypocrites campaigning for 2015, they will all fail

  • Night Crawler

What an insult to African democracy, what an insult to what nationalist fought for, what an insult to those who were assassinated or were victim of Abacha administration, what an insult to Justice, what are insult to Nigerians

  • Night Crawler

If this achievement are true that means a dead Abacha performed well than living GEJ

  • Bigzy

This a a load of nonsense! there is no basis under which such a brute / thief should qualify for honour. A terribly discreditable exercise indeed.

  • femi

Now the pin head and his advisers have really lost it totaly and nigeria is doomed with his argument the germans should be honouring adolph hitler what a shame

  • Ojewe Evuarherhe

The retired Brigadier General Alabi Isama’s Tragedy of Victory has brought more light to the Nigerian Civil war and the real soldiers who fought to keep Nigeria One. General Bejamin Adekunle who deserves an award more than those parading themselves as heroes today is living in obscurity and unsung. When will Nigeria wake up to give honor to real heroes instead of the hyenas and usurpers of victory who have held our country to ransome?
