Recuperating Senator Abe writes Senate from sick bed, accuses govt of plot to kill him

Rivers state Senator and chieftain of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, Magnus Abe, has written to his colleagues in the Senate, recounting how the police shot him and wounded several others at the venue of a botched January 12 rally in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

In the letter, Mr. Abe pointedly accused unnamed officials of the Nigerian federal government of plotting to kill him. He accused the government officials of having instructed the Rivers State Police Command to eliminate him.

Mr. Abe, who represents Rivers East Senatorial District, gave a blow-by-blow account of the ill-fated rally in the January 17 letter he wrote from a London hospital.

The senator also  said he had already petitioned the Metropolitan Police and human rights organisations in London on the circumstances of his presence in that country and what happened back home in Nigeria.

Mr. Abe was shot at a rally planned by the Save Rivers Movement, SRM, on January 12.

He was treated briefly in a Port Harcourt Hospital before being flown to London where he is currently recuperating.

But in a seven-page letter to the Senate President, David Mark, which he requested should be read to all senators; Mr. Abe insisted that the police abused its powers.

As at January 11, when he got the reminder for the rally which was billed for the next day at the College of Arts and Science, CAS, Port Harcourt, he said the organisers had fully notified the police.

However, he said members of the rival Grassroots Democratic Initiative, GDI, were openly boasting that the rally would not hold in CAS which is located close to the home of its grand patron.

“It was clear to me that using the police to stop a gathering that had been extensively advertised and was to be aired on live television would be an unfair blow to Rivers people and a clear abuse of police power,” Mr. Abe said.

“I decided to reach out to the State commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu and share my concerns with him. The CP refused to pick my calls. I also tried to call the Inspector General of Police to bring the facts to his attention.”

The senator explained that when he could not reach the IG, he called the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to help him reach him (IGP) and Mr. Ekweremadu in turn asked him (Abe) to try and reach Mr. Mark.

After several unsuccessful attempts to reach the Senate President,Mr.  Abe said he called the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Paulinus Igwe, and briefed him on the situation.

Continuing, he wrote, “Senator Paulinus Igwe promised to reach the IGP and get back to me. I also spoke with my Chairman, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Security and National Intelligence, Senator Mohammed Magoro and briefed him.

“My Chairman called back to say that he could not reach the IG but that I should call the Director General of the Department of the State Security service (DGSS). The DGSS is one security official in Nigeria who maintains open lines of communication with all Nigerians irrespective of their political lineage.

“I spoke with the DGSS who promised to call the state command to verify the situation. All this occurred on Saturday, the day before the fateful event.”

Mr. Abe said at about 9.30 a.m on the day of the event, he got a report that the police had invaded and destroyed everything at the rally venue and were firing teargas indiscriminately.

He said he was also informed that men, women and children were running out of churches because the entire area was saturated with teargas.

The lawmaker said he called the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Tony Okocha, and he corroborated the report, noting that Mr. Okocha was holed-up in one Chidi Wihoka’s house within the CAS premises with children, who could barely breathe.

The letter continued, “At this stage I felt it was necessary to go over to CAS to appeal to the police, and try to establish what was going on, and why such extreme force was needed even before the planned time of the event.

“When I arrived at the gate of CAS, I saw the Nigerian Police in full battle formation with armoured personnel carriers and scores of mobile policemen armed to the teeth.”

He listed some of the police officers he met at the venue of the rally to include Mike Uche Chukwuma, one Marcus, ASP Pere, Supol Sani and DPO Esther Effiong, among others.

Mr. Abe noted that he reminded the officers of the contributions of the Rivers State Government to the police and also told them that whatever the situation, it was wrong to fire teargas near churches on Sunday.

“The officers informed me that they were acting on ‘orders from above’ and that I should call the Commissioner of Police or the Inspector General of Police. I was busy trying to call the CP and the IG, when one of the policemen walked close to me and whispered, ‘Oga, leave now, leave now, they said we should take you down.’”

“At this stage, I became apprehensive and reminded the officers that I am a serving senator in Nigeria. In fact, I went close to the senior officer and said, ‘I am following you and if anything happens to me, it will be in your presence and before God.’”

“It was when I was standing with him that the attack began and a teargas canister was shot directly at my feet. He quickly moved away while more teargas canisters were fired directly at me in quick succession. It was at this stage that I was hit by something in my chest. I screamed, ‘I have been shot’ Friends and staff who were with me, realizing what had occurred, rushed me to my vehicle.”

Noticing that he had difficulty breathing as a result of the teargas he inhaled, Mr. Abe said his rescuers stopped at the Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) on Eligbam road.

Inside the church, Mr. Abe noted that some members of the congregation offered him handkerchiefs soaked in kerosene to clean his face to reduce the effect of teargas.

“However the left side of my chest where I was hit was very painful and inflamed. My staff decided that we should rush to the nearest doctor. We were able to reach my doctor, Dr. Mackay Anyanwu, who stabilised me at his clinic and transferred me to the Kesley Harrison Hospital, from where a decision was taken that I proceed to London immediately for further cardiology evaluation.”

Mr. Abe explained that on arrival in London, he was taken to Princess Grace Hospital, where tests were carried out on his heart.

According to him, “My heart repeatedly fluctuated so much so that it triggered the alarms in the hospital and they decided that I should be moved to the Cardiology Unit at the London Bridge Hospital.

“The consultant cardiologist at the London Bridge Hospital determined that the site of impact on the left side of my chest was directly in line of my heart and there was a risk related to the distribution of kinetic energy from the high velocity impact to my chest.”

Mr. Abe appealed to Nigerians to reject the propaganda of the Federal Government’s spin-doctors, who he said were rationalising the attempt on his life as being part of the drama of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

“It is the Federal Government that deployed the Police and gave them orders that I should be taken down. I have heard that the Rivers State CP has alleged that the police were chasing criminals on that day and that I was running from the scene and that I ran into the church to evade arrest,” the lawmaker said.

He insisted that it was only in Nigeria that a serving senator who had not been declared wanted on allegation of any crime could be said to run from the police.

Mr. Abe said he considered Mr. Mbu’s statement that he (Abe) was running away from the police as an insult not only on him but also on the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He wrote, “I have also heard that Mr. Mbu said they have no rubber bullets in the state command. It is clear that Mr. Mbu is talking with the confidence of a Governor General; who knows that nothing will happen, and nothing would have happened even if I were killed.

He referred to pictures of spent cartridges at the scene of the crisis which were captured by Channels Television crew and wondered who shot them since the police claimed they did not use bullets.

“The decision to take my life comes from the highest levels of the Federal Government and nobody will be questioned or punished even if I am killed because I am one of those that have stated and I want to repeat here, that I will cross over to APC on the floor of the Senate,” Mr. Abe said.

He pleaded with the Senate to defend the country’s democracy and protect the lives of Nigerians against gross impunity of the Federal Government.

“It is Senator Abe today. It may be Senator Mark tomorrow,” he wrote.

There was no trace of injury on him neither was there any treatment given to him apart from Antipyretic, an unknown drug”. **”he is in a ward where people with shock are kept, not even emergency ward or wards for people that have bullet wounds”.

The British Health Authorities have expressed their anger with Nigeria Medical Team and officers that examined and signed the result and the Health certificate that enabled Senator Magnus Abe to be flown into the United Kingdom. One of the Health Team member, who saw Senator Abe in the London Bridge Hospital, queried, “what kind of medical practitioners do they have in Nigeria to have issued a health certificate to a man that was not sick or injured?” According to the British Health Autority Team, “there was no trace of injury on him neither was there any treatment given to him apart from a drug called antipyretic (whatever it means).

“The lawmaker is in a ward where people with shock are kept, not even emergency ward or wards for people that have bullet wounds, whether live or rubber”. They wonder why a fake medical result was issued to Senator Abe in other to be allowed into the United Kingdom. Senator Abe was admitted to the London bridge Hospital in the City of London, under a fake name after an inducement fee of £50,000 was claimed to be paid.

Reliable source to Hope For Nigeria, in the Hospital, stated that Abe may be leaving the London Bridge Hospital this weekend to a an undisclosed location.

Bafarawa, Marwa, Shekarau to form New APC —Kwara chapter •May face expulsion as APC NEC meets tomorrow

Written by Taiwo Adisa, Lanre Adewole and Hassan Ibrahim . TRIBUNE TODAY

A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to be known as New APC (nAPC), will soon be launched across the country, the Kwara State chapter of the party has said.

The party, in a statement on Tuesday, declared that like minds in APC in different states of the federation had concluded plan to launch the New APC, to safeguard the ship of the party from sinking.

A statement by the interim state chairman of the party in Kwara State, Reverend Bunmi Olusona, indicated that leaders of the party, including General Mohammed Buba Marwa, Attahiru Bafarawa, Ibrahim Shekarau and Mohammed Dele Belgore, were working to prevent imminent implosion in the party.

Proponents of the faction, however, pleaded with their members in Kwara not to be in a hurry to leave the party.

It stated its plan to launch the New APC would surely bring succour to the members.

“We also warn our members not to participate in any membership registration exercise organised and supervised by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed-led government or agent like Alhaji Lai Mohammed,” the statement read.

It rejected plans by party leaders to cede structures of the party in the states to new entrants, adding that a number of party members were asking the question about the bastardisation of the progressive ideology of the party.

Meanwhile, as the interim National Executive Committee (NEC) of APC meets in Abuja tomorrow over the crisis rocking the party, ranking members contesting party structures in their respective states with sitting governors that defected from PDP may be considered for outright expulsion.

Shekarau, Bafarawa, Marwa and Belgore were the likely heavyweight casualties.

The national leadership of APC said it recognised the defected governors as leaders of the party in their states, a development that the old members of the party had been contesting.

Several peace and reconciliation meetings called by the party leaderships at different levels had failed to resolve the crisis-of-confidence.

It was learnt that the move by the aggrieved leaders to polarise the party by launching a faction to be known as New APC had prompted the national leaders to tackle the growing dissent once and for all, by expelling the disgruntled leaders at its NEC meeting tomorrow.

A senior member of the party told the Nigerian Tribune that the national leadership of the party had hints of the planned polarisation of the party by the disgruntled leaders, long before the plan came into public knowledge and had been preparing for the day they would come into the open with their plan.

Accusing those behind the nAPC as being driven by inordinate ambition, the source disclosed that their plan was to balkanise the party before moving out with their supporters to PDP.
When contacted, APC spokesperson, Lai Mohammed, said the party would rather wait for the move before commenting.

Shekarau, however, said the G5 governors that defected from PDP to APC could not be automatic leaders of the party in their respective states.

This was as he challenged anyone to come forward with any written agreement that conferred leadership on the governors.

On a Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Kaduna Hausa programme, Hanu da yawa, monitored on Tuesday, he insisted that there was nothing like “agreement” with the governors to make them chairmen/leaders of the party in their states.

According to him, there was no meeting where such discussion was reached, while he challenged Honourable Bello Masari to tell the time, date and at what meeting the agreement was reached.

As per the individual choice for the APC’s Vice President, the incumbent Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola has just let the cat out of the bag by informing that the party would prefer either Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State or Adams Oshimohole of Edo State.

Any objective and ardent follower of political events in the country will know that Fashola’s statement is far from mere personal opinion considering his closeness and affinity to the APC National Leader, and godfather, Bola Tinubu.

What all this translates into, is that despite all the hullabaloo, about his new found love and ethnic betrayal by Gov. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi who has arguably and personally bankrolled the APC project, the party may have resolved to dump him in favour of a more marketable candidate

Instead this is what they yearn to publish for the APC sponsored media outfits or misfits-Their usual pepper soup articles from Lai Mohamed aka Abe- described as a liar by a british medical team that examined him-what a shame for journalism in Nigeria

    • bagere2

where did u get your story from? cant you post a link? stop saying things without facts.

  • JI

The reason for the drama is why this letter was written to the senate.

AT first it was air ambulance that flew this man to London before investigation revealed he flew air france.

The same man called every body and their lines never went trough. He was rushed to the church at first before the hospital.

Must democratic governance go down because Amaechi wants to be Vice President which would not happen?

The Senators story line would not even pass the first screening stage for a Nollywwod video consideration.

If the man likes he should defect to the a party in Benin Republic, it does not change the fact that Nigerian politicians are majorly tugs and drop outs whose sense of reasoning does not extend beyond their immediate pockets.

  • Iroro

Your last statement surely stands – it is Abe today, it will be Mark tomorrow.

    Dishonourable senator!

Truly, the man should go resume his work which is majorly budget passing and screening of presidential nominee and not law making!

I am worried by so many developments in this letter: 1. How can a serving Senator have difficulty in reaching the IGP, a public officer? 2. How can a serving Senator have difficulty in reaching the Senate President? 3. Why are the police, paid with public funds, being so partisan as to allow a group of Nigerians to protest and bar another group? 4. Why is the IGP so powerless to call Mbu to order? 5. Why must an overwhelming force be used by the police against unarmed citizens? 6. Where is the outrage of the Senate over the treatment meted out to one of their own? 6. If the shot Senator were a PDP Senator who has not indicated his intention to cross over to the APC, will all concerned (police, Senate, presidency) still be this silent on the attack?

There is the need to check the curriculum for the training of the police in Nigeria, as well as the kind of people who are recruited into the force. Nigeria Police have never changed over the years, and something needs to be done to make them realize that their main duty is the protection of life and property.

As for the IGP, I am sorry for this man. His dismantling of police checkpoints, to me, represents a landmark in his tenure. But the behaviour of the Mbus of this world may just ruin his legacy.

    Just my random thoughts!

    • JI

You want the outrage of the Senate over such disgraceful act that has rubbished Nigeria in the UK?

Was he to be taken down with tear gas? This man is not worth a penny in the store,he is a liar

  • Uzoma

Sorry, didn’t Amaechi’s people say the bullet that hit Abe was intended for Amaechi? So why is Abe now accusing the Fed Govt of plotting to kill him? He should instead accuse them of the mistaking him for Amaechi. Makes a more coherent storyline.

This comedian should have attached a medical report to his letter to substantiate his claim of been shot or is it hit he called it. As much as I condemned the police act of impunity, these politicians shows of shame should also stop. 1st it was a house of assembly member hit on the head that was taken to London now it is a senator probably hit by a tear gas canister in London for treatment.

Why Mark tomorrow, is that a veiled threat that Mark is in the know, very cheeky indeed, infact, it should have been Amaechi instead. From your concorted write up, it is quite obvious that, you were well aware of all what that transpired that day. From your own account you suffered from tear gas smoke and nothing more. Try to be truthful next time

  • Okey

Magnus Abe is play-acting, everyone knows that. In fact, the way his “doctor” spoke on television I got this impression that we now have “political doctors and medicine” as we have sports medicine and doctors. Sure, Magnus will be nominated for Nollywood star prize when the time comes. This Magnus Abe I see here is contesting the 2014 Nollywood Star Prize with Sam Dede and Osuofia and with his performance here, he is a sure bet.

But come off it, the same air-conditioned bed and “clinic” that Chidi Lloyd – that attempted murderer – got “hospitalized” was the same bed and room that Magnus got “hospitalized” before being flown to London where he has gone to cool off and tidy up some real estate purchase

One question then. Where is the first class hospitals that Dele Momodu and Liar Mohammed say Amaechi built and equipped in Rivers State?
