The police have released the names of seven of the victims.
The shooter that caused the death of 12 people in a Washington Navy Yard has been identified as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis.
Mr. Alexis has been identified as a former Navy reservist with a “pattern of misconduct,” the CNN reports.
At least eight people were also injured n the random shooting by the suspect. Mr. Alexis was killed after an encounter with security officials, authorities said.
The police have also released the names of seven of the 12 that were killed while those of the other five would be released after their families have been contacted.
The seven whose names were released are Michael Arnold, 59; Sylvia Frasier, 53; Kathy Gaarde, 62; John Roger Johnson, 73; Frank Kohler, 50; Kenneth Bernard Proctor, 46; and Vishnu Pandit, 61. All the seven released names are non-military personnel.
The police in Washington, however, said only one person, Mr. Alexis, was involved in the shooting that has been condemned by President Barrack Obama.
Mr. Obama called the shooting a “cowardly act” targeted at both military and civilians serving America.
“They know the dangers of serving abroad,” he said, “but today they faced the unimaginable violence that we wouldn’t have expected here at home.”
