Lagos judge brutalised court clerk, turned him to domestic help, family claims

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia

The family say the judge turned the court clerk to a domestic help.

The family of Israel Okodugha has petitioned the Federal High Court, Lagos, after a judge allegedly bloodied the clerical officer.

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, last month, allegedly threw caution to the wind and came down hard on the clerk who is attached to her office.

The incident went unreported due to insufficient proof to back up the claims.

But a copy of the petition by S.O Okodugha, the clerk’s father, stated that the victim had gone to Mrs. Ofili-Ajumogobia’s Chambers at about 4:15 p.m. to inform her that he was going home when the incident occurred.

The petition was sent to both the Chief Registrar and Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court as well as the most senior judge in the Lagos division of Federal High Court, James Tsoho.

“Sometime in the month of May 2013, at about 4:15pm, according to him, he (Israel) entered the Chambers to inform his lordship that he wished to accompany the staff bus home since the money on him will not be sufficient to carry him home that evening to Ikorodu by public transport,” read the petition.

“In the presence of female students, his Lordship got up from the seat, went to Israel, grab his ears with her nails, pulled on them, in the process, inflicted pains on the ears and wound on the back of his left ear.

“He bled on the ear to the house that night. We have to take him to a nearby pharmacy to give him analgesics after washing the wound with antiseptics,” the elder Okodugha stated in the petition dated June 11.

The clerk’s father also alleged that the judge had turned his son into her house help, performing house chores at her home during official hours.

“Before the incident, our son Israel, has been one of the staff his Lordship uses as house keeper to scrub the toilet, wash the clothes and sweep and clean the house during official hours and even on weekends under instructions until Israel told his Lordship that he had studies he had to attend on weekends,” he said.
