Why Aso Rock Bodyguard Blocked Amaechi From President Jonathan — Presidency

President Goodluck Jonathan

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers was blocked by presidential bodyguards from exchanging pleasantries with President Goodluck Jonathan at a dinner hosted by the president on Wednesday night to avert a possible breach of security, the Special Adviser to the president on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, has said.

The Punch newspaper quoted Mr. Gulak as saying the President arrived the event before the governor and was already seated before Mr. Amaechi and his entourage arrived and that it was a breach of protocols for the Rivers governor to approach  the president after arriving late.

He suggested that the bodyguards only did their job, which is to protect the president and other officials at the event.

Mr. Gulak was responding to comments by the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria, which criticized the president over the incident.

The paper quoted Mr. Gulak  as saying,  “The President has a good relationship with all state governors and he meets with them regularly. The case in point is a pure security issue and it should be treated as a security issue that should not be politicised.

“The question the ACN and others who may want to politicise this issue need to ask is whether the President arrived at the venue of the dinner and was already seated before the governor arrived.

“Usual practice across the world is that once the President arrives a place, nobody whether a governor or not, is allowed entrance. That is the protocol. Even(Barack)  Obama  of the United States cannot be on his seat and a governor will be allowed to come in.

“If that was the situation in this case that the President was already on his seat,  it would have been a breach of protocol and security for any security person to allow the governor access to the President. Such a security person would have been sanctioned if he had done that.”

The ACN, had in a statement by its spokesperson, Lai Mohammed, berated President Jonathan over the incident, and called for a probe.

Mr. Mohammed said, “We are making this call because we do not believe that, in spite of the reported frosty relations between the two, President Jonathan – as the father of the nation – will lend the weight of his high office to such a demeaning action as exhibited by the presidential security personnel.

“To believe that anyone occupying the esteemed office of the President of one of Africa’s most important nations will be a party to a situation in which any security aide will wilfully fence a state chief executive from paying his respect to the President at such an open gathering will be to think the worst of the occupier of that office.

“That is why we have chosen not to believe that this indeed occurred, and why we are calling on Mr. President to tell Nigerians that ‘it ain’t so’ “We shudder to think of what efforts are being made – including the use of national institutions – to undermine Gov. Amaechi if the treatment reportedly meted out to him at the dinner has the approval of the powers that be. We are even more worried at what will happen to a governor from the opposition who falls out of favour with the President, if a governor from the same party as the President can be so publicly humiliated.”

A presidential bodyguard had on Wednesday night stopped Mr.  Amaechi, from getting close to President Jonathan to pay homage.

Mr. Amaechi, who is the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), and his loyalists arrived the venue when the event was already in progress.

They came in from the Rivers Governor’s lodge where they met earlier for about 15 minutes and then adjourned to honour the President’s invitation.

On his entourage were Governors Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun); Adams Oshiomole (Edo); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Rabiu Kwankwanso (Kano); Abdulazeez Kyari-(Zamfara); Muritala Nyako (Adamawa) and Magartakada Wamakko (Sokoto).

Governor Amaechi, after settling down, got up and made his way towards where President Jonathan was seated in company of Presidents Joyce Banda of Malawi and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, apparently to pay homage.

However, the bodyguard blocked the governor from meeting the President. The Governor resisted for a while but had to return to his seat when it was glaring the bodyguard won’t allow him.

The Rivers Governor has in the past months been ostracized by the presidency and his party, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, a development usually blamed  on the suspicion that Mr. Amaechi was positioning himself for a vice-presidential slot in the 2015 election.

Already, the governor has been suspended from the PDP after he won reelection as chairman of the NGF, despite opposition from his party and the presidency.

Federal aviation authorities have also grounded an aircraft belonging to his state, claiming its importation papers were not in order. The state government has denied the allegation.

Mani_kay, perhaps the question is: in view of Goodluck Jonathan’s backing of Jonah Jang -who lost a democratic election in NGF but who continues to rape Nigerian democracy brazenly by calling himself the “chairman” of NGF, and Gov Amaechi who was duly elected as Chairman of NGF but has kept his cool inspite of the rape of democracy and provocations from Jang, Goodluck Jonathan Jang’s backer and PDP- who is the TRAITOR to NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY BETWEEN GOV AMAECHI AND GOODLUCK JONATHAN. And on the side, you may call Amaechi a “traitor” because you are thinking in tribal terms-that is you Mani Kay is thinking that Amaechi a ‘south-south” “betrays” the dubious calculations of Goodluck Jonathan a fellow “south-south”. that is how ridiculous, tribalistic and unpatriotic your position is. Here we Nigerian citizens are talking about the fate of Nigerian democracy as Nigerian citizens, you mani-kay are talking of some local “south” thing. You can go on thinking village, thinking like a hut inhabitant. We Nigerian citizens will think Nigerian and save it.

mani_kay_na_afam_na_mpitikwelu_na_deri_asari_na_Kingsley Kuku_na_Jonathan, Sorry I did not get your point: Did you mean Gov Amaechi is a “traitor” because Goodluck Jonathan has an undemocratic plan in NGF to impose Jonah Jang and use the NGF as one of his numerous platforms for his 2015 re-election bid and Gov Amaechi is “traitorous” to that Goodluck Jonathan undemocratic plan? I just need a clarification. Thanks.

  • Frank

When Gov Tinibu opposed certain undemocratic and anti-people policies of the then president OBJ,some gullible Nigerians said he was fighting the president,he wants to VP to Atiku,he’s a traitor of the South west, today put Tinubu’s relevance in today’s Nigerian politics with that of OBJ your judgement is as good as mine, today there’s a repetition of the same scenario with Gov Ameachi and Jonathan starring this time,I do not have any doubt the result would be same, time would tell.

    • armrod

Why didn’t you tell us that Atiku is now relevance in Nigeria politics. Tinubu and OBJ are from different political parties and so their political difference is understandable.
Again Tinubu is already a political leader and was rewarded by Yorubas as such. The yorubas political dynamics tends to favour Tinubu than OBJ. The later is not loved within yoruba geopolitical space unless when it come to Nigeria politics yorubas will found it convenient to go into alliance with OBJ.
Tinubu therefore remain relevance to yoruba people and as a political leader he is also known in Nigeria.
In the case of Amaechi nobody knows what he is fighting for and to whom he is fighting it for. He appears to be fighting aimlessly and for that he is not enjoying the support of his people unlike Tinubu. Amaechi cannot claim to be the political leader of Rivers state talk less of south south.
Unlike OBJ the people of south south have high regard for Jonathan and appears to support him and they view Amaechi’s recent political activities as injurious to their political aspiration.
Tinubu enjoys a massive political base than Amaechi, I will rather compares Amaechi to Atiku instead of Tinubu

      • Frank

Ameachi is not the leader of Rivers politics and he controls 27 of the 32 house of assembly members?Jonathan is loved in the SS,yet with all the free oil money looted he has only 5 members including his inlaw to show for all the love?armrod,Deri,peter2000’s love for GEJ those not translate to a SS love for a man who believes SS means Ijaw people only,it is so called SS love that is deceiving you guys to dance naked in the market square,it’s an illusion,if you doubt me impeach Rotimi let’s see, that’s would be the 1st major test on who SS love between the duo.

        • armrod

Needless for you to abuse anybody son!

Amaechi technically has no party now and is not in control of any political machinery. Yes he is the head of government of River state and when it comes to put to test how many house members are loyal to him it is then that you will know that he is alone.

Look at Wamakko he was suspended and his state’s party excos declared loyalty to him and vow not to obey the suspension handed over to their governor. On the day of Wamakko’s arrival from abroad all the political leaders in his state declared their loyalty to him, that loud statement helped to recall him back. That shows a political leader who is in total control of his state.

But Amaechi was suspended and his state PDP exco honoured it and has been harassed on daily basis by police commissioner being controlled by Nyesom Wike.

There was a massive rally where rivers people marched to state house to demand for his resignation. Recently Nyesom Wike declared that he is the acting leader in his state, who made such comment in Sokoto?
Instead of Amaechi being in control he is busy complaining going to one press house to another. He does not move freely in PH while Nyesom is in total charge of the state. Just recently the wife of mr president was around and Amaechi was locked up in state house and you tell me that such a person is the political Leader of River state because he has 27 house members loyal to him. what of the rest of millions of River state people?

          • Frank

“Just recently the wife of mr president was around and Ameachi was locked up in state house” is that the kind politics you celebrate?so you are saying the First Lady is a rascal or at best acted as one?unfortunately you paint the people you claim to love in such a bad light,I do not believe what you said here actually happened while Dame was in PH,now concerning Rivers people and their loyalty, why is the FG so afraid that it has ordered the CP to ban protest in Rivers?comparing Wamako’s PDP with Oduah’s PDP exco is like expecting a corrupt teacher to fail his child in an expensive school,Ameachi is going round press houses, yes he did same in 2007 and the Supreme Court heard him, this one would definitely be heard too, already your camp seems like it’s running out of fuel,it would soon fizzle out.

          • armrod

Look I can confirm to you that the court will declare his suspension illegal just like they did during Atiku’s case. But where is Atiku now, how did the judgement in his favour helped his political life.

Let me properly inform you that Amaechi ran away to Ghana after the 2007 election. He was locked up in one room there before he was flew to London and was kept there under the care of Mr Simon Ichendu.
The problem he is having now in the state, is because those who fought that fight while he ran away, especially Nyesom Wike is the same people who have wrested the power out from him. He has no political structure in Rivers state, let me remind you that Nyesom Wike who is trashing him today was the campaign chairman during Amaechi’s second tenure and use his political machinery to bring Amaechi back. Come to Port harcourt and ask why Nyesom is that powerful.
Amaechi like to make noise because Jonathan is such a simple man, who has already declared that he does not have an enemy to fight. My brother stubbornness is not a virtue. Amaechi is gone, unless he is been adopted in Ekiti state to become their senator if not after his tenure it will be straight to kirikiri let him go and ask Sylva Timipriye how far?

          • Frank

The funniest political permutation I’ve heard in recent time,Ameachi was locked in a room in Ghana,by Ghananian security agency or who?anyway he still came out to become Governor of our Rivers state,he’ll be there for 8yrs unmoved,if you where a student of history, then you should know that each time the man is locked up,he comes out to be elevated, Wike has a task of becoming Governor of Rivers in 2015,let’s see how his illusion becomes a reality, stubbornness I agree is not a virtue, because it usually goes with pride and foolishness, but a leader must be resolute, with strenght of character and will power,Wike and co are the ones making noise with 5 legislators, how ridiculous one would declare himself as a political leader of a state with such an insignificant minority, very laughable,is Sylva in Kirikiri or his comfort house in Asokoro?though I’ll never stand up in defense of any corrupt politician like Sylva, but civilian dictatorship is unwelcome, time would tell who wins and by how much.

  • Joe Ogbodu

This Ameachi issue is too trivial to remain in the front burner. What’s this that the presidency is reacting about? “Why Aso Rock Bodyguard Blocked Ameachi…” is that an issue? Though I blame the presidency for the heated situation of things. They react to too many things at a time. Okupe, Abati, Gulak and the rest should learn to identify issues of national discourse and react appropriately and stop dragging the presidency to the mud. If the presidency led by GEJ must react it should be issues of nation concern. They should react to nation conversation. That’s the only way the presidency would gain its respect and accord. That Ameachi’s security for instance stop local council chairman or commissioners from shaking hands with the governor when the governor is seated with other governors from the West is not a matter at all. That’s purely a security issue so Ameachi and the media are the ones creating all this troubles. The media are just picking issues out of this Ameachi case to sell their papers and antagonise the presidency while our presidential aides are there running their mouths to be seen as working while the rest of us are reacting to all the media creation according to how we see GEJ administration. I would advice GEJ to face his work and stop being distracted by reacting unnecessarily. Let Ameachi seek redress in the law court and let the nation be. Ameachi and Jang should sought themselves out in court since they were unable to do that as reasonable elders. I rest my case!

    • Nigerian

I support ur advice, a respondsible and working Government should be proactive in serious National issues not bedroom and gossips.
The moment anything is said against GEJ it becomes National thing but anything aagainst Citizens of Nigeria is not an issue why? Is GEJ the only Nigerian?
Abati, Okupe, Gulak pls answer us.
Does the constitution state that one you become president you are now god over your people, that people don’t have the right to question your actions?
Did we vote you or were you imposed on Nigerians?
Definitly you were imposed on Nigerians that is why your advisers react on your personal issues than the Nigerians issues.
We are in a sorry situation.

    • domnze

Joe, you hit the nail on the head. That is what happens when you hire so many people to do the same job – Abati, OKupe, Gulak etc. They what to be seen to be busy to remain relevant. In the same vein the ACN mouthpiece should also go and learn a few things about protocol. Has anyone asked why some governors would want to come to an event after the president is seated and still want to advertise themselves. This is about the institution called the presidency in the constitution and not about the person of the present occupant or that of any person else be he or she a governor or something. Why are so many Nigerians exposing their shallowness so often? When politicians have no programme to sell to the people, either because they feel the people don’t matter or they have no programme to sell, they resort to making noise about every little thing. What, for goodness sake, is NGF, a social club, compared to the myriad of problems afflicting the country?

I think media are the people fueling this matter, this is security issue and has nothing with Amaechi but my question is this why is ACN./APC defending Amaechi? Is lai mohammed asleep when Tinubu undemocraticaly put up his daughter for the president of people? have they advised their Emperor Tinubu whose actions will bring down any democratic action in APC because for him ,he don’t believe in internal democracy…APC should first remove the log in their eyes.

Are u a trader?how does it concern u,why are u crying more than the bereaved?the market women says they are happy with choice, have heard another group breaking out as a result to declare their own leader?if it is in their blood to run and manage the market men and women well, then what is your beef?Tinubu’s mum ran the association all her life,no issues, now her grand daughter has taken over to continue the good works and u are in Ariaria making noise.

  • Joseph Ejechi

I think there is no need to west our energy on this issue of Governor Amaechi exchanging pleasantries with the President. The Gov from report arrived the banquet hall late. What he ought to have done is to peacefully and quietly move to his chair and sit down quietly. It would have been different if he had arrived the venue and while the President is exchanging pleasantries with other, the governor was debar. Then anybody can speak against the presidency for act of condescending. The presidential guards were just doing their job.

I don’t think it is really healthy for our politicians to read meaning into whatever movement the presidency makes. It is not because of the personality of Pres. Jonathan I am expressing this opinion but because of the office of the president. Whether we like it or not, the symbol of our collective sovereignty is the President. The office should be revered. We should come to the realization that authority is authority no matter who it has been trusted upon to exercise.

The AC/APC spokes person is only doing what he ought to do as opposition, though some of his politicking appears to unsavory. In the new political reality that is presently been defined consequent upon the merger of key opposition parties into one mega opposition, the opposition has to show resilience by tackling the rule party on real issues, in order to buy in to the people deeper and deeper.

  • muhammad

Gulak should keep quiet. Did the President and Dame not go to Port Harcourt together for a wedding ? Gulak did not deem it fit to acknowledge the breach in protocol and security , where both GEJ AND PATIENCE were attending the same event but Dame Patience arrived the venue before her husband!!!! How about all the times Patience walks in front of GEJ at events ?
Please we are tired of this selective treatment and flimsy excuses
