Nigeria is seeking re-election into the Security Council.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Saturday commended the African Union (AU) for endorsing Nigeria for the UN Security Council seat for a second term.

Nigeria served in the Security Council from 2010 to 2011 and is seeking re-election for another term, 2014 to 2015.

The AU Executive Council on Thursday endorsed Nigeria for the seat during its 23rd Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa.

The NBA Chairman, Lagos branch, Taiwo Taiwo, who made the commendation in Lagos, said that the approval showed that a lot was still desired of the nation.

He said for Nigeria to be re-endorsed by the union, after it had served in the council previously, was a pointer that a good legacy was

“The endorsement of Nigeria for the seat will have much impact on the nation’s democracy. I think it is time for the nation to prove to the world that it is truly the giant of Africa,” he said.

“The decision of the AU is very commendable and I am optimistic that the country will uphold the tenet of good work, which it is known for.”

Also speaking, Onyekachi Ubani, the NBA Chairman, Ikeja Branch, described the endorsement as a “healthy development”. Mr. Ubani said it was undisputable that Nigeria had played frontier roles in crucial matters affecting sister African nations.

He said the endorsement of the country “bears eloquent testimonies to some of the virtues it possesses”.

“The endorsement of Nigeria by the AU is a healthy development for our great nation. We have been there before and had served meritoriously, and so, I have no fear that we would emerge with better agenda for the council,” Mr. Ubani said.

He urged Nigerians to assist the government to execute its leadership roles.
