Five Unilag students for South African conference

The conference will hold from October 2 to 5.

Five students of the University of Lagos will fly the institution’s flag at the 2013 One Young World Conference in South Africa in October.

This is contained in a statement signed by the University’s Deputy Registrar (Information), Toyin Adebule, on Friday in Lagos.

According to the statement, the students emerged the best participants in a competition organised by a Non-Governmental Organisation, Impact Your World Leadership Initiative.

The statement said that the chairman of the organisation, Akin Odumakin, would fund the students’ trip. It said that the conference would hold in Johannesburg, South Africa, from October 2 to October 5.

The conference would discuss, among other things, the role of business in society, transparency in business and government, the impact of climate change, global health and hunger relief.

It listed the successful students as Mohammed Camara, from the Faculty of Education, who emerged first; Abdul-Hakeem Buhari, from the Social Sciences Department, who secured the second position; and Bilikis Giwa, also from the department, who emerged third.

The others are Rukayat Opoola, equally from the Social Science Department and Oluwaseun Jegede, from the Engineering Department, who emerged fourth and fifth, respectively.

It said that the organisation organised the competition through its Impact Leadership Academy, adding that it was committed to partnering with the university in producing quality graduates. It said the competition was aimed at developing leadership abilities in the youth.

It said that the NGO awarded scholarships to 45 students of the university, who participated in the competition which ended on June 15.

One Young World is a London-based charity organisation founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson.

It gathers young people worldwide and creates avenues for them to make lasting connections with which they can make positive changes.
