CHAN objective met, says CAF media officer

CAF says CHAN exposed home-based footballers to international football

The media officer of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, for the Bloemfontein Centre at the ongoing Championship for African Nations, CHAN, Aisha Falode, says the objective of the competition has been achieved.

Ms. Falode said at Bloemfontein, South Africa, on Thursday that after only the third edition, the tournament had exposed home-based African players to international football.

She, therefore, said that CAF’s decision to introduce the tournament was a step in the right direction.

“The goal is to develop and strengthen the leagues in Africa. And, we can see that that goal is being met. Without this competition in place, perhaps all those players from around Africa who had the platform to play on the big stage, such as we had in CHAN, which is similar to the Africa Cup of Nations, where the foreign professionals around Africa will come and play and the domestic players, would not have the chance.

“This was really for them. It was their show and they enjoyed it. Am sure they now see that the platform on which they are performing at international stage is very inviting. And I am sure by the next edition, Nigeria would be hungrier to perform in this competition,” she said.

The media officer said CAF had motivated the various national football federations and associations in Africa with prize money to be used to improve football on the continent.

She said, “We had good quality games and good ambience for football. We had a football family that was really united in terms of delivering the game on behalf of CAF to the rest of Africa.”

Ms. Falode said Ghana and Libya – the two countries that would meet in the final match of the tournament- played their group stage games at the Bloemfontein centre.
