Officer asked for “dollars”
The Nigerian Police Force on Monday said it has arrested an officer who was caught on camera demanding bribe from three men in Lagos.
The officer identified as Aniyem Chiyem, a Corporal with service number: F/No. 374171, was attached to Isheri Division, Lagos State Police Command.
The video, which was leaked on social media, showed Mr. Chiyem demanding money in dollars from a Nigerian-American and his two friends. Mr. Chiyem had apparently detained them for alleged traffic related offences.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, in a statement said Mr. Chiyem’s arrest was sequel to a marching order by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, to ensure prompt arrest and investigation of the matter.
Mr. Mba said that Mr. Chiyem, who is currently in police custody, was undergoing Orderly Room trials and if found guilty would face appropriate disciplinary actions.
The spokesperson also said that the IGP had commended the unidentified whistleblower for his efforts in exposing what would have been a hidden crime. He added that Mr. Mohammed enjoined other members of the public to emulate the action, which would certainly go a long way in checkmating crime in the country.
This is the latest in a recent spate of exposed recordings of corrupt police officers, who demand bribe while in uniform and on duty.
