LASU lecturers back, Senate meets next week over resumption

The Lagos university lecturers said they have resumed duties.

The Lagos State University (LASU) Senate will meet next week to design a new academic calendar and fix a date for students to resume studies, an official said on Thursday.

Sola Fosudo, Acting Director, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations Unit, LASU, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone.

“Technically, the school has resumed since the ASUU strike was suspended, but the senate will be meeting to design the timetable and also choose a date for resumption.

“The decision of the senate will be communicated to all as soon as the meeting is held,” he said.

Mr. Fosudo spoke as activities remained low in the university’s Ojo Campus, though lecturers were seen around.

The Chairman of the LASU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Adekunle Idris, said that the lecturers were set to resume teaching.

He said that teaching was the only aspect of the lecturers’ work stopped during their more than five months strike which ended three days ago.

“We are waiting for the senate to meet and amend the school timetable,” he said.

The unionist urged the Federal Government not to breach its agreement with the union to prevent strikes in the future.

“The Federal Government should ensure that the agreement signed is implemented as and when due to avoid future strikes because time lost during strikes can never be regained.

“The goodwill and faith demonstrated by the signing of the agreement should be sustained,” he said.
