Party inaugurates an interim executive committee
Ahead of the June governorship election in Ekiti State, the governor, Kayode Fayemi, has charged leaders and members of his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, to work hard to win more members into the party.
He spoke in Ado Ekiti on Monday after the party’s interim Executive Committee for the state was inaugurated by its Vice Chairman, South West, Adeniyi Adebayo.
The five-member Committee is chaired by Olajide Awe. The other members are Abiodun Ogunleye, Secretary; Azeez Awolokun, Treasurer; Nike Olaosebikan, Public Relations Officer; and Dele Falusi, Organising Secretary.
They will serve until congresses are conducted at the ward, local government and state levels to elect substantive executive members.
Mr. Fayemi described the composition of the committee as another critical point in the making of a party formed to rescue Nigerians from a journey without maps and a directionless movement.
He explained that the interim body would guide the Registration Committee, which would be sent from the national secretariat to oversee registration exercise of members in all units, wards and local government areas to be conducted in the next two weeks.
According to the governor, the registration of members was very important to strengthen the party and prepare it for the coming governorship election.
“This is critical because we have election this year, our (Ekiti governorship) election is June 2014 and the earlier this exercise is completed the better for us,” Mr. Fayemi said. “We want it wrapped up before INEC blows the whistle in March which is about 90 days before the election is conducted. We are happy that Ekiti State is the first place where the interim executive has been put in place and this EXCO will take charge of the party pending the time of time we would have congresses at the ward, local government, state levels before he national congress.”
The governor expressed joy that the new mega party had been able to integrate members of the three legacy parties that fused together to form APC. He urged leaders and members to work harder to nurture the party to greater heights.
Mr. Fayemi also disclosed that APC had created unit level in the party constitution to give the party grassroots appeal.
Earlier, Mr. Adebayo, who is also a former governor of Ekiti State, urged the committee to lay solid foundation for registration of members in the state.
While stating that the role of the committee as advisory, Mr. Adebayo charged them to assist the registration committee to be detailed from the national party secretariat to achieve success in its assignment.
