Celebrate love with these romantic movies

By Efeturi Doghudje

O how we love Valentine; that special day of the year when lovers get creative in expressing how they truly feel about each other. Although some would argue that we should show love every day and not wait for a special day, everyone agrees that love should be celebrated.

Here are five movies that should help make your Valentine’s Day even more romantic.
5. P.S I Love You
Based on the novel by Cecelia Ahern, Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank) is a grieving widow who finds her husband Irishman Gerry (Gerald Butler) radiating love from the afterlife when she discovers that he has left her a series of tasks to be revealed in messages over a period of ten months. The messages are also aimed at helping her overcome her sorrow while gradually making the transition to a new life.
P.S I Love You, the sign off on all Gerry’s letters to his wife, left me all mushy inside. Nothing says I love and care for you more than hand written letters; now a thing of the past. The movie makes one believe that truly, love transcends death. It’s a recommended must-watch for old and new couples.

4. The Vow
The Vow is based on the actual relationship of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, who wrote a book about their marriage. Ten weeks after their wedding on 18 September, 1993, the couple was involved in an auto-mobile accident in which Krickitt suffered a brain trauma, which erased memories of her romance with Kim as well as their marriage. In the make-believe version, Rachel McAdams plays Paige Collins who gets in an accident with her husband Leo played by Channing Tatum. Nothing says true love like enduring patience. All Leo wanted was for his wife to return back to him, love and hold him like she used to; but instead, Paige is appalled that she married him without the consent of her parents and runs back into the arms of her ex fiancée. Eventually, Leo let’s go and tries to move on. The Vow though a trying movie, is a great watch and would be awesome for Valentine’s night.

3. Keeping Faith
In Keeping Faith, Genevieve Nnaji is Nadine, a broken-hearted lady who finds love again with Princewill Sampa (Richard Mofe-Damijo). Determined not to lose Princewill like she lost her ex-boyfriend, Nadine, on the advice of her friends, resorts to juju. There is something special about RMD that makes him so lovable. Aside a charisma that can go on for days, RMD’s Princewill has that persona in the movie that gives one the assurance of eternal love. Nadine’s vulnerability was endearing. This movie is a lovely one to watch with your girl on Valentine.

2. Titanic
A Valentine movie list would not be complete without Titanic. Jack Dawson (Leonardo Di Caprio) is a penniless artist who gambles and wins a ticket on board the Titanic. Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) was the high flying snooty aristocrat. Distraught over an unwanted engagement, Rose considers committing suicide by jumping from the stern of the ship. While hanging there undecided, she meets Jack and the love train starts up. Coupled with the greatest love song of all time – My Heart Will Go On, sung by Celine Dion – Titanic is a captivating and inspirational romantic movie. It shows that one doesn’t need a long time or riches to fall in love. It also points out that love will die for you no matter what. Titanic is a must-see for new couples and old couples entering that cynical stage in their relationship – let Titanic restart the fire.

1. The Notebook
At number one is the “Notebook starring Rachel McAdams (again) as Allie Hamilton and Ryan Gosling as Noah Calhoun. Although it has a similar story line to Titanic – rich girl meets poor guy, rich parents hate poor guy and all that other drama – the Notebook transcends other love stories. It talks about both parties struggle to truly move on and make a life for themselves after their love crashes against the disapproval of Allie’s parents.  But fate and Noah’s architectural skills eventually comes through for the star-crossed lovers. This movie has so much heart and will get even the guys reaching for a tissue.
