Bayelsa monarch’s mother, daughter released by kidnappers

Police deny ransom was paid.

The 74-year-old mother of the Paramount Ruler of Agrisaba Community in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa, Ikhiogha Walter, and her 24-year-old granddaughter, Yellow Joseph, have been freed by their abductors.

The details of their release could not be immediately ascertained.

Soon after the victims were released on Sunday, the Council of Chiefs in Agrisaba Community went into a closed door meeting with the woman and her granddaughter.

Family sources said that an undisclosed amount of money was paid as ransom, but the State Police Command spokesperson, Alex Akhigbe, insisted “no ransom was paid.”

Mrs. Walter, the mother to the Obanema of Agrisaba, M.S. Walter Agiri, was kidnapped by gunmen on January 5.

The woman and her granddaughter were reportedly kidnapped at about 6.30 a.m. by gunmen who arrived the community in two gun boats.

Meanwhile, the State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Ezekiel Gbusuewe, a 32-year-old son of a prominent petrol dealer in the state, over alleged kidnapping of the daughter of a former member of the House of Representatives, Clement Eneh.

Mr. Eneh’s daughter was kidnapped on December 26, 2013 and rescued by officials of the anti-kidnapping squad of the Bayelsa Police Command after a shootout with the kidnappers along the Mbiama area of the state capital, Yenagoa.

According to the Police, the kidnappers abandoned a Mazda 323 with registration number Yen 350 SY after the shootout with the police.

A driver’s license was recovered at the scene and the car was registered in the name of one Lucky Odum Albert.

After checks at the license office, it was discovered that one of the suspects is the son of a prominent petroleum dealer in the state, the police said.

Kidnapping has been on the rise in Bayelsa despite a law that punishes kidnapping with the death penalty.
