Information Minister plans to run for governor in 2015
The campaign posters bearing the face of Minister for Information, Labaran Maku, have donned the major streets of Lafia, Nasarawa State, in preparation for 2015.
Mr. Maku is seeking to run for governor of the state on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP.
The posters are more conspicuous around a major roundabout in the state capital; located between Makurdi, Doma, Alamis Market Road. However, PREMIUM TIMES observed that Mr. Maku’s posters, unlike those of other aspirants, were not visible on the streets around the Emir’s palace.
The campaign adverts of the incumbent governor, Tanko Al-Makura, who intends to run for a second term, also dominated walls and commercial billboards around Lafia. One Yusuf Agabi who along with Mr. Maku is vying for the governorship ticket on the PDP platform was also making his presence felt via his campaign posters.
Some residents of Lafia who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES complained that the posters were littering the streets and damaging the aesthetic nature of the environment.
“The posters have made our streets dirty. Even at our homes which have nothing to do with political parties, posters are put up. It risks the lives of some of us. Imagine that you are not a politician, and a neighbors of yours who is a politician in a particular political party wakes up and see posters of his or her rival political party posted at your house, what will he think of you,” a Lafia resident, Abubakar Aliyu, said.
Another respondent was, however, of the view that the posters created awareness on the forthcoming elections and who to vote for.
Some residents alleged that the posters are put up at odd hours by political thugs, who are paid stipends by their sponsors or the aspirants themselves.
