Reptiles, weeds take over Gbenga Daniel’s controversial hotel

Daniel is accused of using government funds to build the hotel.

The controversial multi-billion naira hotel of former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, which had been seized by the state government, has now be taken over by weeds and reptiles.

PREMIUM TIMES findings reveal that the unnamed hotel located along Presidential Boulevard, Abeokuta, was seized and the certificate of occupancy of its land revoked by the administration of Mr. Daniel’s successor, Ibikunle Amosun.

The Amosun government alleged that Mr. Daniel encroached on the land and had used government funds to build the hotel. A panel on land matters set up by the Amosun government indicted the former governor in its report and subsequently recommended that the state government take over the structure.

Following this recommendation, contractors handling the project, which was near-ninety percent complete, were sent packing from the site.

The hotel is also one of the exhibits the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is using against the former governor in his ongoing corruption trial.

The EFCC said Mr. Daniel misappropriated millions of state funds while he was governor between 2003 and 2011 and has charged him before an Ogun State High Court.

The hotel, sited in a highbrow area of the town, is now a shadow of itself, as it has been left empty and devoid of human activities.
