The faction also extols Agagu’s virtues.
The national leadership of the “New” Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday, criticized the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, for meddling in political crises rather than channeling its energy towards improving the country’s security situation.
The party stated this in a statement congratulating Ignatius Kattey, an archbishop and Dean of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria, and Mike Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, on their freedom from kidnappers’ dens.
The statement was signed by the faction’s spokesperson, Chukwuemeka Eze.
The New PDP also described as “a national calamity” the death of a Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Agagu.
“The party thanks Almighty God that these two illustrious Nigerians came out of the kidnappers’ den unhurt and prays that God give them the strength to cope with the psychological trauma arising from their harrowing experience,” the party said.
“PDP wishes to appeal to the Nigerian Police, which has unfortunately allowed itself to become distracted by politics to the detriment of its constitutional duties, to immediately retrace its steps and redirect its energies towards improving the precarious security situation in the country instead of being preoccupied with witch-hunting perceived opponents of President Goodluck Jonathan and Alhaji Bamanga Tukur’s faction of the PDP.
“The Police under the watch of Mohammed D. Abubakar, which has illegally sealed our offices while leaving millions of Nigerians at the mercy of kidnappers and other common criminals, is playing with fire. The earlier it stops doing so, the better for everyone.”
Mr. Eze lamented that the people of Ondo State in particular and Nigerians in general, had been robbed by the death of Mr Agagu, who it described as a patriot and a statesman.
It recalled that apart from serving as governor of the South Western state, Mr Agagu discharged his duties meritoriously as aviation minister.
“PDP extended its condolences to Dr. Agagu’s immediate family, to the good people of Ondo State, to the PDP family and to Nigerians in general,” the party said.
