Nigeria Centenary: NLC tasks government on workers’ welfare

NLC asks politicians to be selfless

The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has called on governments at all levels to improve on the welfare of workers as the country marks the centenary anniversary of its amalgamation.

The Chairman of NLC in Anambra, Patrick Obianyo, made the call in an interview in Awka on Monday.

Mr. Obianyo noted that there was a lot to celebrate in Nigeria’s nationhood in spite of the obvious challenges it faced.

He noted that Nigeria remained a major symbol of the black race in the world and cautioned politicians not to do anything to destabilise the polity.

“Nigeria is a gift to the world and so we must celebrate because a lot has been achieved in population, human and material resources, as well as in socio-economic and political spheres since its amalgamation in 1914. We have our challenges but challenges make a nation and we must protect Nigeria.

“Our leaders and politicians should be sincere and not make their personal and selfish interest override national interest. The Nigerian workers have not had it so good. Governments at all level must continue to dialogue with the organised labour for improved welfare package and good working conditions for a better society,” he said.

The labour leader also lauded the federal government for the revitalisation of existing infrastructure as well as building new ones to suit the ever growing economic activities in the country.
