The accused pleaded not guilty.
A marine policeman, Boma Pepple, 30, on Friday appeared before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, charged with manslaughter.
The police prosecutor, George Nwosu, told the court that the offence was committed on July21, 2012, at about noon at Makoko Water Front in Yaba, Lagos.
He said that on that day, the accused was on duty, guarding a marine boat, when the deceased, one Timothy Humpoyanwa, jumped aboard and wanted to collect a gun from the accused.
“The accused struggled with the deceased but unfortunately the gun hit the deceased’s stomach which led to his death.”
Mr. Nwosu said that the accused was arrested by his colleague and had been in police custody for over a year.
According to him, the offence contravenes Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Olatunbosun Abolarinwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
He adjourned the case to July 25 for further hearing.
