BREAKING: SSS detains, seizes Sanusi’s passport

Sanusi Lamido

Officials of the State Security Service, SSS, have seized the travelling documents of suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, shortly after he arrived Lagos from Niger, where he had gone to attend a meeting of governors of central banks in the West African sub-region.

Shortly after his plane landed at the ExecuJet Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, he was accosted by plain clothe operatives who detained him briefly and insisted he must surrender his passport.

They also insisted that he would not be allowed to leave the airport until the Lagos state director of the SSS arrives.

But after a while, the operatives had a change of heart after communicating with their superiors. The CBN governor was allowed to leave but only after his passport was confiscated.

PREMIUM TIMES had earlier exclusively reported the plans to arrest Mr. Sanusi on his return to the country from neighbouring Niger.

The governor was suspended in absentia, while attending a three-day meeting of the West African Central Bank Governors.

The embattled governor had himself became aware of the plan to arrest him, compelling him to change his travel plans.

He landed in Lagos instead of Abuja.

In Lagos, Mr. Sanusi’s associates and friends, led by a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir El-Rufai, were on hand to receive him at the airport.

They drove out of the airport in a convoy heading towards Ikoyi. A member of the delegation said Mr. Sanusi was heading to a friend’s place to relax.

Earlier today, the President ordered the immediate suspension of Mr. Sanusi from office, saying his tenure had been characterized by various acts of financial recklessness and misconduct inconsistent with the administration’s vision of a Central Bank propelled by the core values of focused economic management, prudence, transparency and financial discipline.

However, many Nigerians believe the CBN governor was axed because he exposed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, as an harbinger of corruption and financial mismanagement, diverting huge federal revenues accruing to the nation from the sale of crude oil.

Mr. Sanusi says as much as $20 billion oil money is missing.

The President, in a statement by Reuben Abati, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, ordered the Central Bank governor to hand over to the most senior Deputy Governor of the bank, Mrs. Alade who will serve as Acting Governor until the conclusion of ongoing investigations into alleged breaches of enabling laws, due process and mandate of  the Central Bank.

Who cares what many Nigerians believe? abegi

  • sirjoka

This is a President fighting anti-corruption instead of fighting corruption.
If not, how long did it take him to suspend Oduah even after several committees including one he setup himself indicted her.
Despite several allegations against Alison Madueke, Eteh, Orurube, and several others did he suspend any? I smell cover up.

  • Mani_Kay

The disgraced, discarded, unfit, unqualified, incompetent, morally decayed, adulterous “emir of kano to be” is Nigerians biggest disappointment since independence.

The man had no idea of what the responsibilities of a CBN Governor are.

How on earth did a rotten character like Sanusi become CBN Governor in Nigeria?

I hope this will not happen again.

    • Martins

Mani_kay, how long did it take for your president Jonathan to sack his madam thief-Stella Oduah? And how long will it take for his to sack his other thieveing madam-Diezani Alison-Madueke? Just answer mani-kay na afam na deri na akpos1.

      • Okikiola Beckley

He didn’t even suspend or sack Oduah.

      • Mani_Kay

Your comment is the greatest insult on this forum and must be deleted by @Premium Times ………. for you to say that the exalted office of the Emir of Kano will at some point in time be occupied by a rotten character like Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is the biggest insult ever on this blog …… your head needs detailed examination.

Did you not see that I put “emir of kano to be” in inverted commas?

        • Yahuza Sani Sagagi

Is the guy as rotten as Jonathan?

Is Jonathan’s presidency not the greatest disappointment on earth?

          How did Jonathan became president.

          • Donald Mbanaso

Nigeria can never be one, divide this nation let every part go there way, no unity no understanding ethnic problem here and they, boko haram the other side.

    • Salvage Naija

No problem. But we have never had this much ‘badluck’ in Nigeria. This Government should just tell us where the missing money is. If you like, call Sanusi a Gigolo, Na Charisma which some lack. Let your paymasters tell us how money just dey fly overnight.

      • Omo Odua

        you mean even Abacha era?

    • Muhammad Rabiu Jr

I just know you are an attension seeker.. I congratulate you for gaining what you want.. But whatever the case WE know SLS is and was the BEST CBN Governor in Nigeria history.. From day one of his tenuer to the very last day no one in Nigeria would say his kobo has been sink in a bank..

If SLS was a disappointment, then Jona is a Calamity.

  • D.A

If there are any true Yorubas in the senate then this man’s nomination must be blocked. We have tolerated the man of Aso rock one time too many. The Yoruba senate members should ensure that they immediately confer with their northern colleagues and block the new designated CBN governor’s nomination. Jonathan has effectively handed all financial positions to the ibos. Now we have the totally ridiculous situation where the heads of AMCON, NAICOM, SEC, NSE, Sovereign Wealth Funds, securities and Investment tribunal, Pencom, Budget office and now CBN is effectively held by one tribe. A group that cannot fight its corner by using full use of its power is a group not worth anything.

The man is the head of a commercial bank. His day to day role his overseeing his banks commercial decision making, ensuring its growth within Nigeria and overseas. He does no macro economic policy thinking, no macro economic foreign exchange policy decision making and its concomitant impact of the Nigerian economy, he does not consider the extent of money supply in the economy and its effects on Nigeria’s economic performance, no interest rate decision making and its macro economic effects on the Nigerian economy and no national banking policy regulatory decision making on a day to day basis. There is absolutely nothing in his present function that qualifies him over and above the current acting CBN governor. Most decent countries recruit the central bank head from within the central bank or from central banks in other countries (US and the UK). His nomination must be blocked.

The current list of people in charge of Nigeria’s financial regulatory space shows ethnic bias at the very highest level.

    Pencom- Chinelo Amazu
Securities and Investment Tribunal – Ngozi Chianakwalam
    DG Budgwet Office- Bright Okogu
    NAICOM-Chibudum Nwuche
    NSE -Oscar Onyeama
    DG SEC – Arunma Oteh
    AMCON- Chike Obi
    Sovereign Wealth Fund- Uche Orji
Minister of Finance and co-ordinating minister for the economy- Iweala

This breach of Federal Character by non-qualified people must now be stopped at the senate level at the earliest.

    • Mani_Kay

Please be informed that Godwin Emefiele the new CBN Governor is not Ibo.

      • Jonas

Criticisms on your comments above by some of the usual disgruntled bigots do not make your comment to be wrong.
I believe you clearly & correctly described the man Sanusi Liar-mido Sanusi .

      • IskaCountryman

and he is not taking over from sanusi whose term would not be renewed…

    • segun akande

brossss! Okonjo is from delta, som of the people listed are not even executive. Sanusi came from a commercial banking background.

      • D.A

        They are all ibo!

        • max

          So what?

        • Statement

          Go and die!

    • item7

      He can as well come from d moon…who cares…let him deliver….useless tribalist…

    • Donald Mbanaso

Nigeria can never be one, divide this nation let every part go there way, no unity no understanding ethnic problem here and they, boko haram the other side.

      • wode

How many division would be so enough to quench your desire? You can have as many as possible, if the right things (e.g. social justice, prudence, accountability etc) are not ensure each division would never know any peace.

So, the issue is not about division, it’s about doing the right thing irrespective whoever is at the helm of affair.

        • Better Life

Shut up, for how long will your justice be applied to your Nigeria system ?.

    • Better Life

    • Sam-G

Point of correction, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Emefiele are NOT Ibos. They are both from Delta State. With respect to a suitable replacement for Mallam Lamido Sanusi, there are two many Nigerian professors of Economics and finance practitioners residing within and outside the country to choose from. The government should think further on this.

  • Adeyemi Adeyemo

Where whoever comes from doesnt really matter. We need performance. Even if we have to get a foreigner as president with good governance, so be it. It seems we no longer trust ourselves in this country. GEJ is bad, PDP is a useless party yet some of us are still castigating the ‘change agents’-APC. If we are waiting for a polotical party with all saints, we may have to wait until when we get to heaven.

  • Mutum

Ko an Kashe BIRI, Biri yayi banna. Mani_Kay and his co travellers should await to see Sanusi’s next appointment.

  • Usman

Ooops Jona, if truly he is guilty of what you listed as your reasons, then, let him go and take appropriate action, don’t be bothered about his court action

  • Salvage Naija

I voted for Ebele Goodluck Jonathan. I expect him to be accountable to me and majority of us who believed in his ‘PHD’. If he likes let him sack anyone that is too good for Nigeria, let him just explain to Nigerians where NNPC money is. When did money start growing wings overnight? Money don become witch for naija. What did Aunty sexy eyeballs do with naija money. A president can only act in such manner when he has a very corrupt and useless Attorney General who fails to advise him accordingly. Sycophants will come and hail incompetence for sake of peanuts whilst they mortgage the future of their children. May God punish anyone supporting corruption in Nigeria.

    • wode

They would concoct something now and present it to Nigerians as the true state of affair and not what SLS is presenting. Then you would see another tabloid on the media that would distract the attention of everybody and that would be the end!

For those people voting based on sympathy, sentiment and other parochial reasons, you can continue doing so. You can be sure that the condition of the country would assume no any other direction than the existing downward trend.

  • max

Jonathan you have my hug! I For say if you are not a true Ijaw man.
If the passport of Sanusi was seized it then therefore means he has serious question to answer before he escape through Niger.#
You can imagine that bumkum ranting that he can’t be removed I thought he would have worn his emir’s regalia, go to work and challenge Jonathan to come and remove him.
Any person who claimed that Jonathan is not doing as he want should wait till he is voted to power. For now Jonathan is the president and commander in chief.

      Did u mean Commander-in-Thief?

  • Aliyu Haidar Amin

    Only in Nija!

  • Excisionist

When his romance with Mrs. Yaro was revealed, he found himself in a tight corner where he could be tried by Sharia law or dismissed for conflict of interest. He was quiet for a while. Then BANG ! The government must be charged with something. Something needed to be invented in order to divert attention. Money is missing. GEJ has stollen
it. Blah, blah, blah. But wait a minute; how much is missing Mallam Sanusi ? Well, he could not come up with one figure. Then meeting after meeting with the opposition. Sanusi’s ranting is one case of smoke without fire. Do not be deceived! It is not about fighting corruption.

It’s all about Mrs Yaro. If Sharia is not just about oppressing the poor, let them take Sanusi and try him for adultery

Sanusi has been a disappointment right from the begining. The only problem with GEJ is that he should have sacked Sanusi long time ago. Sanusi can become the CB governor of the Islamic Arewa Republic after
    the partition
