PDP to APC: Stop balkanising Nigeria

The ruling party accused the opposition party of promoting violence.

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, to stop dividing the country along ethnic and religious lines.

The PDP in a statement by its spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, on Tuesday said the position by an Islamic cleric, Yusuf Garba and the Religious Equity Promotion Council, REPC, has exposed the plot by the APC to balkanize Nigeria along religious lines by imposing an Islamic agenda just like the Egypt Muslim Brotherhood.

The ruling party did not elaborate on what the REPC said or whether the group had any link with the APC and its leaders.

“The PDP wishes to make it manifest to all Nigerians to stand up and resist this evil machination by enemies of our dear country,” the statement said.

PDP said the revelation, which came even from Muslims, goes to vindicate and confirm its earlier stand that “the APC is a party of blood thirsty, religious and ethnic bigots averse to the unity of the country and the peaceful co-existence of our people”.

This, the PDP said, is the reason why the APC has been promoting violence, divisions and blood-letting across Nigeria which are all aimed at making the people lose faith in the Nigerian project and set the ground for massive mayhem, bloodletting and ultimately balkanize the country.

“Nigerians are now no longer at loss on the real reason the APC has been desperate to hold power,” PDP said.

The party said Nigerians now know why the APC has been moving round the country organizing protests and investing heavily in planting seeds of discord and disagreements among the people using their stock-in-trade of propaganda, deceit, falsehood and doomsday prophesies.

APC engages in thuggery

The PDP also said the revelation by the cleric also explains why APC has been arming thugs to disrupt electoral processes.

“A case in point being the importation of hundreds of armed thugs to disrupt the Anambra governorship election last December,” it said.

“But for the police which arrested some of the thugs, the APC would have unleashed mayhem on the state and used it as a test for its larger plan in the 2015 general elections,” they said.

The PDP said genuine Muslims know that Islam stands for peace.

“Therefore, any attempt to use religion to divide the country must be resisted,” it added.

It said Nigeria belongs to everyone irrespective of religious affiliation; and that anyone could aspire for any office.

Mr. Metuh said the PDP remains committed to national unity as encapsulated in its manifesto and the ideals of founding fathers and on that note will resist anything that seeks to balkanize the country and cause divisions among the people.

“The PDP is a party that is built on the principles of freedom, equality, justice and service. In this great party, considerations are not made based on religious, tribal or ethnic interests.

“Here, there are neither Christians nor Muslims; Hausas nor Yorubas; Fulanis nor Ijaws; Igalas nor Igbos and so on.

“The PDP remains a large family with enough room to accommodate all opinions and interests without compromising the national interest,” the statement said.

This is childish. PDP should wake up to the reality and begin to work for Nigerians if it does not want to be drop into the dustbin of history. From this press statement, it looks like PDP wants to use religion and ethnicity to fight the political war with APC. I dont think this will work anymore because Nigerians want the impact of democracy and not the impact of religion or ethnicity.

it´s a big disgrace for PDP to reduce itself so low to the extent of playing religious game all in the name of politics.what a shame.

  • Issei

I think PDP is missing the point, nigerians are wiser,or better still it’s this president that is making major policy statement in a place of worship telling nigerians that it’s the prayer of the Christians cleric that is sustaining Nigeria, shame on you PDP,you think you can win election via introducing religion into our politics,I can assure you nigerians will vote there president on merits and not on sectional intrest in 2015 ,

When did Metuh get this low.this is rubbish. Is it why GEJ has being going from church to church around the fct?
It is very sad that the pdp as led by Jonathan &tukur are beginning to sow the seeds of a bloody religious crisis pre or post 2015 general elections.
Even if they asked metuh to say all, is he so daft not to realize that such statements are capable of causing crisis. He should remember he will have more ‘brothers’ corpses to take back to the east.

Olisa Metuh, please stop making noise. This is the electoral map of President Jonathan for 2015 elections-(i) Concentrate on “christian” votes, (ii) focus on South South because it is my “sweet oil” that “sustains” Nigeria-at least Dokubo_asari also echoes that on behalf of President Jonathan, (iii) look towards South east for more votes, -what do you call that? Unity? You must be kidding Olisa Metuh. President Jonathan and his people started the balkinization long time ago with their slogans (a) amalgamation ends January 2014 and (b) Forward Onto Republic of SS and SE, it is our sweet oil”. Or what do you call a president the consciously sells himself as a “christian” candidate and a South south candidate? Please tell me.

No wonder the President is making policy pronouncements at every Church he goes as if Nigeria is a Christian country.

  • Ide4u

Jonah is an Ijaw president masquerading as Nigerian President

  • Es3

Interestingly enough, APC has been very quite on that issue of those they imported, camped at Imo State and moved to Anambra to rig elections and cause mayhem!

The last I heard on that from them was a lame appeal for the release of those arrested during the ellections at Amanbra State?!

  • Jikandalhayola

Mr. Metuh’s pronouncement is a glaring example of a sinking person trying to grab anything that he thinks will keep him afloat. There is nobody, no matter how highly placed in the society, can use religion this time around to remain in and/or grab power in Nigeria. Majority of Nigerians have now learnt a bitter lesson in a bitterest way. We either divorce ourselves from religious, tribal or ethnic sentiments in our voting patterns or Nigeria remains perpetually backward if, at all, it remains an entity – my personal wish being it remains so, notwithstanding.

Metuh or what is that you called your self. May God send back the evil you are preaching and planting. You should know that Social Media is for the intellect. Here say doesn’t work. Bring facts not lies and sentiments. The line and trend you are using is most DANGEREOUS that NO country ever survive on it. Be careful, if you do not bother about the safety and survival of others including your relatives, you can never be too sure of your own self.
