Atiku quits PDP, joins APC

Atiku Abubakar

Find below a press statement personally signed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar announcing his resignation from the ruling People’s Democratic Party to join the opposition All Progressives’ Congress.

AFTER CONSULTATION, IT IS TIME TO MOVE TO APC. LET THE BRIDGE-BUILDING CONTINUE

In 2006, as a result of my firm stand in defence of our constitution and our democracy, my supporters and I were pushed out of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party, a party that we worked tirelessly with other compatriots to build as a vehicle to restore democracy to our country. We later returned to that party in 2009 when a new leadership of the party and the country promised a new direction, a direction of inclusiveness, of internal democracy, of an end to impunity, adherence to the rule of law and respect for the dignity of members and Nigerians.

Sadly, however, those promises have not been kept. In addition, the PDP continues to be beset with many crises, mostly leadership-induced crises. It has since lost touch with Nigerians and efforts made by many well-meaning members and stakeholders to bring it back to the vision of the founders have been rebuffed. To demonstrate the seriousness of the challenges and bring public attention to it I and some other leaders and stakeholders staged a walkout during the party’s last convention in Abuja.

As I speak, most of the issues that led to that walk-out are yet to be addressed. Many founding members of the PDP, I included, continue to be marginalized and excluded from the affairs of the party. For instance as a former Vice President, I am by virtue of the PDP constitution, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees and its National Executive Committee. However, I am not invited to the meetings of those organs nor consulted on their decisions, apparently because I dared to exercise my right to contest in the party’s primary election for a chance to be its flag-bearer in the 2011 elections. We have, therefore, concluded that that party cannot be redeemed. In short the PDP has abandoned Nigerians, the very people who gave it life and many electoral victories.

More worrisome though is the danger posed to the continued existence of this country by this culture of impunity and arbitrariness. We continue to have threats from officially protected political extremists. Increasingly our people are recklessly being divided along the lines of religion, ethnicity and region for political gains. Our history and that of many other countries in Africa and Eastern Europe ought to teach us that this is very dangerous and must stop.

We can and we must do better. Our people deserve better.

It is against this background that we should understand the visit by the leaders of the APC and their invitation to me to join hands with them to save the country. Consequently, I have been consulting my supporters and associates, my family and friends for the past few weeks. My decision may not satisfy some of my friends and associates. In the end, however, I have to put the interest of our country first. This country has done so much for me personally and it deserves all that we can do to help rebuild it and serve our people better.

Following this extensive consultative process, I have, therefore, decided to cast my lot with the APC, a party of change committed to the improvement of the lives of our people and to the continued existence and development of Nigeria as one indivisible country. My resignation letter as a member of the PDP will be delivered to the party tomorrow.

This is the right decision. As in 2006 it is the struggle for democracy and constitutionalism and service to my country and my people that are driving my choice and my decision. Let me emphasize that this is not about me. We have to have a country before people can aspire to lead it, but as it is today we may be losing this country. That is not acceptable.

I encourage my political associates and friends to register and join the APC once the registration exercise commences, so that together we can change this country for the better.

The process of building a nation, of securing and deepening democracy is indeed difficult. And it is not a lineal process. There would be alignment and realignment of political forces. There would be ups and downs and zig-zags, triumphs and challenges. Amidst all that, patriots must remain focused and do what has to be done to save and build the country and serve our people better.

That is what I have decided to do. I will do all within my God-given powers to help the APC win elections all over Nigeria and bring true change to our country and its long-suffering people.

Thank you and God bless Nigeria.

Atiku Abubakar, GCON
(Turaki Adamawa)
Former Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  • Mr. Abdin

The of political journey has began and the poltical of NIGERIA politics has started moving Atiku abubakar is a ma of wisdom and good character who put the interest of Nigeria first before any other thing please come and save the country the level of impunity is so high and you recent decampment to APC is a good decision and a journey that can save Nigeria.

  • Mr. Abdin

Atiku you are welcome to the party of the progressives who can save Nigeria

  • Chukwudi

Welcome Baba. We have been waiting for you. Now the struggle begins. I will see how threats from Lunatics like Asari, and drinkers like Edwin Baboon Clark, will make their local champion win election. No more chance for rigging.

    • Pete

Sorry for you. You are celebrating a serial loser. Atiku himself said PDP was not inviting him for meetings nor acknowledging his existence.

      • sir Oscie

@disqus_WWAmUpCHf7:disqus, HE WAS HIGHLY MARGINALISED IN THE PDP, EVEN AS A FORMER VICE PRESIDENT HE WAS NEVER RECOGNISED OR COMMUNICATED WITH THE HAPPENINGS IN THE PARTY WHICH IS NOT FAIR.
I EVEN APPLAUD HIM FOR STAYING THIS LONG DESPITE ALL ILL TREATMENT FROM THE PARTY’S LEADERSHIP.

  • ogunleye

It’s a new dawn in the politics of Nigeria,I hope to see more progressives joined the APC…….it would be wise for the already defeated PDP not to rig the 2015 election;a word they say is enough for the wise.

    • Okey

So, suddenly, Atiku has become a “progressive” by joining APC?

  • Lanre

Very Interesting. Alh. Atiku fa, what will happen when internal democracy fails in APC? Or let’s put it another way, if APC becomes the majority party, will these same problems in PDP not manifest? Your reference to saving the country is instructive. What are you guys afraid of? How are Nigerians benefiting from the union where you leaders are just stealing money, unashamedly. $16b power fund under Obasanjo, $10.8b, $12b, $49.8b (pick your choice) under Jonathan. Methinks you “guyses” love for Nigeria is shallow. It is all about stealing more money. I think APC is going to be the new tool for that. Finally, Nigeria is negotiable and must be made negotiable. I see Jonathan is playing ostrich with the National Conference not allowing for “the corporate existence of Nigeria to be debated.” Jokes, you all. I am sure the international community would not allow Nigeria to disintegrate violently. 100m people lost at sea is a lot of humanity. Otherwise, this is just boring news.

  • chiboy

    U̶̲̥̅̊ are welcome

  • max

The first resignation letter you wrote is still somewhere in the dust bin of pdp secretariat.
Atiku I can understand your plight first time you were pushed this time you pushed yourself.
I don’t know why pdp refused to allow you a space to operate, to my own opinion you would have left them quietly. When I know that your effort to break pdp would be fruitless is when obj took the job to reconcile the aggrieved G7. Obj knocked you out of the peace process and you were left at the lurch.
I think you have been now disrobed of every ego and have been thoroughly humiliated and humbled. This is the state that Tinubu will like to take you back. You won’t claim of forming APC. You must go by the dictate of Tinubu and since obj is now the chief navigator of APC he can decide to throw you in the ocean in case of turbulence to balance the ship.

  • Afam

The most unstable politician i have ever seeing in Nigeria, what makes him think that after his anti-party affairs in 2007 and 2011 he will be part of BOT and NEC of PDP….Atiku is suffering from born to rule mentality..Go back let Tinubu finish you for the last time..

    • sir Oscie

YOU ARE GETTING IT ALL WRONG, PDP IS BECOMING VERY UNDEMOCRATIC AND THE WILL SURLY SUFFER FOR IT IN THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION.

  • Mani_Kay

NOW WE WILL KNOW WHO IS TRULY THE CONSENSUS CANDIDATE OF THE MUSLIM NORTH

In 2011 Atiku Abubakar was declared as consensus candidate of the Muslim North in a contest that did not include Mohammadu Buhari.

Now that Atiku has joined the APC, we have a chance to know who is truly the consensus candidate of the Muslim North ……. Buhari or Atiku.

Atiku Abubakar in a recent interview carried by @Premium Times: …………. “If you have not forgotten, during the 2011 election, after they said me and General Babangida have lost out, myself, Mallam Adamu Ciroma and General Aliyu Gusau, under the leadership of General Babangida, held a special meeting in which we invited General Buhari, Mallam Ibrahim
Shekarau and Nuhu Ribadu and advised them to form an alliance so that we would help them win election, but they failed to form the alliance, and after they failed, I sent my contribution to General Buhari. So I don’t have any problem with General Buhari at all.”

From Atiku’s statement above, it is clear that his decision to join APC has nothing to do with overall national interest……….. it has more to do with the fact that the born-to-ruin Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani who think that they alone are born-to-rule Nigeria forever are making extremely desparate efforts to return to Aso Rock in 2015 ……. but they are doomed and are failing woefully.

Please recall that Atiku was still in PDP when he was working against the interest of PDP as represented in his statement above. Atiku is truly a shameless man and I agree completely with OBJ that Atiku is a shady, questionable criminal character who cannot travel to the US

    • Aminu Ahmadu

Gentleman, aren’t you tired of this ethnocentric remarks? I mean seriously.

      • Okey

He proved to you that Atiku is driven only by ethnocentric considerations. Disprove him or stop your meaningless chant.

        • Mohammed

Yes he is ethnocetric coming from ethnocentric party, headed by religious bigot GEJ. An Islamic was killed he could not even send his condolence because the scholar was not Christian. In Adamawa, he can only mentioned those killed in church, but kept mute on this killed in Kawuri. I wonder how this man will open his mouth and said he will contest. He will see wonders. His mentallity is not that of a leader, but mere thug’s mentalility, that is why I pity some people like Adamu Mu’azu, Yuguda, and Shekarau. These are people who does not like you and will never like you and your religion, but still follow him. Lets see how you people can come to Baucho and convince us to vote for him.

          • Okey

            So bigoted, just BH mentality.

          • Haza Dole

BH or Arm Robbers with no legitimate fathers … what’s the difference.
You are already history stay or leave Nigeria, nobody cares any more. COWARDS make noice real people take action! You cant divide a country with big mouth, try it the real way if you can … yeye noise!

          • Okey

Any other qualities of a BH left ?

          • Mani_Kay

In the 2011 Presidential election, Buhari received 1,315,209 votes from Bauchi State while Jonathan received 258,404 votes from Bauchi State.

Notwithstanding, Buhari did not win the 2011 Presidential election.

            I hope you get it.

      • Asba

AMINU FORGET ABOUT HIM HE IS A SHALLOW BRAIN. JUST PREOCCUPIED WITH BIAS, SELFISH THINKING. HE IS WORST THEN THE WORST POLITICIAN

  • Boja pikin

GEJ your ambition is killing pdp and all of you are silent you most act before it’s late rigging will not work this time pls know that politics is give and take most of the pdp members have blind confidence in GEJ to stair the ship out of the mocky waters but I have my dougths.

  • UCKhalifa

Everyone that has move on to APC from PDP all seem to have same cliche as to their reason for leaving “after due consultation” question is who were people they consulted with, there immediate constituent or what… And he talked about “bridge building” when did he become JB or RCC, these men should just go and retire cos jungle do mature. I believe the objective of the APC itself is already being defeated with all the movements here and there, this is suppose to be the people’s party but it is no longer looking such. If by end of this year and early next majority of them didn’t get what they want, they farm out again, we can’t just let these set play house around anymore. Enough is Enough

  • Kiliman

Good riddance to bad rubbish…. I dey laugh o! When should we expect you back at O**a enroute Waddata plaza?

  • Uguma Monjok

    The bubble will burst soon

  • Taster

Hope he stays this time around.

  • Atiku is a very smart and knowledgeable politician through and through but like most politicians, cannot be trusted. His antecedents are legendary. I doubt if he could visit the United States of America. You cannot take it from him, he has leadership qualities.

  • paul preston

Atiku will decamp to PDM when the time is ripe, all that he wants is to contest 2015 election he has the right but we in PDP will not begrudge apc Atiku will show thwem the stuff he is made of -confusion

  • Mani_Kay

MARK MY WORDS …..BUHARI WILL BE THE BIGGEST APC CASUALTY

I wrote this comment a few months ago but many at that time dismissed it as something that will never happen ……. Are you still in doubt?

A MUST READ FROM THE ARCHIVES

    RESCUE BUHARI NOW

When Governor Sule Lamido in a recent interview said that Buhari is politically naïve I had thought Governor Sule Lamido was wrong.

But recent developments prove that Governor Sule Lamido was right >>>>> Buhari is indeed too politically naïve and Bola Tinubu is poised to take maximum advantage to the humiliation of Buhari.

Bola Tinubu has been boasting to all his friends that he would politically bury Buhari the same way he buried Obasanjo in the South-West.

The drive to recruit members of the nPDP is part of the plot to weaken and disarm Buhari politically.

This is exactly what Bola Tinubu is doing >>>> Bola Tinubu knows that Buhari’s core supporters and loyalists are in the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States. These are people who listen to Buhari and with whom he went into political alliance with ACN. Buhari is used to them and they are used to Buhari. They give strength and political protection to Buhari.

Bola Tinubu also knows that the only way to weaken Buhari politically is to displace and replace these people that accompanied Buhari into the APC alliance.

While Bola Tinubu has kept his own base in the South-West very much intact, he is out there doing everything possible to destroy Buhari’s political comfort base by recruiting members of the nPDP to displace and replace Buhari’s core supporters.

With Buhari’s core supporters displaced and replaced with nPDP members it means that Buhari will have to start afresh to build relationships with these nPDP members.

This is going to be an uphill task for Buhari because it is a known fact that these nPDP members are strange political bedfellows to Buhari. In fact, most of them are Buhari-hating politicians.

They will never work harmoniously with Buhari >>>> resulting to the scenario whereby Buhari will spend virtually all his energy trying to troubleshoot problems in his native political base.

While Buhari is busy putting out fires in his domain, Bola Tinubu will exploit Buhari’s situation and use the advantage to extend his edge over Buhari as leader of APC. At some point Buhari will get so frustrated and quit.

If Buhari refuses to quit on his own, then Bola Tinubu will use these nPDP politicians he is recruiting to kick Buhari out.

The time to rescue politically naive Buhari is now!!!

    • Bala Abubakar

The only thing that sets free a soul imprisoned by hate is quality education. From your comments overtime, you liking your deposition towards the Hausa/ Fulani like that of the Nazis towards the jews, this trait makes me to contemplate if you are schooled at all. As a Christain, am sure you a bankrupt of what is expected of you. I have read the bible, and you are a disgrace on what the biblevstands for, seriously.

When ever I see your Name, my thought process expects something insulting about the Hausa/Fulani. If you tell me Atiku is a corrupt person only interested in the presidential ticket, I will fly your kite. With remarks from people like you I doubt if we can leave together as a people, there is so much hate in the air.

You forget that the constitution of the Country demands that GEJ needs the votes of this people you have made a trade of abusing, and even if you feel they are inconciqential, that rigging will deliver the votes in GEJ’s favor, you must remember that there is a God who will always frown at illegality.

I suggest you drop all this mask of illiteracy get educated and start arguing with facts and depth. This will certainly broaden your horizon.

  • Baba Jada

I am glad you have left the PDP, and am sure many more will leave. You have no place GEJs religious and tribal politics, and you are not desperate enough to side with politicians who make use of snipers to fulfill their 3rd term ambitions.

  • sir Oscie

  • oghreco

Atiku and most of the Northern political elite must really think the world of themselves. The only reason they are trying to split the PDP is so they can have a chance of returning a Muslim Northerner to the presidency of the country. But Nigerians are wiser now. Here is a man who has shown time and time again, that he does not subscribe to any political ideology. One who is ready to sacrifice the whole country for is inordinate ambition to be President of Nigeria. Gone are the days when the muslim north would arrogate to themselves the power to determine who becomes president of Nigeria. Whether as APC or CPC, these desperate politicians will never hold the levers of power in Nigeria again. We need fresh ideas from people 45years and below, who can turn Nigeria around and put in jail all those who have contributed to ruining the country and recover their loot.
