Ngige is challenging Willie Obiano’s victory
The Anambra State Governorship Election Tribunal has granted an order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to allow the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chris Ngige, access to all documents used for the conduct of the recent governorship elections in the state, for inspection and photocopying.
The Chairman of the Tribunal, J.K Kaigama, gave the order during the Tribunal’s sitting in Awka on Friday.
The documents Mr. Ngige was granted access to include the voters’ registers, result sheets, Form EC 17-Oath of Neutrality by INEC staff, used and unused ballot papers.
The list of all ad-hoc and permanent staff used for the elections, staff payment vouchers for the settlement of allowances of the ad-hoc staff would also be inspected by the candidate.
The judge said Mr. Ngige should be allowed to undertake the exercise urgently to enable him move expeditiously on the matter.
The governorship elections were held on November 16, 17 and 30 after which the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Willie Obiano, was declared winner by INEC.
Mr. Obiano polled 180,178 votes to beat Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who polled 97,700; while Mr. Ngige came third with 95,963. The Labour Party candidate, Ifeanyi Ubah, came fourth with 37, 495 votes.
The APC candidate had filed the petition on Tuesday requesting the Tribunal to allow him inspect materials used for the election. The exparte motion was filed by his brother, Emeka Ngige, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN.
