Why we will not lobby Lamido, Amaechi, others – PDM

The party’s chairman explained why PDM members left PDP

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM, Bashir Yusuf, has said that the party would not lobby the seven aggrieved governors of the Kawu Baraje faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to join it.

The governors are Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa).

They, alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, floated the “New PDP” last August 31, with Mr. Baraje as National Chairman and Olagunsoye Oyinlola as National Secretary.

The governors are currently engaged in discussions with President Goodluck Jonathan and other governors belonging to the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP, aimed at resolving their differences. Another meeting of both groups will hold after the Sallah holidays.

Mr Yusuf, who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES in Abuja, said it was the responsibility of the governors to identify the groups they wanted to belong to and the strategy they would adopt in doing so; and not the responsibility of PDM, which, he confirmed, was still engaged in membership drive.

“Our position is that this is a matter that affects them more than it affects us; they are therefore the ones in a position to declare publicly what their strategy is or who they are meeting with,” he said.

“So I don’t want to be the one providing information on their behalf. I will suggest that if you have any opportunity to speak with them, you should ask them those questions. It is their project. We are building our party; they are the ones who have a road map of where they want to go.”

The PDM chairman refused to confirm explicitly if Mr. Lamido- who was a member of the PDM when it was founded as a political association by the late Chief of staff, Supreme Headquarters, Shehu Yar’Adua in the 80s- had commenced discussions with the party leadership.

According to him, “You have made two very profound statements; one, that you Know Sule Lamido, and then two, that he naturally belongs here. Those two things you said are quite profound.

“I don’t know the basis of your knowledge and I don’t know how you define nature by saying that he naturally belongs here, but I am also not in a position to say that is the case or that is not the case. I take that to be a statement from you in good faith. I therefore, take it with all the implications of the case in good faith.”

Mr Yusuf explained that he and other members of the PDP broke away from the ruling party because they struggled unsuccessfully in the last ten years to restore the lost values on which the ruling party was founded.

He noted that they failed in their bid to do so because the PDP had evolved into a party that refused to listen to anyone except the person in charge.

“It is either the president say so or it’s nothing,” the PDM national chairman lamented.

“Having fought, with all the bruises we had to show for the fight and realizing that it was a futile one, we decided to pull out of the PDP and register our own political party on the basis of those values that made us to be part of the PDP.

“That is the main reason why we pullef out of the PDP. It is a difference in values and ideology.”
