The centre will enhance emergency services in the FCT.
The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Bala Mohammed, on Sunday said that the FCT Administration has established a Fire Service Training Centre in Gwarimpa II District of Abuja.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Muhammed Sule, Mr. Mohammed revealed that the new training centre was established to enhance emergency services in the FCT in line with international best practices. He added that the initiative had become necessary considering the rapid expansion of Abuja, with a recent unexpected increase in demographic figures caused by migration from parts of the country that are currently experiencing security challenges.
He stated that in 2012, a total of 69 lives were lost in separate fire incidences around the city with property loss amounting to N7.65 million. He added that 239 lives were saved from fire and property worth N3.17 million following 486 fire calls as well as 103 rescue calls.
Mr. Muhammed also revealed that in addition to the emergency centre, the Abuja administration has established Disaster Vanguards and Community Support Centers in two secondary schools and two communities in each of the six area councils of Abuja to ensure that emergency campaign is carried out in all parts of the Nigerian capital.
He added that there has been massive procurement of emergency rescue equipment which include: emergency light tower, hydraulic rescue devices, disaster scene barriers, search cam & hydraulic spreader, seismic life detector, light weight power unit, disaster scene camera, lifting bags, confined space rescue equipment and body bags.
