Governor Gabriel Suswam had ordered the lecturers to resume work.
The lecturers of the Benue State University (BSU) have insisted on continuing with the ongoing nationwide strike by university lecturers. They, however, maintained that their continued participation in the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was not an affront on Governor Gabriel Suswam.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Makurdi, the BSU branch chairman of ASUU, Samuel Ikoni, said their continued participation in the strike was for the interest of the university. “This university had already benefited from the 950 million shared among universities for the development of infrastructure.
“If we did not participate in the strike, we will not receive the grants and neither the state government nor any donor agency has ever given such money to the university for the development of infrastructure,’’ he said. He therefore called for the understanding of the governor in the continued involvement of the university’s lecturers in the strike.
Mr. Ikoni called on the governor to work towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis in the overall interest of the education sector, the students and the nation at large. Mr. Suswam had ordered the lecturers to return to work or risk the stoppage of their salaries. ASUU had embarked on the strike over three months ago to press for the implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the government.
The agreement included several issues including proper funding of universities.
