Akpabio blasts governor colleagues for challenging Jonathan

The Akwa Ibom Governor pledged loyalty to President Jonathan.

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governors Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, has lambasted his governor colleagues for being disloyal to President Goodluck Jonathan, even as he assured the president that the PDP Governors Forum, which he chairs, remain completely loyal to the president.

Mr. Akpabio, who made the statement on Thursday while delivering his goodwill message at the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of the ruling PDP at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, accused some of the governors of disrespecting the president.

“We are ready to stand solidly behind the leader of the PDP in the nation,” he said, adding that “Mr. President we have never failed in supporting any president in power. We always respect and support any president in power.”

Apparently taking a swipe at his colleagues who have challenged Mr. Jonathan’s alleged plans to run for a second term in office, Mr. Akpabio stated further that “When our late President Yar’Adua was in power, there was no single PDP governor that challenged him, either on the pages of newspaper or at any meeting. We even went to the extent of organizing prayer for him and we supported all his policies, yours cannot be different.”

Leadership comes from God

The Akwa Ibom governor also reminded his colleagues that “Leadership comes from God and he gives it to whom he pleases. My assurance to you is that the 23 PDP governors are solidly behind you”.

The Governor also congratulated the President on the mid-term report he presented recently.

“We thank you for your mid-term report. We have keyed into your transformation agenda and we are saying no shaking,” he said.

Mr. Akpabio also told the gathering that the party is fast losing its numerical advantage in the scheme of things, hence the need to form the party’s governor’s forum.

.”It is interesting to note that when we started in 1999, there was no need for the PDP governors forum, because as at time the PDP governors were over 33 and controlled the then Nigeria governors forum, but over time because of various disagreement, intrigues and scheming which are part and parcel of politics, the rank and file of PDP governors kept depleting,” he said.

The governor’s claim is, however, incorrect as the PDP had a lot less than 30 governors in 1999 with the then Alliance for Democracy, AD, controlling the six southwestern states and the then All Peoples Party also leading many states.

“When I became a governor in 2007, we were about 29 in number and through various court decisions; all of a sudden we were reduced to a level where we are now, only 23,” Mr. Akpabio said.

He also said the “PDP governors’ forum is therefore is a new baby, a new organ and we are now reporting ourselves to NEC that we are now born and we are ready to serve.

“We have been serving, on behalf of my colleagues I want to say we have come to NEC not just as governors individually but we are now coming under the PDP governors’ forum”.

Akpabio this is purely eye service period, yaradua got the cooperation of Governors becaus even on a sick bed he was doing reasonably well than GEJ and was not applying divisive policies and Yaradua was a true and patriotic nigerian he never pretended to be a president of all nigerians while in private he is only president of a part of nigeria, Akpabio did you now see the difference, but its not late to change.

      Good one man

      • dele

we run a federalism with a constitution that’s spell out the roles and boundaries of a president. A governor has jurisdiction over his state and a president has jurisdiction in certain affairs of the country. A president has not jurisdiction to label a governor disloyal on how he governs his state. we are not in a military dictatorship. Clearly, some of our leaders were never taught civics in primary school. I though this man was supposed to be a lawyer with a wealth of knowledge of constitutional democracy. His comments border on servitude. I wonder how else he wants to show Jonathan he is a loyal boy boy! by licking ass? well he has always been ass licker anyway

        • TRUTH MASTER

The bane of leadership is sycophancy. President Jonathan will do well to distance himself from the likes of Akpabio. This egomaniac called Akpabio is obviously feathering his own next by pretending to love President Jonathan more than anyone else. In the fullness of time, the world will understand what I mean.

          • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

politics is a game of interest. let people follow their own bias. same way, the some northern govs are seeking to sabotage the president just bcos of where he came from.

        • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

there is no where in this report, that the president label any governor, ‘disloyal’. don’t make up your own facts, it is dishonest. you are even worse than the people you are criticising

          • dele

@Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa, read very well before you comment. read the opening statement of the news report and you will realise that you are the one that doesn’t read very well before you comment : The Akwa Ibom Governor pledged loyalty to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Besides Mpitikwelu, I have read the report myself from first to last and I’m yet to see where Jonathan accussed any governor of being idsloyal to him?!
I have rather seen where a governor said that some of them are disloyal to the president!
            Please read it again yourself?!

    • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

you are a liar. Yaradua was called ‘baba go slow’ because nothing was moving during his tenure. It took Yaradua nearly eight months just to form a cabinent. Apart from his understandable sickness, Yaradua was a lazy man.
And by the way, No Nigerian president has been more magnanimous towards the north than the current president.

U must be sick with dis kind of comment about Yar’Adua who united did country even on a sick bed n brought down price of petrol by 10 naira may Amadioha strick u death 4 dis insult

        • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

amadioha is as dead as your moon god, so am not bothered.yaradua brought down petrol after labour strike and so did jonathan. I don’t know where you were during the yaradua’s regime but most people including el rufai described him as incompetent and provincial. these are El rufai’s words. I wont exchange insult with aboki.

  • Talk True

Must the Akwa Ibom Governor always display his emptiness every time in public?what crop of leadership does the PDP show case with the likes of Akpabio?in 1999 PDP had only 21 Governors, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigerian_state_governors_1999–2003_term

  • Dominic’s

How can u blame Akpabio’s position? He is a cheap off an old block, his grand parent were the house boys in Victoria Island and Ikoyi of those days, I am an indigent of Akwa Ibom and am speaking from a position of strength, Akpabio n Jonathon have forgotten where they came from to become governors n whatever they are today

    • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

You are right. The ‘houseboys’ should go back where they came from and leave the house for the ‘masters’. Jonathan and Akpabio have forgotten their place. Aso rock belongs to the born to rule.

    • Es3

      Dominic’s the Akwa Ibom “indigent”,
So what if Akpabio’s and Jonathan’s grandparent were ‘houseboys” in Victoria Island and Ikoyi and God that promotes and demotes at will and His sovereignty decided to promote them ahead of you that your grandparents were “landlords” or “owners” of V.I. and Ikoyi???
That stereotyping has given you completely out for who you really are!!!

  • Sadiq Garba

Yes Akpabio, Leadership comes from God but you lied in saying that the 23 governors of PDP are behind Jonathan.
Don’t mislead yourself into believing that you are leading all the PDP governors. Two weeks ago we read that governor Wammako repeated himself that he would never recognise Akpabio led PDP-GF.
Stop impersonating your colleagues before they take you to cleaners
