House girl in court for allegedly stealing money, N1 million jewellery

The accused is standing trial for the offence of “theft by servant”.

A 19-year-old domestic help, Blessing Ochigbo, of Mpape, Abuja, on Monday, appeared in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing money and jewellery worth over N1 million from her employer.

The prosecutor, Mohammed Ahmed, told the court that on January 7, Amina Othman, of No. 11, Nun Street, Maitama, Abuja, lodged a report against the accused at the Maitama police station.

He told the court that Ms. Othman had reported that on January 6, she discovered that the accused, entered into her bedroom and stole some of her property.

Mr. Ahmed said that some of the items reported to be stolen included N150,000 cash and different types of jewellery worth over N1 million.

He said that the accused is standing trial for the offence of “theft by servant” in line with the provisions of Section 289 of the Penal Code.

The section stipulates that “Whoever, being a servant commits theft in respect of any property of his employer, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of seven years or with fine or with both”.

After the charges were read to her, the accused pleaded not guilty.

The Senior Magistrate, Chinyere Nwacheonwu, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one reliable surety in like sum who must live within Abuja.

She adjourned the case to February 3 for hearing.
