Maitama Sule dissociates self from Akwa Ibom summit

The northern leader said he was not consulted on the summit.

The convener of the Northern Elders Forum, Maitama Sule, has dissociated himself from a meeting of leaders of thought of the six geo political zones of Nigeria, to be held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, next week.

A statement from the secretariat of NEF and signed by its spokesperson, Ango Abdullahi, on Thursday said the Dan Masanin Kano is unaware of the summit being organised by the Akwa Ibom Summit of the Project Nigeria-National Consensus Group.

The statement said NEF is “particularly concerned that the group is parading the name of the Danmasanin Kano, Dr Yusuf Maitama Sule, convener of the Northern Elders Forum, as one of the leaders of delegations that will spearhead discussions at the purported confab, and even portraying him as one of the conveners of the summit.”

“We are concerned because first, the Danmasanin Kano is not only unaware of such confab but was at no time even intimated about it neither is he a party to its organisation nor has he ever endorsed any invitation to anybody to that effect,” the statement said.

Private discussion

The statement also said Mr. Sule had five months ago held a meeting with Professor Ben Nwabuize in Lagos where national issues were discussed including a similar issue brought up by Mr. Nwabueze and which the Danmasani saw as noble.

It added, however, that since then, “neither Professor Nwabuize nor any other person had contacted him by whatever means on the issue or any related matter that might have given rise to the announcement of the purported Akwa Ibom summit.

On his part, he also said he had not mentioned the issue or any similar matter to anyone nor discussed it with any northern elder or group.

“More importantly, the Danmasani believes that if a summit of such magnitude were to be arranged, it should be more properly scheduled for the Federal Capital, Abuja and not in Akwa Ibom to give it a certain political undertone” the statement added.

I am out

Mr. Sule has, therefore, pulled out of the summit.

“The Danmasani hereby categorically distances himself from the organization of the Akwa Ibom summit and dissociates himself from its conduct and eventual outcome.

“The Danmasani also frowns at the use of his name as signatory to the invitations being circulated for the said confab” it said.

This Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani people who are obviously on their way out of Nigeria can never cease to expose their unthinking, uninformed and uneducated mind to the world. First and foremost this man called Maitama Sule is too old and has been reported in recent times as too sick to travel. I am convinced that this meeting is a follow up to previous meetings which he attended and for which the minutes of such meetings would have indicated that there would be further discussions from time to time as need arises. So, I wonder why he is expecting a special invitation and clearance from Ango Abdulahi’s Boko Haram. What is wrong with holding the meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Is Uyo not part of Nigeria? Or is he afraid of seeing the oil spillages and the devastation of oil exploration on Akwa Ibom State? Yet this same man said nothing when Boko Haram suggested that they can only talk with Nigerian Government only in another Middle East Country. Why did Maitama Sule not condemn Boko Haram and urge that talks be held at Abuja. Why are the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani so afraid of frank discussions on the future of Nigeria. They cannot hold on for too long; they will surely be kicked out of Nigeria. Long live Major Gideon Gwaza Orka.

If you cannot be a democrat in Nigeria that contains hausa-fulani who disagree with you on choice of leadership, you cannot be a democrat even if your house becomes your nation.

    • Joseph Ejechi

Ajantala, you should be aware now that public figures whether blurred or truly in the limelight of public glare are always ambivalent. They have private and public faces. They display either at the most convenience to them. when the situation doesn’t suit them they turn to the more convenient.

Denial is a fact of life for such people and when it matters most they recoil into their rusty shells only to resurface when the tide is in their favour. To be out when you had said you were not in ab initio is to confirm you were in but decided to be out because interests were not well served as expected. But I don’t think Danmasanin Kano having received so much from Nigeria will not want to give back to Nigeria. It it is sinful for him to withhold.
