The visit it a follow-up to discussions between Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Barack Obama.
The United States Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, is expected in Nigeria on a working visit that would also take her to Kenya between December 2 and 13.
Ms. Thomas-Greenfield would be accompanied on the visit to Nigeria by other members of the U.S. government, including representatives from AFRICOM, the U.S. Department of Defense, and USAID.
According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, the Assistant Secretary would meet with senior Nigerian government officials, to follow up on President Obama’s meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan in September during the UN General Assembly.
During the visit, Ms. Thomas-Greenfield is scheduled to travel to other parts of Nigeria, including Lagos, to meet with a cross-section of Nigerians, including government officials, members of the business community and civil society representatives to continue to build the U.S.-Nigeria partnership.
While in Kenya, she would join the United States’ delegation attending the Golden Jubilee celebrations as the country marks her 50th anniversary of independence. The visit would also focus on furthering the important relationship between the United States and Kenya on democracy, economic prosperity, and security.
