Boko Haram attacks: Governor Nyako blames Nigerian government, says emergency rule defeated

Governor Murtala Nyako

Mr. Nyako blasts the federal government for poor handling of the Boko Haram crisis

By, Babayola  Jauro

As anger and frustration continues to mount over the incessant killings by suspected Boko Haram members, the Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, on Thursday said the federal government imposed state of emergency in affected states had failed.

Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe have been under emergency rule since May 2013.

Mr. Nyako in an interview with journalists in Adamawa on Thursday said the Boko Haram crisis was getting out of hand and new strategies were needed to tackle it.

The governor was reacting to the latest attacks by the sect in Madagali and Michika, in Adamawa. He said the state of emergency slammed on Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States had been defeated.

Mr. Nyako criticised the federal government, which controls all Nigeria’s security agencies, for failing to foil Monday’s attack on the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Yobe State, where at least 29 students were killed. He said the attack was predictable since school children had previously been murdered in the same way, in the same state.

“There is no excuse whatsoever. We want to know more from the authorities. By now, the authorities should be able to know what is happening. We should be able to know where these arms are manufactured and even the signatures of the weapons. We ought to know who ordered it, who paid for it, how did it come to the country, from where were they shipped, through which port in Nigeria they arrived and who cleared it.

“President, Vice President, Governors and the military – they are the only groups that pass checkpoints without being searched and which of these groups are conveying these arms to the scene of the action. We want to know,” he stated.

He alleged negligence on the part of security officials in preventing several attacks including that on the school and in the death of a retired army general, Mamman Shuwa, in 2012.

The governor said the army often failed to respond during the course of attacks by the outlawed sect. He demanded to know why there was always delay in the military’s response to attacks.

“The other aspect is that army withdrew from the checkpoint, before the attack in Yadi –Buni, who ordered the withdrawal. We also have a case where General Shuwa was killed by so called Boko Haram. There are army unit there but they didn’t respond during the incident, who told them not to respond, when Shuwa was being attack?

“The air force base was being raided, there is unit of army nearby, who gave them order not to response until all the aircraft were destroyed?

“These are questions that need answers. So either this thing is controlled by unknown fellows or unknown Boko Haram strategic commanders in the defence system or staged-managed. We have reached a point to come out and tell them our displeasure over the way the situation is escalating,’’ he said.

He said the recent attacks in a nation already fatigued by Boko Haram killings had ridiculed President Goodluck Jonathan’s claim of success against the sect.

Please, prevail on the President to lift the emergency declaration. It is of no value. The state governors should be allowed to take total control for an effective solution. Do not delay in making your demands known to the FG, Mr Nyarko, for after all, you are a retired military admiral or whatever.

    • change 2014-2015

gej should able to put his security around the state, it shows the gej is too slow to make any progress in that state. he has not done well to curb out the boko haram.

      • Garden-City Boy

Having tried with Jonathan to deal with Boko Haram in Adamawa State for 4 years without success, do you think we should continuing doing the same thing that does not work? Have Gov. Nyarko take it over, he is a military man, Jonathan has no military background. For him to sit on his shaggy butt and screaming for Jonathan’s help. What kind of navy officer is he…quota officer?
Or do you all want the amnesty life-line again? That could be a long shot.

Jonathan should withdraw our army from the north east and allow the governors from the north east and their people to solve the problem of Boko haram. It appears they have the solution to it. Since military operation under your command have failed it is time to retreat and allow Nyako and Shettima to send their own motivated army or whatever way they deem fit to solve the problem. They caused boko haram so they will know how best to solve it. When kidnapping was on rampage in Abia state the state governor and all the people of Abia gave JTF all the support they needed and kidnapping was reduced to minimum level. During the Niger Delta agitation all the political leaders of the Niger Delta came together and supported yardua. I remember this Jonathan was sent by yardua to visit the MEND camp without security and he talked to them MEND respected their leaders and laid down their arms.
What is happening in the north is a complete failure of leadership in the north. When the issue of boko haram started most of the leaders from there were blaming it on injustice. They were demanding Jonathan to solve the problem. The northern leaders have not shown genuine and sincere effort to deal with boko haram issue claiming that Jonathan is the C IN C.
The northern leaders can’t claim they love their people more than Jonathan. If emergency rule have failed may be it is high time the army should bomb north east out of Nigerian map.

May God judge you for your careless and silly remarks. Pls read the oath the President took before he came into office. If your president doesnt see north east as part of his constituency then he has no business being the president. He is the sole authority to the Armed Forces and has all the power at his disposal to solve the problem. One day the problem will get to your doorstep and then lets see what you say.

don’t mind those pdp , it shows that they are devilish people they are not ready to secure the lifes of nigerias.

    • Boy

I mostly don’t like responding to fools like u, but it make me feel may be u are a fool by ignorance. 1. The north east have produce the finest military generals that Nigeria have ever produce, without mentioning civil war heroes from NE which your grand parents knew very well, gen sale maina who crush BH in 48 hrs in 2009 before they regroup when they learn that the army is headed by cawords from SS and SE. gov murtala Nyako is a retired admiral of the navy. GEJ forcefully retired the likes of mania who are the generals to the core and promoted cawords who are no better than a dead body. 2. It takes the efforts of civilian JTF to flush out BH element in Maiduguri and Damaturu to the bushes, let him withdraw the forces and see, Wallahi it wl not take a week when the civilian JTF were propery arm to defeat BH and bring peace.

    • change 2014-2015

it shows the attitude of you pdp that you don’t care about the human feelings and you expect nigeria to vote you in come 2015, that is the main reason why we are clamoring for change.

  • Bosah

Where is the Northern Elders Forum. The silence of this group is rather deafening. They accused Ihejirika of using too much force on BH and threatened to file a case against him at the ICC. Now that he is retired, the tact and approach has changed and the BH, is as bold as ever.

They rather their boys are alive, rampaging and killing innocent people, than be dislodged by the army. Can’t have it both ways.

    • PolyGon2013

GEJ is the Commander in Chief. Therefore, he is to be blamed. Of course, you can also blame the accomplice.

  • Angryman

    This Governor Nyako is funny
“President, Vice President, Governors and the military – they are the only groups that pass checkpoints without being searched and which of these groups are conveying these arms to the scene of the action. We want to know,” he stated – soldiers are now collecting 10, 20 , 50 Naira at checkpoints like the Police ; unconcerned about whoever you are or whatever you are carrying

We ought to know who ordered it, who paid for it, how did it come to the country, from where were they shipped, through which port in Nigeria they arrived and who cleared it – let him ask the sponsors ; they are his brothers

As anger and frustration continues to mount over the incessant killings by suspected Boko Haram members, the Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, on Thursday said the federal government imposed state of emergency in affected states had failed. – I said it then that they will do everything possible to make sure the emergency does not work; they are more interested in amnesty and the accompanying money

Is Mr Nyakko not in thesame Government. He Should wake up Because is a collected effort.
Nigeria Belong to Everybody. We should stop Trading Blames and come together To fight for justice.

BLAME THE NSA AND Leaders of Islamic North

It is wrong to blame GEJ for the insecurity in the country,
especially in the North East Zone. The national security adviser (NSA)
has been mandated by the president to do all that is necessary to stop
the mayhem. But is he loyal to the president or to the Northern Islamic
Oligarchs? I doubt that he is loyal to the president.

The NSA is Ret. Army General Dasuki whom I suspect is working for APC
and Northern Islamists in a coordinated assult to make the president
seem weak. It’s all part of the program to bring the presidency back to
the Islamic North. In doing this they are willing to sacrifice the blood
of innocent civilians, including innocent school children while their
    own children are safe abroad.

How long will ordinary northerners stand this evil
